British Museum sued over missing audio description for Bayeux Tapestry exhibition.

British Museum sued over missing audio description for Bayeux Tapestry exhibition. A blind visitor's lawsuit is forcing cultural institutions to confront what reasonable access actually costs. Articles " Associations, museums, auctions " British Museum sued over missing audio description for Bayeux Tapestry exhibition. A blind visitor has filed a lawsuit against the British Museum for failing to provide audio description for its Bayeux Tapestry exhibition, a rare loan of the 11th century embroidered cloth that depicts the Norman Conquest across nearly 70 meters of linen. The tapestry has not been in the UK since its creation, and the museum did not prepare audio narration describing the visual narrative for blind and low vision visitors. The museum has responded by offering in person guided tours and is now considering an app based option. That is an admission of failure, not a defence. Audio description does more than read labels aloud. It describes composition, colour, spatial relationships, the direction of figures, the expression on faces, the architecture of a building in the background. For a textile like the Bayeux Tapestry, which tells its story through sequential embroidered panels showing Harold's oath, the comet, the battle, the death, you either describe the images or you deny access to the story itself. The Equality Act 2010 requires reasonable adjustments for disabled visitors. What counts as reasonable is increasingly tested in court. In 2021, Scott LaBarre sued the Museum of Modern Art in New York under the Americans with Disabilities Act for inadequate accessibility during exhibitions. The Royal National Institute of Blind People reported in 2022 that only 37% of UK museums regularly offer audio described tours. This is not an edge case. It is standard practice failing to meet legal requirements. What it's worth? Find out GAUK Antiques for more articles, videos and its powerful ai valuation tool. Uncover the story and the value behind your finds. For the art market, this has immediate implications. Auction houses and dealers already produce condition reports, provenance documentation, and catalogue descriptions. Those documents are now being scrutinised for accessibility compliance. If you sell through major platforms or institutions, you may be required to provide alternative format catalogues, detailed visual descriptions suitable for screen readers, or audio narrated lot information. Insurance valuations are starting to require the same level of descriptive detail. A painting is not adequately documented if a blind assessor cannot understand what it depicts from the written record. That means more granular descriptions of composition, palette, brushwork, and condition, which costs time and money to produce. The Victoria and Albert Museum expanded its audio description services in 2023 following accessibility audits. The Metropolitan Museum of Art faced criticism in 2019 for limited audio description during blockbuster shows. These are not fringe complaints. They are legal obligations institutions ignored until litigation made ignoring them expensive. The British Museum's offer of guided tours is a stopgap. Guided tours require booking, limit visitor numbers, and impose a schedule on someone who may want to spend an hour studying three panels or skip past twenty. An app based solution is better but still reactive. The lawsuit exists because the museum did not build accessibility into the exhibition from the start. What this means for anyone trading, insuring, or displaying art is that accessibility is no longer optional infrastructure. It is a compliance issue with financial and reputational risk. If you run a gallery, manage a collection, or consign to auction, you need to know whether your documentation meets accessibility standards under current equality legislation. The Bayeux Tapestry will return to France. The lawsuit will likely settle or result in policy changes. But the principle is now established. If you put something on public display and charge for access, you cannot exclude blind visitors by simply failing to describe what they cannot see. The tapestry itself was made in the 1070s, probably in Canterbury, and is one of the most complete visual records of 11th century material culture: armour, ships, architecture, clothing, gesture. Someone embroidered every detail. Now someone has to describe it. Free Identification Upload a photograph - its AI identifies maker, period, condition and estimated value in seconds.

Met Museum breaks ground on new Tang Wing.

