College of Engineering to host more than 170 companies for Fall Career Expo on Thursday. By Nicki Gorny The University of Toledo College of Engineering will host more than 170 companies for its Fall Engineering Career Expo on Thursday, Sept. 24. UToledo's College of Engineering is one of only eight in the country with an integrated cooperative education program, ensuring that engineering science students graduate with a full year of relevant work experience on their resume. Its semiannual career expos support students seeking these co-ops, as well as students and alumni seeking post-graduation employment. A student networks with a company representative at the Spring Career Expo. The College of Engineering hosts semiannual career expos to support students seeking co-ops, as well as students and alumni seeking post-graduation employment. Approximately 800 students and alumni are expected to network with company representatives at the upcoming expo, which is slated from 9 a.m. to noon in Savage Arena. "The stellar reputation of our co-op program is one of the reasons that students come to The University of Toledo College of Engineering - and one of the reasons that companies list us as one of their target universities," said Geoffrey Humphrys, the assistant director of the Shah Center for Engineering Career Development. "The Engineering Career Expo is one of the most effective platforms for our talented engineering students and graduates to connect and network with our highly committed employers and alumni. Our students are working literally all over the world and truly making an impact on the global economy." The college's long-standing co-op program supports a new experience-based learning initiative being rolled out across the University. Applied Skills for Career Experience, Networking and Development (ASCEND) ensures that all incoming undergraduate students, regardless of major, will engage in an experience-based learning opportunity before they earn their degree, setting them up for success in careers in a wide variety of industries. The College of Engineering counts 27 corporate partners that routinely welcome cohorts of students for co-ops. Several corporate partners are set to participate in the Fall Engineering Expo, including Cenovus Energy, Douglas Co., First Solar, Libbey, Lincoln Electric, Matrix Technologies, Nexus Engineering Group, North Star BlueScope Steel, NSG/Pilkington North America, PCC Airfoils, Rudolph Libbe and SSOE plus four companies on the Fortune 500: Dana Inc., Marathon Petroleum, Owens Corning and Vistra. Schaeffler Group, a global automotive and industrial supplier with a facility in Wooster, Ohio, is also set to participate alongside additional companies including Applied Environmental Solutions, Cook Medical, Midmark Corp., Monroe Environmental, Steris Endoscopy, Toledo Refining Co. and USG. "Along with providing a great engineering education, The University of Toledo is one of the best schools for employers to secure co-op opportunities throughout the year," said Scott Schrader, director of industrial engineering at Schaeffler Group. "UToledo offers a three-semester rotation program that only a few other universities in the country have implemented. Personally, I've struggled to find co-op opportunities outside of the summer semester, but UToledo's program is designed to support both students and employers in maximizing the learning experience." Blake Liffick, a senior studying chemical engineering, is among the students who have benefited from the Engineering Career Expos. "As a freshman attending the career expo for the first time, I felt overwhelmed and unsure of how to approach employers - especially without any prior work experience," Liffick recalled. "I worried I wouldn't have much to offer. But I quickly discovered that the true value of the expo lies in building connections. One conversation I had that day led to a co-op opportunity the following year, and eventually two more rotations with the same company." Liffick recently accepted a full-time position at the company where he completed his co-ops. He's set to launch his career following his anticipated graduation in December. "The University of Toledo College of Engineering provides a powerful platform for students to network," he said. "And for many - including myself - it becomes a pivotal step toward launching a successful career." Photo Caption: A student networks with a company representative at the Spring Career Expo. SSOE's glass experts to attend, exhibit, and present at the 87th Annual Glass Problems Conference in the Glass City.

