Requirements
  • Meet the educational requirements for American Society of Clinical Pathology certification.
  • Hold American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Registry Cytotechnologist Certification or be eligible for certification.
  • Work accurately under precise quantity and quality requirements while handling biohazardous materials, potentially dangerous equipment, blood-borne pathogens, fumes, airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • Comply with workplace safety, environmental, and infection control practices.
Responsibilities
  • Diagnose gynecological and non-gynecological specimens for cellular abnormalities using a microscope.
  • Correlate laboratory history or clinical information with microscopic findings.
  • Prepare, stain, and examine specimens to detect minute abnormalities in cell shape, color, or size.
  • Evaluate specimens to detect abnormal hormone conditions and other pathological disease processes.
  • Diagnose negative slides and refer atypical, inconclusive, or positive cases for further evaluation.
  • Confer with supervisors and other relevant personnel on cases on an ongoing basis.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation of samples and analyses to prevent patient mix-ups.
  • Perform and record preventive maintenance and function verification of microscopes and other equipment.
  • Perform other assigned duties.