Met Museum breaks ground on new Tang Wing. Construction begins in New York on major museum expansion David Breslin, Virginia Maloney, Keith Powers, Jose Serrano, Frida Escobedo, Max Hollein, Julie Menin, Agnes Hsu-Tang, Oscar L Tang, Gale Brewer, Tricia Shimamura and Brett Gaillard at the Met Museum The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has broken ground on its new wing dedicated to modern and contemporary art. Designed by Frida Escobedo, the first woman to design a wing in The Met's 156-year history, the five-storey Tang Wing will offer 69,500 square feet of exhibition space within a 126,000-square-foot building. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on 15 September, bringing together city and state officials, Met leaders, donors and trustees to mark the start of construction. The Met's Tang Wing will expand exhibition space for its modern and contemporary art collection in New York. The Met's board of trustees co-chairs Candace K Beinecke and Hamilton E James said: "Today's groundbreaking marks a major milestone for The Met and for New York City. "This new wing will be a spectacular setting for our visitors to explore modern and contemporary art in fresh and exciting ways, ensuring that the museum remains an important resource for our millions of visitors from across the five boroughs and around the world. "We're deeply grateful to the many trustees, donors, elected officials, and civic partners for their steadfast and enthusiastic support that has made this extraordinary endeavour possible." Expected to open in 2030, the renovation and expansion of the existing modern and contemporary wing will improve accessibility, infrastructure and sustainability, and connect to the rest of The Met. The Met Museum's Tang Wing will provide 69,500 square feet of exhibition space for modern and contemporary art Previously reported at $550m, the project has raised $670m to cover the full cost of construction and a significant portion of a new endowment to operate the wing. Escobedo said: "The design for the Tang Wing weaves together the many architectural styles that make up The Met's campus, honouring each building's own history while creating a space that is distinctly of our time." "Working with Frida Escobedo on her visionary design has been an enormous privilege, and together with our trustees and donors we are excited to celebrate this important milestone as we begin the work that will turn that vision into a reality," said Max Hollein, CEO and director of The Met. Anna Wintour's 'mortified' employees 'whispering behind her back' over John Galliano Met Gala scandal.

Anna Wintour's 'mortified' employees 'whispering behind her back' over John Galliano Met Gala scandal. Published Aug. 31, 2026, 4:02 p.m. ET See more of its coverage in your search results. Anna Wintour's employees are allegedly "mortified" over the handling of the John Galliano Met Gala 2027 scandal. "Everybody is whispering behind [Anna's] back, but nobody is saying anything to her face," a Condé Nast insider exclusively told Page Six Monday. "They're all 'yes-ma'aming' her like they've always done." The source alleged that concerns about the controversial decision to honor Galliano were being discussed behind the scenes. However, Page Six is told staffers were reluctant to challenge the famously powerful Met trustee - and Vogue's global editorial director - directly. "That's how something like this gets this far in the first place. People are afraid of losing their jobs, so nobody wants to be the person who stands up and says, 'This is a bad idea,'" the insider explained. "There were definitely people who had concerns, but no one wanted to challenge her directly, and now people are mortified by how this was handled." Reps for Wintour and Condé Nast did not immediately respond to Page Six's requests for comment. As Page Six previously reported, the backlash came to a head early Monday when Galliano, now 65, announced he was withdrawing from the Metropolitan Museum of Art's planned 2027 "John Galliano: Horizons" exhibition following mounting criticism over his history of antisemitic and racist remarks. "After much reflection and discussion with all those involved, I have decided, with great sadness, that it is best for the exhibition not to take place at this time," Galliano said in a statement. The former Dior designer added that he did not want the controversy surrounding him to "place the Met in a difficult position" or distract from the work of its Costume Institute. Galliano also acknowledged that an exhibition honoring his career would be painful for some people - adding that he remains accountable for any previous hurt he caused the Jewish and Asian communities. Wintour supported Galliano and his decision, stating in her own statement (per the official Met Gala website), "John's decision that the exhibition devoted to his work should not take place at this time is very courageous and a measure of the man he is." She added, "I believe this is the right decision, and both he and the Museum have my full support." The museum also said that details of a new exhibition will be announced "at a later date." Earlier this month, the museum and Vogue announced plans to honor Galliano with an exhibition celebrating his career, despite the designer remaining a deeply polarizing figure following his infamous 2011 scandal. Galliano was fired from Dior after he was caught on video making antisemitic and racist remarks at a Paris café, including declaring, "I love Hitler." He was later found guilty in France of public insults based on a person's origin and fined. The planned tribute immediately drew scrutiny, particularly because the 2027 Met Gala is scheduled for the first Monday in May, which falls on Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. Before the exhibition was announced, Wintour, 76, Galliano and Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton had met New York City's "influential rabbis and Jewish leaders" in a bid to "get their thoughts on the potential issues with next year's planned fashion extravaganza." "There is no one more deserving of an exhibition of this scale than John Galliano," she previously said in a statement. "His body of work - at Dior, Givenchy, Margiela, his namesake label and more - combines erudition and creativity, darkness and light, the past, the present, the future all smashing together in a brilliant way." She continued, "He's a great designer and his career isn't defined by a moment - something that he will live with for the rest of his life. The exhibition won't shy away from any of the darkness in John's past. It's part of what has shaped him. The show will take in the full arc of his career and grapple with all of it."
