  • Evaluate control-environment strength for related programs or risk areas using varied information sources, data points, and control-testing results.
  • Interpret indirect tax requirements published by Tax Planning and assess the accuracy and completeness of their implementation in operational processes and programs.

  • Present assurance insights, findings, and recommendations to operational teams, business stakeholders, and team leadership to support evidence-based indirect tax risk oversight.

About the company

Amazon runs the largest online store in the United States and rents cloud computing to businesses and governments through Amazon Web Services. AWS pioneered renting computing power over the internet, and Amazon built its own delivery network to get orders to customers quickly. Shoppers buy from Amazon and from independent sellers on its store, and Prime members pay a subscription for fast free shipping, streaming video and music, and other perks. AWS rents out computing power, storage, databases, and AI tools so companies can run software without owning servers, and Amazon also makes Kindle e-readers and Echo speakers with the Alexa assistant. Jeff Bezos founded Amazon in 1994, and it is based in Seattle, Washington.

What believers are saying

  • AI drives growth: AWS's AI and custom-chip sales each more than doubled, passing $25 billion a year by June 2026.
  • Stock grants gained value: shares hit a record in August 2026, making Amazon the fifth company to reach $3 trillion.
  • Ads are a third engine beside stores and AWS: they grew 26% to $19.8 billion in the June 2026 quarter.

What critics are saying

  • AWS's lead is shrinking: in the June 2026 quarter, Google Cloud grew 82% and Microsoft's Azure 43%, versus AWS's 37%.
  • Job security has slipped: Amazon cut 30,000 corporate jobs in October 2025 and January 2026 to reduce management layers.
  • Expect five office days a week: Amazon ended its three-day hybrid policy for corporate staff in January 2025.

What makes Amazon unique

  • Most of Amazon's profit comes from cloud: AWS made 21% of sales but 60% of operating profit in mid-2026.
  • Amazon is America's biggest parcel carrier by volume: it handled 6.9 billion packages in 2025, more than the Postal Service.
  • Writing matters more than slides: Amazon meetings open with silent reading of a six-page memo instead of PowerPoint.

World's six richest lose $130B as AI spending fears hit tech stocks

The world's six richest people lost a combined $130 billion on Thursday as tech stocks fell on renewed doubts about returns on AI infrastructure spending. Elon Musk lost $74 billion, bringing his net worth to $914.7 billion, as SpaceX shares sank nearly 9%. Investors weighed a $35 billion cash-flow gap and Musk's confirmation that SpaceX is considering a merger with Tesla. Tesla fell 2%, after it cut its full-year capital expenditure guidance to $20 billion from over $25 billion. Mark Zuckerberg lost $18 billion as Meta fell 8%. The company raised the low end of its capital spending forecast by $5 billion, to $135 billion to $145 billion. Jeff Bezos lost $11 billion as Amazon fell nearly 5%. Larry Page and Sergey Brin lost a combined $15 billion, and Michael Dell lost $12 billion as Dell Technologies dropped 7%.

$1,000 monthly in Amazon could grow to $91.7K in five years, base case shows

Investing $1,000 a month in Amazon for five years would put in $60,000 and grow to about $91,715 by 2031 in a base-case projection, a 52.9% return, according to 24/7 Wall St. That assumes a share price of $547.86 by October 17, 2031, from $250 today. Cloud unit AWS grew 37% year on year last quarter, its fastest in 18 quarters. It runs at a $169 billion annualised revenue rate with a $496 billion backlog. Advertising revenue rose 26% to $19.8 billion. Spending is the main risk. Amazon plans about $200 billion in capital spending in 2026, and trailing 12-month free cash flow turned negative at -$7.6 billion. Scenario outcomes range from $72,664.57 to $101,398.77.

Tech giants offer $1B community payouts and less secrecy as data centre backlash grows

US tech giants are promising host communities more money and fewer secrets as opposition to data centres grows ahead of the midterm elections, with control of Congress and 36 governors' offices at stake. Meta and Amazon each plan to spend $1 billion on financial incentives for host communities in the coming years. Google says its local programme investment will reach $1 billion by the end of 2027, and it will pay full real property taxes on new campuses. Amazon, Microsoft, and Google have stopped requiring officials to sign non-disclosure agreements. Meta says it is reviewing their use. Critics are unconvinced. One activist called Amazon's commitments "propaganda.

Net income was $77.7 billion, a net margin of close to 10.8%, and operating cash flow was $161.4 billion. Jefferies: Amazon automation and $27B logistics spend could lift retail margins

Amazon could widen its retail margins through warehouse automation and a larger logistics network, Jefferies says. The broker sees automation as a long-term edge that cuts exposure to labour shortages and wage inflation, even if near-term savings are limited. Amazon has deployed more than 1 million robots, yet only 40% to 45% of its US small-sortable fulfilment centres are highly automated, a logistics expert estimates. A $1 hourly wage rise for warehouse and driver staff would add about $1.1 billion to operating costs. Amazon has about $27 billion in visible capital spending planned over the next couple of years. It could also grow its US delivery stations from about 575 to 950 by 2030, taking on more parcels now handled by UPS and the US Postal Service. Grocery remains hard, with delivery costs of $10 to $12 per order.
