New Manulife and MIT AgeLab "Longevity Preparedness Index" Reveals what it takes to age well in Canada.

New Manulife and MIT AgeLab "Longevity Preparedness Index" Reveals what it takes to age well in Canada. Posted: October 27, 2026 * First-of-its-kind research finds Canadians score 60 out of 100 on longevity preparedness, with care, housing and health emerging as key gaps * Manulife brings its Longevity Symposium series to Canada for the first time, convening leaders across health, finance and aging to advance longevity preparedness TORONTO, ON and VANCOUVER, B.C. - Canadians are living longer[[i]], but many are not fully prepared for the realities that accompany longer lives, according to the inaugural Longevity Preparedness Index (LPI) for Canada from Manulife and the MIT AgeLab. The innovative new research[[ii]] found Canadians are only modestly prepared for longer lives, scoring just 60 out of 100 on the LPI. The findings show that aging well depends on more than finances alone, with health, housing, care, social connection and community all playing critical roles. "Canadians are entering a new era of longevity, and the findings reinforce what we've long believed at Manulife: living longer, healthier lives requires a holistic approach," said Patrick Graham, President and Chief Executive Officer, Manulife Canada. "Our health, sense of community, financial security, and plans for care all play a role in how well we age. At Manulife, we're committed to helping people navigate those important decisions to feel more prepared for whatever comes next." The results were shared today at Beyond Age, Manulife's Longevity Symposium, in Vancouver, the first Canadian event in Manulife's international longevity symposium series. Additional events will take place in Montreal and Toronto next month. Where Canadians Are Most and Least Prepared The Longevity Preparedness Index measures preparedness across eight dimensions, each evaluated on a scale of 0 to 100, along with an overall score that represents the average of the domain scores. * Community (75) - Access to services, healthcare, recreation and transportation * Social connection (69) - Relationships with family, friends and community * Finance (66) - Financial security and confidence * Daily activities (60) - Purposeful and meaningful engagement * Life transitions (60) - Ability to adapt to change * Health (55) - Physical, mental and cognitive wellbeing * Home (53) - Safe, accessible housing * Care (40) - Planning for long-term care needs and caregiving responsibilities Canadians scored highest in community and social connection, demonstrating the strength of the social and community infrastructure that supports wellbeing. However, care, home and health emerged as the areas requiring the greatest attention. "We have never had this many people living this long within the social context we have today. Longevity is still a relatively new phenomenon," said Dr. Joseph F. Coughlin, Founder and Director of MIT AgeLab. "Canadians are not unprepared because they are unwilling to plan. We are all learning how to navigate a future that previous generations never experienced. What makes the Longevity Preparedness Index so important is that it provides a roadmap. For the first time, Canadians can see the key dimensions that contribute to living 100 good years, from health and finances to caregiving, housing, social connection and purpose." Health and Finances Top Canadians' Priorities While the preparedness domains measure how ready Canadians are across key dimensions of longevity, Canadians were also asked to identify the aspects of life they consider most important today. The results reveal that what people prioritize and how prepared they are do not always align. Nearly two-thirds of Canadians identify health (67 per cent) and finances (66 per cent) among their most important priorities today. Notably, despite being Canadians' top priority, health received a preparedness score of just 55, highlighting a gap between recognizing the importance of health and taking steps to support long-term wellbeing. By contrast, finance received a preparedness score of 66. Care Is Canada's Biggest Preparedness Gap Among the domains measured, care received the lowest score at just 40 out of 100, making it the country's most significant preparedness gap. While only 11 per cent of Canadians identify future care needs and caregiving as a top priority today, more than twice as many (26 per cent) believe it will be important to their wellbeing later in life. The findings suggest Canadians recognize the importance of planning for care, but many are delaying conversations and planning until the need becomes more immediate. Home (53) and health (55) also ranked among the lowest-scoring preparedness domains, highlighting opportunities for people to better prepare for the housing, accessibility and wellbeing considerations that support independence as they age. Financial Advice Tied to Stronger Longevity Preparedness The research found people working with a financial professional scored 63 on the Longevity Preparedness Index, compared with 57 among those who have never worked with one. The advantage extended across all eight dimensions measured, including care, health, social connection, daily activities, and life transitions. "One of the most compelling findings is that Canadians who work with a financial professional report higher levels of preparedness across every aspect of life, not just finances," said Paul Lorentz, President and Chief Executive Officer, Manulife Wealth & Asset Management. "Canadians who work with a financial professional score higher across all eight domains of preparedness, and scores rise even further when advisors discuss longevity-related topics. Preparing for a longer life requires connecting the dots across financial, health and personal considerations, and advisors can play an important role in helping clients navigate that journey." Among people whose advisor discusses longevity-related topics, preparedness rose even further to 66, compared with 61 among those whose advisor does not have these conversations. Average preparedness scores were also higher among Canadians who were older, lived in urban areas, had higher levels of income and education, were retired, married or partnered, and had children. Manulife is Empowering Customer Health, Wealth & Longevity Globally The Longevity Preparedness Index was originally created by the MIT AgeLab and John Hancock in 2025. Updated U.S. findings released today show Americans also scored 60 out of 100 on the index, providing a broader view of longevity preparedness across North America. The LPI supports the work of the Manulife Longevity Institute, a global research, thought leadership, innovation, advocacy, and community investment platform that aims to advance action on helping people live longer, healthier, more financially secure lives. As a global life insurer, asset manager and retirement plan provider, Manulife is committed to helping Canadians navigate the opportunities and challenges that come with longer lives by supporting physical wellbeing and financial security. Manulife adds free travel eSIM to insurance benefits.

