Upstart makes buy list while Adobe and Bandwidth fall short on growth metrics

Software companies have delivered strong returns, with the industry gaining 45.5% over six months, outperforming the S&P 500 by 24.4 percentage points. However, investors should be selective as AI threatens to commoditise many software products. Adobe faces challenges with average billings growth of just 11.9% over the past year and estimated sales growth of 9.4% for the next 12 months, suggesting slowing demand. Its operating margin failed to improve year-over-year. Bandwidth showed weak annual revenue growth of 11.9% over two years and a low gross margin of 37.2% compared to competitors. Its operating margin remained flat. Upstart, an AI-powered lending platform, appears more promising. The company uses over 2,500 data variables and machine learning to help banks assess borrower risk for various loan types.

Bandwidth promotes Emily Harlan to General Counsel and Secretary. Sep 04, 2026, 08:13 ET Experienced Bandwidth legal leader succeeds retiring General Counsel Brandon Asbill RALEIGH, N.C., Sept. 4, 2026 /PRNewswire/ - Bandwidth Inc. (NASDAQ: BAND), a leading global cloud communications company, today announced the promotion of Emily Harlan to General Counsel and Secretary, effective Sept. 1, 2026. Harlan has taken on increasing leadership responsibilities across the company's legal function since joining Bandwidth as Deputy General Counsel in 2018. She succeeds Brandon Asbill, who is retiring as General Counsel and Secretary after more than five years. "Emily is an exceptional lawyer, trusted advisor and proven leader who knows Bandwidth and our business deeply," said David Morken, Bandwidth's Co-founder and CEO. "Over the past eight years, she has earned the confidence of our leadership team and Board through her judgment, integrity and ability to navigate complex issues. I'm delighted to elevate Emily to this new role as we continue to grow and serve our customers around the world." "I'm honored and grateful for the opportunity to continue contributing to Bandwidth's success alongside such a talented team," said Harlan. "I've had the privilege of collaborating with Bandmates across the company for years, and I look forward to building on the strong foundation Brandon and our legal team have established." Harlan joined Bandwidth in Dec. 2018 as Deputy General Counsel, initially leading dispute resolution and litigation after previously serving as outside counsel to the company. Since then, she has taken on increasing responsibilities across the legal function. Her additional roles have included serving as the company's Ethics and Compliance Officer and leading employment law matters for Bandwidth's global workforce. She was promoted to Senior Vice President and Deputy General Counsel in July 2024. Before joining Bandwidth, Harlan was a partner in the Washington, D.C., office of Nixon Peabody LLP. She earned a bachelor's degree in Linguistics from Duke University and a J.D. from The George Washington University Law School. Asbill steps down as General Counsel and Corporate Secretary effective Aug. 31, 2026, and will serve as General Counsel Emeritus and Assistant Secretary through his retirement from Bandwidth on Dec. 31, 2026. During his tenure, Asbill played an important role in Bandwidth's evolution into a global company and built a legal function to support growth and an expanding international footprint. "Serving as Bandwidth's General Counsel has been one of the great honors of my career," said Asbill. "I'm incredibly proud of the legal team we've built and the role we've played in Bandwidth's growth into a global company. Emily is exactly the right leader to carry this work forward. She has my full confidence, and I know the function is in exceptional hands." "Brandon has been a steadfast counselor, colleague and friend through a key growth chapter in Bandwidth's history," said Morken. Bandwidth earns ISO/IEC 42001 certification for enterprise AI management.

Bandwidth earns ISO/IEC 42001 certification for enterprise AI management. What does an AI certification have to do with the infrastructure behind enterprise voice systems? Increasingly, quite a lot. Bandwidth announced on August 20 that it has achieved ISO/IEC 42001 certification for its artificial intelligence management system, covering products, processes, and operations across its global organization. The certification gives Bandwidth a recognized framework for managing AI risks as enterprises put more AI-powered communications systems into production. What ISO/IEC 42001 certification means. ISO/IEC 42001 is an international standard for artificial intelligence management systems. Introduced in 2023, the standard establishes requirements for developing, maintaining, and continually improving how organizations manage AI. Rather than certifying the performance of a specific AI model, ISO/IEC 42001 focuses on organizational governance. That includes risk management, accountability, transparency, oversight, and processes for responsible AI development and use. Bandwidth says its certification extends beyond an individual application or department. Its scope covers the company's products, internal processes, and worldwide operations. That distinction matters for enterprises using AI across communications infrastructure, where models may interact with telephony systems, orchestration tools, customer data, and automated workflows. Get a First Look at the ODSC West Schedule! Check what's in store for San Francisco (Oct 27-29), featuring industry-leading tracks on LLM engineering, generative AI, and production data science. Claim 50% OFF with this limited-time discount before prices go up! AI governance moves deeper into infrastructure. The announcement comes as voice AI and agentic systems become more closely integrated with customer service and communications platforms. Bandwidth cited Gartner forecasts suggesting that 90% of enterprise software applications will include agentic AI by 2029. Gartner also expects 85% of global enterprises to require AI-enhanced security capabilities within their Communications Platform-as-a-Service (CPaaS) toolsets. For engineering and data teams, that creates a governance problem that extends beyond model development. Organizations also need controls around the infrastructure transporting data and connecting AI systems with customers. Bandwidth CIO Kade Ross pointed to control, observability, and auditability as key requirements as companies scale voice AI. Building on existing security standards. The ISO/IEC 42001 certification complements Bandwidth's existing ISO/IEC 27001 certification for information security. Bandwidth also owns and operates its communications network rather than relying entirely on third-party infrastructure. The company says this allows its AI management framework to extend across its Communications Cloud, Maestro orchestration platform, network operations, and associated AI capabilities. For enterprises evaluating AI infrastructure vendors, certifications such as ISO/IEC 42001 could become another factor in procurement and risk assessments. They do not eliminate the need for technical evaluation, but they provide evidence that formal AI governance processes exist beyond individual models and applications. What's next? As AI moves deeper into enterprise infrastructure, teams will need to think beyond model accuracy and consider governance, observability, security, and operational controls across the entire AI stack. At ODSC AI West 2026, practitioners and industry leaders will explore how organizations can build, evaluate, govern, and deploy production AI systems responsibly. If you're working on the transition from experimental AI to reliable enterprise systems, ODSC AI West offers an opportunity to learn directly from the people tackling those challenges in practice.
