Requirements
  • For the Physician Assistant pathway, completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and a minimum Bachelor's degree are required.
  • For the Nurse Practitioner pathway, a current registered nurse license and current American Association of Nurse Practitioners or American Nurses Credentialing Center certification are required.
  • Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, and Automated External Defibrillator training is required and must be from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross; online programs are not accepted.
  • Drug Enforcement Administration registration is required for practitioners who handle discharge responsibilities.
Responsibilities
  • Provide assessments, diagnoses, care, and treatment for patients in an inpatient cardiology setting in collaboration with physicians, and document findings in consultation or progress notes.
  • Review and implement admission, pre-procedure, and post-procedure orders; participate in daily rounds; perform follow-up tasks; and liaise among cardiothoracic surgeons, nursing staff, unit-based advanced practice providers, and attending physicians.
  • Assist cardiologists with noninvasive and invasive procedures and independently perform procedures when adequately skilled.
  • Manage care for patients with implanted pacemakers, defibrillators, and loop recorders.
  • Order appropriate diagnostic tests and medications.
  • Receive, interpret, and communicate internal and external testing results.
  • Coordinate pre-operative, post-operative, discharge, and follow-up care through written and verbal communication.
  • Round on pre- and post-cardiothoracic procedural patients, examine them, and document findings in daily progress notes in collaboration with cardiothoracic surgeons.
  • Coordinate admissions and transfers to other facilities.
  • Consult and coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to formulate appropriate patient care plans.
  • Serve as a liaison and resource to the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, staff, and physicians.
  • Support compliance with American College of Cardiology and New York State Department of Health reporting requirements and assist with reporting forms.
  • Provide direct clinical services for medically ill adult patients according to established hospital protocols and evidence-based clinical practice standards under attending supervision.
  • Provide safe, effective, and compassionate patient care.
  • Address patients' medical problems when the attending of record is unavailable.
  • Examine patients, assess physical conditions, identify signs and symptoms, gather personal details, and develop care plans with the attending of record.
  • Participate in medication reconciliation during admission, discharge, and transfers of care.
  • Collaborate with cardiothoracic surgeons on patient care plans and documentation.
  • Maintain accurate medical records, orders, notes, and verbal and telephone orders promptly.
  • Explain the necessity, preparation, nature, and anticipated effects of procedures to patients, families, staff, and healthcare students.
  • Assess family coping skills and determine the need for crisis or other interventions.
  • Practice infection control and sterile technique.
  • Maintain and improve proficiency in bedside invasive and noninvasive procedures and maintain patient procedure logs.
