About the company

A

American Battery Technology

View

American Battery Technology focuses on securing battery material supplies through three main activities: recycling used lithium-ion batteries, extracting metals from battery materials, and developing primary mineral resources. Its products and services enable the batteries that power electric vehicles, grid storage, and consumer electronics while promoting environmental and ethical sourcing. The company recovers valuable metals from spent batteries, processes them for reuse, and pursues new mineral resources to feed the battery supply chain. Unlike firms that rely solely on mining or recycling, ABAT combines advanced recycling, metal extraction technologies, and new mine development to create a more integrated, responsible supply of battery materials. The overarching goal is to provide a stable, ethical, and environmentally sound source of critical battery materials to support electric mobility and energy storage at scale.

What believers are saying

  • October 1, 2026 approval unlocks up to $100 million in black-mass sales.
  • FY2026 revenue exceeded $21.7 million, and ABAT posted its first adjusted gross profit.
  • DOE reinstated the $57 million Tonopah grant, preserving lithium-refinery momentum.

What critics are saying

  • BIS approval is conditional; losing it cuts foreign black-mass sales immediately.
  • Tonopah Flats still needs full NEPA completion and final capital before production.
  • ABAT still carries going-concern and financing risk if grants or exports stall.

What makes American Battery Technology unique

  • ABAT combines Nevada recycling, Tonopah lithium mining, and domestic battery-material refining.
  • Ryan Melsert built first commercial black-mass plant and secured DOE-backed scale-up.
  • October 1, 2026 BIS approval legitimizes ABAT’s recycled black mass export channel.

American Battery Technology shares jump 10% on $100M export approval for recycled battery materials

American Battery Technology shares jumped 10% in premarket trading after receiving US government approval to export up to $100 million of recycled black mass material. The approval from the Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security came following new federal export controls on critical battery materials. Black mass contains lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese and graphite that can be reprocessed for new products. The company operates a commercial-scale recycling facility near Reno, Nevada, which processes end-of-life batteries and manufacturing scrap. The export licence follows American Battery Technology reporting year-on-year revenue growth exceeding 400% for fiscal 2026. The company is expanding operations with a second recycling facility supported by $150 million in competitive grants from the US Department of Energy.

ABAT hits first profit with $21.7M revenue, but US export ban threatens black mass sales

American Battery Technology Company reported its first-ever adjusted gross profit of $1.7 million in fiscal year 2026, marking a sharp turnaround from a $6.2 million loss the previous year. Revenue jumped over 400% to $21.7 million, driven by higher throughput at its recycling facility. However, the US Department of Commerce has effectively banned black mass exports unless companies obtain specific exceptions. American Battery Technology has applied for an exception but is storing black mass whilst awaiting a response. The company eliminated all long-term debt and increased cash to $49.5 million as of 30 June 2026. It received a $150 million Department of Energy grant for a second recycling facility and a $10 million grant for next-generation recycling technologies.

American Battery hits positive gross margin as Q3 revenue climbs 64% to $7.8M

American Battery Technology Company (NASDAQ:ABAT) reported record fiscal Q3 revenue of $7.8 million on 11 May 2026, marking a 64% increase quarter over quarter. The company achieved its first positive gross margin whilst cost of goods sold rose only 11% over the same period. The revenue growth came from ramped operations at its Nevada critical mineral recycling facility. CEO Ryan Melsert said the positive gross margin milestone supports self-sustaining operations and will fund expansion of the recycling facility, development of a second facility, and construction of a lithium mine and refinery. On 28 April 2026, Maxim initiated coverage of American Battery with a Buy rating and $6 price target. The company develops battery materials technologies and explores for battery metals in the United States.

ABAT hits $5.1M Q2 revenue, up 1,300% YoY, as recycling drives growth

American Battery Technology Company reported $4.8 million in revenue for Q2 2026, marking a year-over-year increase of over 1,300%. Combined with interest income, the total reached $5.1 million, exceeding cash cost of goods sold of $4.9 million for the first time. Revenue growth was driven by increased processing volumes at the company's Nevada recycling facility, which became operational in early 2025. The firm is developing a second recycling facility in the Southeast US with five times the capacity of its current site. The company's Tonopah Flats Lithium Project received Fast-41 designation to accelerate federal permitting. A pre-feasibility study published in October 2025 outlines a 45-year mine life with projected annual production of 30,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide monohydrate.
