About the job

Requirements
  • A Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and membership in good standing of at least one bar; California or New York bar membership is preferred.
  • Five to seven years of product, technology, and intellectual property law experience at a top-tier law firm, or four to five years of in-house product and intellectual property counsel experience at a technology company.
  • Broad product law experience spanning intellectual property strategy and portfolio management, software and software-as-a-service licensing, open source compliance, and product-facing commercial agreements.
  • Demonstrated ability to work directly with product and engineering teams as a trusted legal partner, including in agile product environments, and translate legal requirements into actionable, developer-friendly guidance.
  • Broad regulatory experience across multiple industries and the ability to quickly learn sector-specific legal frameworks and advise product teams on compliance obligations.
  • Strong background in patent strategy and prosecution management, trademark portfolio oversight, and intellectual property ownership and licensing structures.
  • Proficiency with artificial intelligence tools for legal work and interest in building efficient, scalable legal workflows for a high-growth, multi-product environment.
  • Written and verbal communication skills sufficient to explain complex technical and legal concepts in clear, business-friendly language.
Responsibilities
  • Serve as the embedded legal partner to Beacon’s product and engineering teams and advise product and engineering teams across portfolio companies.
  • Advise on product features, roadmap decisions, and go-to-market launches from ideation through release; identify legal risks early and provide practical guidance.
  • Build relationships with product managers, engineers, and designers so legal input is integrated into product development, and develop scalable legal support models for portfolio company product teams.
  • Own and manage Beacon’s intellectual property portfolio across the platform and portfolio companies; develop and execute an intellectual property strategy covering patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets.
  • Oversee patent prosecution and filing programs, manage trademark registrations globally, and advise on intellectual property ownership, assignment, and licensing matters.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate product-facing commercial agreements, including software-as-a-service and software licensing agreements, application programming interface terms and developer agreements, marketplace and platform agreements, technology partnership arrangements, and product integration agreements.
  • Develop and maintain standard-form product agreements, terms of service, and acceptable use policies for Beacon and its portfolio companies.
  • Build and manage Beacon’s open source compliance program; review open source use, assess license compatibility and obligations, and establish policies and processes for responsible use across the portfolio.
  • Lead product and intellectual property due diligence on acquisition targets, assessing ownership, freedom to operate, patent exposure, open source risks, software licensing obligations, and technology dependency risks.
  • Develop standardized intellectual property due diligence checklists and frameworks and advise after acquisitions on intellectual property integration, assignment, and consolidation across the portfolio.
  • Advise on the legal and intellectual property dimensions of artificial intelligence and machine learning in products, including generated-content ownership, training data rights, model licensing, and emerging regulatory frameworks.
  • Help product teams build artificial-intelligence-powered features with appropriate legal guardrails.
  • Advise on product-related legal requirements across portfolio industries, including sector-specific compliance obligations, platform liability, accessibility, and consumer protection as they apply to product features and releases.
  • Partner with privacy counsel on product-layer data collection, consent, and data minimization requirements.
  • Advise on brand protection strategy, trademark enforcement, and content-related legal matters, including copyright clearance, user-generated content policies, and compliance with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
  • Manage third-party intellectual property claims and develop enforcement and response procedures for intellectual property disputes.
  • Build reusable product legal templates, standard-form agreements, and internal playbooks to increase speed and consistency as the company scales.
  • Use artificial intelligence tools to streamline contract review, legal research, and document drafting.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience advising on artificial-intelligence or machine-learning products and familiarity with training data rights and artificial intelligence regulation.
  • Experience with commercial contracting, including drafting and negotiating master services agreements, vendor agreements, and customer-facing terms; the role’s scope may expand to include broader commercial contracting.
  • Experience with vertical market software, software-as-a-service, or multi-product technology platforms.

About the company

Beacon Software is a long-term home for vertical software companies in the real economy. It buys, builds, and grows software businesses, preserving their legacy while expanding founders’ ambitions. Unlike private equity that aims to flip, Beacon holds forever, investing in product, customers, and teams and sharing resources for scale. Founders gain in-house engineering, AI, design, and fintech expertise, plus access to a network spanning Silicon Valley, Wall Street, and Main Street. Beacon simplifies back-office operations, accelerates growth with proven playbooks, and lets founders focus on building software for their markets. Each portfolio company stays independent with its own brand and customers but benefits from shared resources and immediate value creation. The goal is to help founder-by-founder, company-by-company, win larger contracts, modernize technology, and expand market share by providing a sustainable, collaborative home for software growth.
