About the job

Requirements
  • You have 5+ years of experience in software engineering, machine learning engineering, or data science.
  • You write and review production code in Python, JavaScript, or TypeScript; other languages are welcome.
  • You have owned a customer or operator outcome and can turn a fuzzy problem into a scoped, shipped system.
  • You have built and owned AI-native workflows or agents in production and debugged real production failures involving models, tools, data, pipelines, or delivery paths.
  • You have handled production reliability, including metrics, alerts, safe rollouts, and incident response.
  • You build end to end across frontend, backend, infrastructure, and prompt iteration.
  • You can work effectively in ambiguity without needing a complete specification before starting to build.
  • You can communicate with working engineers and vice presidents.
Responsibilities
  • Lead customer discovery by orienting in codebases and workflows, identifying bottlenecks and worthwhile use cases, and defining clear success metrics.
  • Design and ship production agents, AI applications, and coding-agent workflows on Grok and other models, for live business processes and customer engineering organizations.
  • Launch an initial version in days, then improve it over weeks through rollout, monitoring, and iteration based on real usage.
  • Own production quality through tracing, evaluations, debugging model or delivery failures, and managing latency and cost tradeoffs.
  • Build systems around models, including tools, MCP servers, retrieval, rules, skills, CI gates, and evaluations; integrate them into customer authentication, data, workflow, and delivery systems; and determine whether prompting, architecture, data, process, or a model change is the right lever.
  • Measure business outcomes such as revenue, cost, hours saved, error rate, cycle time, and escaped defects rather than seat adoption.
  • Work directly with Staff+ engineers, platform leaders, and domain leaders, understanding their systems and communicating tradeoffs and results.
  • Enable customer teams to operate what was built and turn lessons into reusable patterns and improvements to SpaceXAI products.
  • Own customer work end to end, from discovery through launch, iteration, and post-launch support, and ensure systems work in real-world production.
Desired Qualifications
  • At least 2 years in a customer-facing role, leading discovery conversations and being accountable for outcomes for external stakeholders.
  • Hands-on depth in several of the following: agents and tool-calling, evaluation harnesses, retrieval and context systems, CI/CD or developer platforms, and AI-native coding workflows in a real repository.
  • Experience as a forward-deployed, solutions, or platform engineer embedded with customers, or as a founding engineer who owned an AI product end to end.

About the company

Anysphere develops software tools that integrate artificial intelligence into the programming process to increase developer productivity. Its primary product is Cursor, an AI-first code editor that allows users to generate large code changes with minimal effort and receive instant answers to technical questions about their codebase. Unlike traditional editors that treat AI as a secondary plugin, Anysphere builds its system from the ground up to create a hybrid human-AI workflow supported by a team of elite researchers and open-source contributors. The company's goal is to create a coding environment where writing bugs is nearly impossible and software iteration is effortless.

What believers are saying

  • Anthropic said it will increase Claude compute in Cursor after August 29, 2026.
  • Cursor released Grok 4.7 on September 21, 2026, extending its model roadmap.
  • September 2026 product launches target Teams and Enterprise, widening monetization beyond core editor seats.

What critics are saying

  • OpenAI ends Cursor model access on November 12, 2026 after the August 14 SpaceX deal.
  • Cursor now depends on SpaceXAI, making rival model access and pricing structurally fragile.
  • Enterprise buyers distrust a Musk-controlled editor after OpenAI cited contract-violation concerns in August 2026.

What makes Anysphere unique

  • Cursor shipped Projects and self-hosted machines on September 10, 2026.
  • Cursor launched Rollouts and Security Review for enterprise deployment on September 23, 2026.
  • Cursor owns the full coding workflow, from editor to agentic review to production monitoring.

Cursor raises $2.3B at $29.3B valuation, but its $20 Pro plan runs dry fast

Cursor, the coding assistant maker owned by Anysphere, closed a $2.3 billion Series D round at a $29.3 billion valuation. Accel and Coatue Management co-led the round, with Nvidia participating. The company says annualised revenue has passed $1 billion. Yet its $20 monthly Pro plan frustrates users. Cursor swapped request-based limits for usage-based pricing, so $20 now buys compute at API rates, roughly 225 Sonnet 4 requests. Some users ran out after a few prompts and faced unexpected extra charges. Cursor's chief executive apologised for poor communication and offered refunds for surprise usage between June 16 and July 4, 2025. Complaints about unclear limits and credit use by Agent Mode persist.

OpenAI cuts off $1B customer Cursor after SpaceX acquisition to avoid Elon Musk

OpenAI has ended its partnership with Cursor, the AI coding tool recently acquired by SpaceX for $60 billion, citing concerns it cannot trust Elon Musk's company to adhere to its terms of service. The decision represents a significant financial loss, as Cursor was among OpenAI's top five customers by revenue at the start of 2026. OpenAI estimated Cursor would generate more than $1 billion in annualised revenue based on the partnership's spring performance, according to people familiar with the matter. The company stated it made the choice because it cannot be confident SpaceX will use its technology within service terms, based on experience with Musk's companies violating contracts. Cursor founder Michael Truell, now at SpaceX, responded that OpenAI's models serve only about 5% of Cursor user traffic. OpenAI's Thibault Sottiaux countered that token usage is not a proxy for revenue or value created.

OpenAI cuts off Cursor after $60B SpaceX acquisition, Anthropic steps in with Claude

OpenAI terminated its model supply agreement with Cursor on 28 August 2026, two weeks after SpaceX acquired Anysphere for $60 billion. The cut-off took effect on 12 November 2026. OpenAI cited trust concerns regarding Elon Musk's companies, referencing contract violations and allegations that xAI distilled OpenAI models. Musk dismissed the move, calling Sam Altman and Greg Brockman "untrustworthy". Anthropic is filling the gap, increasing compute capacity for Claude models on Cursor. Menlo Ventures data shows Anthropic holds 40% enterprise spend share versus OpenAI's 27%. Anthropic's Q2 2026 revenue reached $11.5 billion, surpassing OpenAI's $6.7 billion, with $8 billion from Claude Code. Anthropic targets an October 2026 IPO at a $965 billion valuation.

Cursor tackles Git scalability with S3-backed architecture

Cursor, the SpaceX subsidiary, has developed a new approach to managing Git at scale using object storage. The company built a Git-based repository service called Origin, powered by an internal engine named Continuity. Traditional Git architecture struggles with synchronisation at scale. GitHub's approach uses multiple tightly synchronised copies on NVMe disks, but synchronisation time increases with more replicas. AI agents have exacerbated these challenges by creating vast numbers of small, often throwaway repositories. Cursor's solution stores pushes in Amazon S3 as immutable objects in a write-ahead log, whilst simultaneously writing to a local NVMe repository. S3 serves as the source of truth, whilst local repositories act as warm caches for latency-sensitive operations. A beta of Origin is available with paid Cursor plans.