Manulife adds free travel eSIM to insurance benefits. Manulife Canada's partnership with Travelgoogoo brings year-long mobile connectivity to eligible travel insurance customers. But the more interesting story is how eSIM technology is becoming part of financial services, insurance and the wider travel experience. Travel insurance used to be something you bought, filed away and hoped you would never need. Mobile connectivity is different. You need it almost as soon as you land. Manulife Canada is bringing those two services together. Manulife Canada has partnered with Singapore-based Travelgoogoo to offer eligible travel insurance customers a complimentary one-year global eSIM membership covering more than 120 countries. The offer sits within Manulife Travel Advantage, the company's expanding collection of travel-related benefits. On the surface, this is a straightforward customer perk. Look closer, however, and it reflects a broader shift: travel connectivity is moving beyond dedicated eSIM stores and increasingly becoming a built-in benefit of products travellers already purchase. What Manulife customers actually get. The complimentary membership uses Travelgoogoo365, a reusable global eSIM designed to remain active across multiple international trips. According to Manulife, the package includes: * Unlimited app-based messaging through supported services, including WhatsApp, iMessage, Facebook Messenger and WeChat. * 1GB of global high-speed data for general internet use. * Always-On connectivity in more than 120 countries. * 20% off additional 4G/5G data packages purchased through Travelgoogoo. * Digital activation, without replacing a physical SIM card. * 24/7 customer support provided by Travelgoogoo. * 12 months of eSIM validity from activation, including reuse across multiple trips. Eligible policyholders receive activation instructions by email after purchasing their travel insurance. They need an eSIM-compatible device. Geoff Finnie, Head of Individual Health and Travel, Affinity, Manulife Canada, described the initiative as part of the insurer's changing role: "This launch marks another step in our evolution from a traditional insurer to a trusted travel companion." That ambition explains why connectivity fits the offering. Insurance helps when something goes wrong. Mobile data helps travellers manage everyday situations, from finding accommodation to contacting an assistance provider. Free connectivity has its limits. There is an important distinction between unlimited messaging and unlimited internet access. The included 1GB is a limited high-speed allowance, not an unlimited data plan. Video calls, navigation, social media and streaming can consume it quickly. Travelgoogoo's Always-On model is potentially more interesting. Its standalone Travelgoogoo365 membership advertises continued access to supported messaging services even without an additional data package. That could prove valuable when a traveller has exhausted their regular allowance but still needs to contact family or arrange transportation. However, travellers should confirm which messaging functions remain available, whether media sharing and calls have restrictions, and how performance varies by destination. Manulife has not provided detailed network-partner information or destination-specific performance guarantees in its announcement. For travellers working remotely, uploading large files or relying heavily on video calls, a dedicated higher-data eSIM, local operator plan or suitable roaming package may still be a better choice. Why insurers are becoming eSIM distributors. This partnership also reveals something about how travel eSIM companies are expanding. Selling data directly to travellers remains important, but partnerships with businesses that already serve international customers offer another distribution route. Banks, insurers, airlines, hotels and travel platforms all have opportunities to introduce connectivity at relevant moments. Consider Revolut. Its premium financial subscriptions combine travel-related insurance and other benefits with eSIM connectivity. In Croatia, Revolut Ultra currently includes 5GB of eSIM data per month. The commercial structure differs from Manulife's insurance-linked offer, but the underlying thinking is similar: connectivity makes an existing customer relationship more useful beyond its original purpose. For Travelgoogoo, the partnership provides access to customers who may not otherwise search for its brand. For Manulife, it adds a frequently usable service to a product traditionally associated with exceptional circumstances. Richard Bok, Travelgoogoo's CEO, captured the connection: "Travel insurance and connectivity are two essentials that give people greater confidence when they travel; one provides protection when the unexpected happens; the other keeps you connected to the people, information and support you need." There is also a commercial question worth watching. Complimentary memberships can introduce customers to paid data top-ups, potentially creating ongoing revenue without requiring a separate customer acquisition campaign. Neither company has disclosed the partnership's commercial terms. More on Alertify Follow the latest eSIM news Stay updated with the latest technological developments, carrier deployments, roaming trends, device compatibility, and industry updates regarding eSIM technology. Alertify's take: The next eSIM customer may never shop for an eSIM. Manulife is not competing directly with Airalo, Holafly or Nomad. Those providers primarily sell connectivity, while Manulife is using it to strengthen an existing insurance relationship. That distinction matters. The opportunity for eSIM providers is increasingly about distribution, not simply offering another destination package at a lower price. The challenge is proving that bundled connectivity delivers genuine value. A free gigabyte may encourage activation, but predictable coverage, transparent top-up pricing and dependable messaging will determine whether travellers continue using the service. Manulife and Travelgoogoo have identified a sensible combination. What remains to be demonstrated is how useful that connection becomes in real travel conditions. The bigger industry shift is clear: eSIM is gradually becoming a feature inside other services, rather than a product travellers always purchase separately. Companies that understand this could shape the next phase of travel connectivity.

