Requirements
- A college or university degree from an accredited school or college is required.
- Knowledge and skills developed through education and at least two years of relevant work experience in a related job discipline are required.
- Current or eligible State of Illinois licensure or registration is required.
- Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office is required.
- The Advanced Practice Provider provides direct patient care in collaboration with consulting physicians and the multidisciplinary health team, within approved clinical privileges.
- The role formulates plans of care, communicates follow-up plans, prescribes and evaluates pharmacological therapies according to protocol, and develops diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions.
- The role attends high- and low-risk deliveries as needed, initiates cardiopulmonary resuscitation, stabilizes compromised infants, and stabilizes and transports patients as needed.
- The role identifies family education needs, supports teaching, provides in-service and outreach education, and serves as a preceptor to Advanced Practice Provider students.
- The role participates in quality improvement monitoring, policy and procedure development and evaluation, self and peer evaluation, and clinical research projects as appropriate.
- The role develops and coordinates Advanced Practice Provider training and professional development activities.
- The role may provide on-call or after-hours coverage, work at other sites as required by neonatology coverage agreements, and work in a clinical setting with exposure to blood and infectious materials.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care and formulate a plan of care with physicians, nursing staff, and the multidisciplinary health team in accordance with approved clinical privileges.
- Communicate follow-up plans and disposition with follow-up healthcare providers.
- Prescribe and evaluate pharmacological therapies according to protocol.
- Attend high- and low-risk deliveries as needed.
- Initiate cardiopulmonary resuscitation and perform therapeutic techniques to stabilize compromised infants in delivery rooms, Neonatal Intensive Care Units, emergency rooms, and referring hospitals as needed.
- Stabilize and transport patients as needed.
- Maintain an in-depth understanding of current professional and legal trends, concepts, and issues related to practice.
- Identify educational needs of family members and assist with teaching as appropriate.
- Ensure that systems and resources are in place to maintain established standards of care.
- Participate in self and peer evaluation to improve quality of care.
- Participate in the development, review, and evaluation of policies and procedures.
- Participate in developing and implementing quality improvement monitoring.
- Participate in in-service and outreach education programs.
- Act as a resource for clinical skills for staff on or off the unit.
- Participate in clinical research projects conducted by supervising physicians as appropriate.
- Serve as a preceptor to Advanced Practice Provider students.
- Evaluate goals and outcomes based on benefit versus burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness for the patient, family, and organization.
- Develop diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the goals and outcomes of each patient’s plan of care.
- Respond to adverse drug reactions, with special attention to vulnerable populations such as infants, children, pregnant and lactating women, and older adults.
- Develop and coordinate Advanced Practice Provider training and professional development activities.
- Perform other related work as needed.
Desired Qualifications
- An advanced nursing degree from an accredited school or college or completion of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc.
- Completion of approved Neonatal Nurse Practitioner training.
- Two years of clinical experience in a level III or level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit as a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit nurse or Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Advanced Practice Provider.
- Neonatal certification from the National Certification Corporation.
- Ability to obtain an Illinois advanced practice nurse license by the start date.
- A current registered nurse license in Illinois or eligibility to receive one by the start date.
- For Physician Assistants, a current Physician Assistant license or registration in Illinois or eligibility to receive one by the start date.
- For Physician Assistants, certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants by the start date.
- Proficiency in resuscitation, intubation, and line placement.
- Proficiency in EPIC.
- Proficiency in computer use.
- Ability to properly document and bill for services provided.
- Willingness to enter into a written collaborative agreement with the collaborating physician upon hire.
