F&G shifts to fee-based model as Q2 retail sales hit $1.8B amid declining FIA market

F&G Annuities & Life is shifting towards a fee-based, higher-margin business model whilst maintaining strong retail sales of $1.8 billion, outperforming a declining fixed indexed annuity market that fell 5%. The company is reducing focus on multi-year guaranteed annuities due to returns falling below profitability thresholds. Alternative investment returns of 5.9% lagged the 12% target, as 84% of the portfolio remains in early development stages. Operating expenses improved to 47 basis points of assets under management, targeting 45 basis points by year-end 2027. Management is exploring strategic alternatives for Peak Altitude, seeking a partner to acquire slightly over 50%. The company expects to maintain its risk-based capital ratio above 400% despite new regulatory headwinds. Pension risk transfer sales are targeted at $1.5 billion to $2 billion annually.

F&G Annuities & Life misses EPS expectations by 18.6% despite 30.7% revenue growth to $1.19B

F&G Annuities & Life reported first-quarter revenue of $1.19 billion, up 30.7% year-on-year, but adjusted earnings per share of $0.82 missed analyst expectations of $1.01 by 18.6%. The insurance company's market capitalisation stands at $3.71 billion. Management attributed the earnings shortfall to lower alternative investment income and one-time items, whilst highlighting strong asset growth and cost discipline. CEO Christopher Owsley Blunt emphasised the company's ability to adapt across products and channels to source attractive liabilities. Key analyst questions focused on earnings sustainability, asset allocation strategy amid tight credit spreads, and the strategic review of Peak Altitude. Management indicated that whilst core improvements are sustainable, alternative investment returns remain a key variable affecting future earnings.
