Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent GED is required.
  • Prior completion of 40 hours of law enforcement training emphasizing marine law is required, or the candidate must complete the county-provided 40-hour training at hire.
  • The candidate must participate in department training one evening per week starting in February 2027.
  • The candidate must obtain firearms qualification, CPR, first aid, bloodborne pathogens, LEIN certification, and boater safety certification within four months of hire.
  • The candidate must possess a valid Michigan driver's license.
  • The candidate must pass a drug screen, including THC testing, to be hired.
Responsibilities
  • Complete maintenance on department-owned patrol boats.
  • Perform proactive patrols of lakes and rivers, including vessel safety-equipment checks, boat-registration and boater-safety-certification verification, and enforcement of state marine laws and local watercraft-control ordinances.
  • Prepare reports and required marine documents.
  • Interview cooperative and uncooperative subjects to obtain information needed for investigations.
  • Safely operate assigned motor vehicles and marine patrol vessels.
  • Conduct annual boater safety certification classes.
  • Inspect and document complete annual inspections of operating boat liveries to ensure compliance with state and local laws.
  • Conduct search-and-rescue operations.