TORONTO, ON - As travellers seek seamless, connected experiences wherever they go, Manulife Canada is introducing a new travel perk designed to help them stay online abroad. Through a new partnership with Travelgoogoo, a Singapore-based travel connectivity company, eligible Manulife travel insurance customers will receive a complimentary one-year eSIM membership, helping them access mobile services in more than 120 countries as a way to help avoid costly roaming charges. Manulife launches new Advisor AI Assistant, expanding AI-enabled underwriting support for advisors.

Manulife launches new Advisor AI Assistant, expanding AI-enabled underwriting support for advisors. Oct 14, 2026, 08:00 ET New AI-powered capability provides 24/7 underwriting guidance, supporting Manulife's vision for a more connected advisor experience TORONTO, Oct. 14, 2026 /CNW/ - Manulife today announced the launch of the Manulife Advisor AI Assistant(TM), a new AI-powered capability designed to help advisors access underwriting guidance 24/7. Advisors can ask questions in plain language and receive AI-generated guidance drawn from content in Manulife's underwriting advisor handbooks. The assistant helps advisors prepare for client conversations, understand potential underwriting requirements and gather information earlier in the insurance process. By helping advisors access guidance sooner, it can support clearer client conversations and better-informed expectations before an application is submitted. The first release supports life insurance, critical illness insurance, and Synergy(R) products. This launch is part of Manulife's broader effort to create a more connected advisor experience by making it easier for advisors to access the information, tools, and support they need. The assistant helps advisors access underwriting guidance earlier in the process, while MAUDE, Manulife's AI-enabled underwriting engine, supports decision-making after an application is submitted. Together, these capabilities are designed to support advisors as they move through the underwriting process and demonstrate how Manulife is applying AI to assist advisors throughout the underwriting journey. "The faster advisors can get to the information they need, the more confidently they can help clients move forward," said Karen Cutler, Chief Underwriter, Manulife Canada. "The Manulife Advisor AI Assistant puts underwriting guidance at their fingertips, making the process easier to navigate while laying the foundation for new ways we can support advisors in the future." Over time, Manulife plans to evolve the assistant beyond underwriting guidance with additional knowledge areas and capabilities that support advisors across more aspects of doing business with Manulife. The launch builds on Manulife's broader investment in AI-powered capabilities for advisors, including sales and advisor enablement tools announced earlier this year. This momentum reflects Manulife's continued investment in AI across underwriting, operations and digital experiences while maintaining strong governance and oversight. Earlier this year, Manulife was named the number one life insurer for AI maturity for a second consecutive year by Evident. The company also earned Celent Model Insurer recognition for AI leadership in underwriting. "AI is most powerful when it takes complexity out of the way and helps people do their best work," said Jamie Campbell, Head of Artificial Intelligence and Data, Canada, Manulife. "The Manulife Advisor AI Assistant does exactly that, making underwriting information easier to find so advisors can spend more time focused on their clients. It's another example of how we're applying AI in practical ways across the insurance journey." Manulife Advisor AI Assistant is designed to complement, not replace, the expertise of Manulife's underwriters and wholesalers. The tool helps advisors quickly access underwriting guidance and information, but does not make underwriting decisions or provide a binding indication of insurability, premium, coverage or application outcome. All insurance applications remain subject to Manulife's applicable underwriting requirements and evaluation. Advisors are expected to exercise professional judgment when using the assistant, as AI-generated responses may contain errors. The assistant was developed using Manulife's underwriting advisor handbooks and operates within Manulife's broader AI governance framework, which includes risk management, human oversight, privacy safeguards and ongoing monitoring. Becoming an AI-powered organization is one of Manulife's strategic priorities. Manulife expects to generate more than $1 billion[1] of enterprise value by 2027, with $300 million achieved as of year-end 2025, improving productivity and efficiency and delivering real impact for customers, colleagues and shareholders. The Manulife Advisor AI Assistant is now available through Advisor Portal.
