NCDOT plans to reduce Wrightsville Beach bridge replacement timeline. Wilmington StarNews Aug. 14, 2026, 1:34 p.m. ET * The N.C. Department of Transportation is targeting a spring 2030 completion for the Wrightsville Beach bridge replacement project. * A new construction method is being used to expedite the project, which was originally slated for completion in 2032. * The $105 million project will replace three bridges in three phases, keeping two lanes of traffic open throughout construction. The N.C. Department of Transportation is targeting an earlier completion date for the replacement of three Wrightsville Beaches bridges. The agency is aiming to complete the project by spring 2030, NCDOT Division 3 engineer Trevor Carroll announced at a news conference on Aug. 14. The initial timeline anticipated that construction would be completed by 2032. Construction is scheduled to begin before the end of this year, but after the busy Labor Day weekend. Rather than a traditional delivery model, the department plans to deliver the project via the Construction Manager/General Contractor method, which expedites the process by allowing NCDOT to select a contractor earlier in the development process. This is the first time this method has been used in Division 3, Carroll said. "The benefits of this delivery method are early collaboration, the opportunity to accelerate some schedules, control cost, minimize risk and to have concurrent activities such as our design and construction phasing happening together," Carroll said. Projects must have less than $500 million in construction costs to be eligible for the delivery method. They must fit into one of several categories, including emergency projects and projects where design and construction need to be expedited for the public good. Carroll emphasized that completion by 2030 is a target NCDOT hopes to achieve and is subject to change. He noted that concerns from surrounding residents in part led NCDOT to fast-track the project. The total cost of the project is $105 million. NCDOT is partnering with RS&H for design and Balfour Beatty as a contractor. Phases of the project. The replacement project will be completed in three phases. Phase one will close the bridge over Lees Cut on W Salisbury Street. Phase two of the construction will begin work on the longer W Salisbury Street Bridge over Banks Channel. Work will also begin on the new Causeway Bridge, just north of the existing bridge. The existing bridge will remain open at this time. W Salisbury Street will be closed to thru traffic from Lookout Harbor to the entrance of Pelican Drive during this phase. After work is complete on the two W Salisbury Street bridges, phase three will close the existing Causeway Bridge. Traffic will shift onto the newly constructed bridge, while crews begin demolition on the existing bridge. Two lanes of traffic in each direction will remain open throughout the duration of the project. Additionally, Carroll said that NCDOT is working with the U.S. Coast Guard to reduce the number of openings of the Heide Trask Memorial Bridge during construction. The specific details of the arrangement are still being finalized and will be announced at a later date. The project does not include the replacement of the drawbridge. New bridge designs. The new bridges over W Salisbury will have one lane in each direction with dedicated bike lanes on both sides. A 12-foot multi-use path will be separated from vehicle and bicycle traffic by a concrete wall. The new Causeway Drive bridge will have two lanes in each direction with dedicated bike lanes on both sides. 'Topping out' marks major construction milestone for Redmond airport terminal expansion. By Hennebery Eddy The terminal expansion at Redmond Municipal Airport (RDM) reached a major construction milestone on July 7 as project partners gathered to celebrate the signing and placement of the final structural beam. The glue-laminated (glulam) beam was provided by TimberLab and manufactured in Portland, Oregon - and its placement marks a significant step forward for the $180M mass timber project. Before the beam was lifted into place, project team members signed it and attached a ceremonial tree, honoring the collective effort and dedication of everyone who contributed to reaching this milestone. Hennebery Eddy team members at the topping out ceremony To meet growing demand, a major expansion is underway at Central Oregon's primary airport - its first expansion since 2008. Hennebery Eddy, in partnership with RS&H and Morrison-Maierle, designed the expansion of RDM to increase holdroom capacity, streamline operations, and improve amenities and accessibility for passengers. The design respects the existing airside building and expands the terminal to encompass the richness of the region's landscape. The new concourse creates a clearer, more efficient, and welcoming experience and strengthens its role as a regional connector. Under construction by Skanska as the CM/GC, the new terminal is expected to open in November 2027. Thanks to the Skanska team for hosting this milestone topping-out event, as well as to all its project partners, RDM airport staff, and stakeholders.

Firms of the Year are chosen by ENR editors based on factors that include regional revenues, new initiatives, current projects, community and industry contributions and other considerations.