SSOE's glass experts to attend, exhibit, and present at the 87th Annual Glass Problems Conference in the Glass City. TOLEDO, Ohio, September 1, 2026 - SSOE Group (www.ssoe.com), an internationally ranked architecture and engineering firm, announced that its glass industry experts will attend, exhibit, and present at the 87th Annual Glass Problems Conference and Symposium from September 14-17, 2026, at the Glass City Center in Toledo, Ohio. The conference is organized by the Glass Manufacturing Industry Council and Alfred University and endorsed by The American Ceramic Society. A leader in the glass and manufacturing industries, SSOE is ranked the #2 Manufacturing Design Firm by Engineering News-Record. Its glass experience spans over six decades and five continents, working with glass manufacturers on every type of glass plant project including batch house, furnace, production line, packaging, utilities, and environmental projects. From container glass to specialty glass, fiberglass, and float glass, SSOE's experienced staff apply their knowledge and familiarity to develop innovative solutions for their clients. Throughout the conference at Booth #69, SSOE will showcase how its multidisciplinary teams support glass manufacturers across the full lifecycle of facility and process projects, from feasibility and front-end planning through detailed design, construction, commissioning, and operation. The firm will also host evening hospitality at Booth HB13, welcoming clients, partners, and industry professionals to the Glass City and the home of SSOE's world headquarters. SSOE's Electrical Department Manager Michael Mitchell, PE presents alongside Senior Applications Engineer Stan Rutkowski of RoMan Manufacturing, Wednesday September 16, 2026 at 2:00- 2:30 p.m. Their session, "Adding Electrical Boost to a Furnace: From Concept to Operation," will explore the practical considerations glass manufacturers face when increasing electrical usage in an existing furnace. As glass manufacturers evaluate electrification as a way to increase production, improve efficiency, and respond to evolving energy and carbon considerations, electric boost offers a proven path forward. By delivering electrical energy directly through molten glass, electric boost can supplement traditional combustion systems and, in some cases, provide a significant share of a furnace's total energy input with hybrid designs achieving an electric share of 60% to 80%. While electric boost is established technology, successful implementation depends on disciplined engineering, early coordination, and execution across the entire facility. Mitchell and Rutkowski will take attendees beyond the technology itself to examine the engineering required to take an electric boost project from concept to operation. Their discussion will address the practical realities of implementation, including the business case, infrastructure planning, operational impacts, and safety considerations that can influence project success. "Adding electric boost is much more than installing electrodes in a furnace," said Mitchell. "The electrical, utility, mechanical, controls, and safety systems are all interconnected. Understanding those dependencies early allows manufacturers to make better-informed decisions to reduce risk, control costs, and establish a realistic path from feasibility through startup." About The Annual Glass Problems Conference and Symposium This conference is the premier U.S. event in the glass manufacturing industry. It brings together decision-makers, managers, and engineers from glass manufacturing companies working in batch, development, energy, Research and Development (R&D), furnace technology, sourcing, logistics, sales, sustainability, and more to address real-world manufacturing issues and solutions. About SSOE Group As an internationally ranked architecture and engineering firm, SSOE is known for delivering unparalleled client value that advances the AEC industry. The Generational Differences in the Workplace Conference will take place Friday, October 30, 2026, at the Hilton Garden Inn in Perrysburg, Ohio, bringing together business leaders, human resource professionals, managers, emerging professionals, community partners and workplace teams for a day focused on strengthening collaboration across generations. SSOE's commitment as Legacy Sponsor represents a significant investment in the conference and its mission to help organizations better understand, engage and lead today's increasingly multigenerational workforce. "We are incredibly grateful to SSOE for stepping forward as our Legacy Sponsor," said Dr. Willie McKether, President of WLM Cultural Communications and conference presenter. Today's workplaces can include employees from several generations working side by side, each shaped by different experiences, expectations, communication preferences and definitions of success. The conference will help leaders better understand those differences and provide practical strategies for creating workplaces where employees across generations can contribute, collaborate and thrive. The event will feature nationally recognized generational leadership expert Dr. Tim Elmore, Founder of Growing Leaders, as keynote speaker, along with Dr. Willie McKether, a business anthropologist whose work examines generational differences through the lens of culture and organizational performance. Conference discussions will address topics including: * Why generational values and differences matter in today's workplace * What leaders can do now to create greater workplace harmony * Understanding generational communication styles * Strategies for improving organizational and bottom-line performance * Employee engagement and retention * Leadership development and knowledge transfer * Building stronger cross-generational teams "Organizations are navigating one of the most significant workforce transitions we have seen," McKether said. "The companies that succeed will be those that learn how to translate across generations rather than expecting everyone to think, communicate and work in exactly the same way. SSOE's support helps us bring that conversation to leaders throughout Northwest Ohio and beyond." As the conference's exclusive Legacy Sponsor, SSOE will receive premier recognition throughout the event and conference communications, reflecting the company's leadership-level commitment to advancing the conversation around the future of work.
