- Must be licensed to practice nursing in the State of California upon the start date.
- Assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and revise each patient’s care plan in accordance with physician orders, patient needs, and facility policies and procedures during the intraoperative phase, while communicating information between personnel inside and outside the operating room.
- Complete all documentation on the patient’s chart for the scheduled procedure.
- Complete the safety checklist before entering the operating room, during the procedure, and after the procedure, including signature, date, and time.
- Set up supplies and medications, ensure equipment is clean, safe, and functional, and complete the checklist for the Facility Manager.
- Report low stock levels to the Clinical Nursing Supervisor or Facility Manager.
- Complete applicable forms, including laboratory, tissue, FDA, billing, and visitor waiver-of-liability forms, and maintain applicable tissue, lens, and temperature/humidity logs.
- Maintain sterile technique where appropriate during surgery and assist the scrub technician and surgeon.
- Ensure patient comfort and safety, including proper positioning and padding.
- Perform preoperative preparation and patient recovery as needed based on the staffing pattern for the surgical day.
- Receive the report from the preoperative registered nurse when the patient enters the operating room; assist the anesthesiologist with patient transfers to and from the operating room; bring the chart and required discharge supplies to the post-anesthesia care unit; and give a report to the post-anesthesia care unit registered nurse when transferring the patient from the operating room.
- Clean the operating room after surgery with the certified surgical technologist, set up the room for the next case, and assist with transferring the next patient to the operating room.
- Dispose of needles, sharps, syringes, and other waste properly; assist with operating-room cleanup between cases; and assist with preparing the surgery suite for the following day’s cases.
