Resolution Life consolidates life insurance and annuity blocks by buying in-force portfolios from other insurers and running them on its own platform. It acquires mature policies to release capital for the selling company, then manages policy administration, claims, and risk for the policyholders across multiple regions (US, Bermuda, UK, Australia, New Zealand). The company’s product is the continued administration and payout of existing policies, not new insurance sales. Unlike many peers, Resolution Life operates at scale with regional platforms and is backed by a large group of financial institutions and funds, allowing it to acquire sizeable run-off blocks and manage them efficiently. Its goal is to optimize capital and risk for primary insurers by taking over and running legacy portfolios, while growing assets under management and serving millions of policyholders.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Portfolio acquisitions release capital for insurers seeking balance-sheet simplification.
  • Digital portal modernization improved customer and back-office workflows in months.
  • Nippon Life ownership strengthens strategic support and acquisition capacity.

What critics are saying

  • Parent control by Nippon Life can constrain capital allocation and deal speed.
  • Legacy portfolios expose earnings to longevity, lapse, and spread assumption volatility.
  • Large policy-administration outages would directly damage claims payment and servicing credibility.

What makes Resolution Life unique

  • Global consolidator of in-force life and annuity portfolios across major markets.
  • Specializes in reinsurance and legal-entity acquisitions, not new-policy origination.
  • Backed by long-duration capital and institutional investors for large block transactions.
