Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalency degree is required.
  • A minimum of two years of animal care experience is required.
  • The employee must complete assigned work schedules with little to no supervision and make correct decisions in daily routines.
  • The employee must be able to work weekend and holiday hours, with occasional overtime required to cover absences.
  • The employee must comply with DLAM and NU-IACUC policies and procedures.
  • The position involves daily exposure to laboratory animals and their waste products.
Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate animal care for assigned responsibilities.
  • Follow assigned schedules for husbandry, care, and housing of laboratory animals with little to no supervision.
  • Feed, water, and clean the cages of assigned animals.
  • Report animal health or behavioral problems to the appropriate staff.
  • Maintain animal inventory records and Animal Husbandry and Room Maintenance Records for each assigned room.
  • Work in all or most areas of the animal facility.
  • Report facility and environmental issues to the Director.
  • Provide guidance and on-the-job training to new animal technicians.
  • Assist with receiving and processing incoming animals and supplies.
  • Sanitize and maintain animal research facility equipment.
  • Operate cage-wash, autoclave, and other animal-facility-related equipment.
  • Assemble and prepare caging supplies for use in the animal facility.
  • Perform euthanasia on small laboratory animals.
  • Participate in technician meetings scheduled by supervisory staff.
  • Participate in continuing education training programs throughout employment as requested.
  • Provide specialized technical assistance to DLAM veterinary staff and investigator staff when trained to do so.
  • Perform other duties necessary for the proper functioning of the animal facility as assigned by supervisory staff.
Desired Qualifications
  • ALAT certification is preferred.
