Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management or related field with strong understanding of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology
  • Ten years of experience in a healthcare setting with substantial Health Information Management (HIM), clinical coding, and/or Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) experience
  • Five years in a leadership role within HIM/CDI/health information management
  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) - American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) - State of Florida (FL) certification
  • Proficient in basic computer skills including Microsoft Office applications, experience with electronic medical record systems, computer-assisted coding software and document imaging systems
  • Knowledgeable to serve as a subject matter expert on hospital health information management operations, legal and regulatory requirements
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, effective time management and ability to work in a high-stress environment
  • Ability to oversee budgeting, staffing, training, and performance management
  • Ability to collaborate with clinicians and executives and provide strategic leadership to coding, CDI and HIM operations
  • Ability to oversee release of information and document imaging operations and ensure patient confidentiality
Responsibilities
  • Oversees the development and implementation of departmental strategy, goals, plans and standards consistent with clinical, administrative, regulatory, and ethical requirements of the organization
  • Provides operational leadership regarding the electronic medical record system and other HIM-related applications, including computer-assisted coding, medical transcription and document imaging
  • Oversees the implementation and ongoing performance of the coder intern training program
  • Maintains strict adherence to patient confidentiality according to Memorial Healthcare System standards and regulatory requirements
  • Oversees HIM custodial responsibility for the storage, release, and confidentiality of the legal medical record in both paper and electronic formats
  • Provides professional expertise to the Privacy Department related to patient identity/fraud issues and patient requests for medical record amendments
  • Collaborates regularly with key stakeholders to promote communication, support revenue integrity, improve business processes, ensure reliability of internal and external reporting, and promote standardization across the healthcare system
  • Leads departmental operational and financial planning to ensure cost-efficient operations and maximize profitability
  • Plans, organizes, manages and facilitates budgets for HIM and Document Imaging including capital, operating, labor, and position control
  • Chairs the Legal Medical Record Committee and participates in committees related to Privacy, Security, Compliance, Finance, Forms Management, EMR Connect and various informatics groups
  • Ensures patient data integrity overseeing patient identity, medical transcription, document scanning, deficiency analysis, release of information, and clinical documentation integrity program
  • Provides leadership for hospital-based inpatient and outpatient coding, CDI education and training
  • Researches and monitors industry developments related to HIM and serves as project lead or sponsor for complex HIM projects
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures that guide HIM and Document Imaging business processes to ensure quality and patient safety
  • Oversees planning and monitoring of onsite and remote staffing including hiring, orientation, evaluation, disciplinary actions, productivity and quality monitoring, and staff education initiatives
Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management or related field (additional detail)
  • Any one of RHIA or RHIT or other AHIMA/Florida certifications as acceptable but not required
  • Experience with healthcare privacy and security regulations and compliance
  • Experience with legal medical record management and release of information
  • Experience leading large scale health information management operations across multiple facilities
  • Experience with EMR systems, CDI programs, coding audits and quality assurance processes
