Requirements
  • High school graduation or GED is required; relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
  • Two years of experience in an applicable maintenance or construction trade is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow written and verbal instructions is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to safety rules and regulations is required.
  • The employee must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without sponsorship.
  • A criminal history background check is required for finalists.
  • The employee must be able to work 40 hours per week and may be required to work overtime, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • The employee must be able to operate an electronic device such as an iPhone, iPad, or laptop or desktop computer for time reporting and work management.
  • The employee may be required to work in confined spaces, manholes, tunnels, elevated work, and extended shifts.
  • The employee may be required to lift up to 50 pounds and perform substantial walking, standing, squatting, stooping, and movement of heavy materials and equipment.
  • The employee may be required to operate job-related equipment and may drive University vehicles while maintaining an acceptable driver rating if required.
  • The employee may require tuberculosis screening and occasional use of a respirator.
Responsibilities
  • Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs of mechanical systems, including pumps, fans, compressors, and specialty equipment.
  • Acquire field data from equipment and tags, and apply equipment labels.
  • Acquire parts and maintain appropriate stock of materials and supplies.
  • Assist electricians, plumbers, refrigeration mechanics, carpenters, and others as needed to meet shop goals and objectives.
  • Perform basic electrical tasks, such as replacing lamps and ballasts.
  • Use precision instruments to determine flow rates, pressure drop, and other measurements to ensure proper alignment, installation, and operation of belts, chains, couplings, bearings, and other drive components.
  • Read blueprints, work from specifications, and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Complete daily written explanations on work orders to document work performed and describe equipment problems.
Desired Qualifications
  • An Associate Degree is preferred.
  • Graduation from a technical or vocational trade school is preferred.
  • More than three years of experience in an applicable maintenance or construction trade is preferred.
  • Experience using diagnostic equipment such as multimeters, power quality meters, and accelerometers is preferred.
  • Experience at the University of Texas or in a university setting is preferred.
  • Experience in more than one craft or trade is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of computerized systems is preferred.
  • Ability to read and understand technical manuals and blueprints related to the trade is preferred.
  • Ability to write reports summarizing work activities is preferred.
  • A stable work history is preferred.
  • Successful completion of the Leader Development Program is preferred.
