Clothing brand pulls 6,000 sweaters from shelves due to risk of death from fire. Published July 18, 2026, 11:29 p.m. ET See more of our coverage in your search results. A major clothing brand has initiated a recall for approximately 6,000 women's sweaters due to a failure to meet federal flammability safety standards, causing risk of "serious burn injuries or death," according to a recent U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) notice. The safety recall impacts the Madewell Double V-Neck Pullover and V-Neck Cardigan styles, available in both light blue and cream colors. The CPSC says that "recalled sweaters violate the mandatory standard for clothing textiles, posing a risk of serious burn injuries or death." These items were sold at Madewell and T.J. Maxx stores, as well as through their respective websites, between December 2024 and October 2025. To determine if a garment is part of the recall, owners should check the internal labels. Affected sweaters feature a "Madewell" neck tag and a side seam label marked with style numbers NT611, NT612, or the code "HO24." Although no injuries have been reported to date, the company has documented one instance of a sweater catching fire. The CPSC advises consumers to immediately cease wearing the garments to avoid potential burn hazards. Madewell is providing full refunds to all affected customers. To claim a refund, you must cut the sweater in half, take a photo of the destroyed garment, and email it to [email protected] before disposal.
Recall issued by Madewell for women's sweaters due to fire risk. By: Kelly Broderick Posted 8:22 AM, Jul 17, 2026 and last updated 10:48 AM, Jul 17, 2026 A recall has been issued by Madewell for two women's sweaters due to risk of serious injury or death from burn hazards. According to officials, the recalled sweaters violate the mandatory standard for clothing textiles. The recall involves two styles of Madewell-branded Double V-Neck Pullover and V-Neck Cardigan women's sweaters. The sweaters were sold with or without buttons in light blue and cream and in sizes XS through L. The sweaters have long sleeves and a V-neck. You can also see "Madewell" and the size are printed on the neck label and "Style #NT611" or "Style #NT612" and "HO24" on the sewn-in side seam label. These were sold at Madewell and T.J. Maxx stores nationwide and online at Madewell.com from December 2024 through October 2025 for between $138 and $148. If you purchased this product, you're urged to stop using it and contact Madewell for a full refund in the original form of payment or store credit. Consumers will be asked to destroy the sweaters by cutting them in half and send a photo of the destroyed sweater to [email protected]. Consumers should then dispose of the destroyed product. There has been one report of a sweater catching on fire.
Madewell expands US retail footprint with three new store openings. May 22, 2026 Madewell is expanding its US retail footprint, as the lifestyle brand prepares to open three new stores in key markets this summer. The first to open is Madewell's debut store in Sag Harbor, Long Island, which started welcoming customers on May 20. The opening builds on the success of the brand's 2024 pop-up with Goop. Located at 102 Main Street, the store features Madewell's women's collection and marks its fourth Long Island location. The second location, in Greenwich, Connecticut, is set to open its doors on June 10 and will feature a new dual-concept from Madewell. The store, located at 171-173 Greenwich Avenue, marks the brand's third store in the area and will sit alongside its existing locations at Westport and Westfarms. The third store to open will be in Bend, Oregon, and also sees Madewell debuting its first dual-concept store in the state. Located at 520 SW Powerhouse Drive, the new store is set to complement Madewell's existing women's and men's standalone stores in Tigard's Bridgeport Village. The renewed retail push comes years after Madewell opened its first men 's-only stores in 2019. Madewell currently operates approximately 150 standalone stores across 40 states, and its retail growth has been modest at best in recent years. Madewell's store count only narrowly edges out sister brand J. Crew, which operates roughly 100 full-price stores and over 330 J. Crew Factory stores. The brand once had its sights set on Wall Street, but reportedly shelved its plans after analysts pushed back, with some accusing J. Crew Group of inflating Madewell's worth. The infusion of cash from an IPO never came, and in 2020, the parent company filed for bankruptcy.
Madewell is opening three new stores between May and June in New York, Connecticut and Oregon. The J.Crew Group-owned retailer will open its first Sag Harbor, New York, location on Wednesday, following a successful 2024 Hamptons pop-up with Goop. In June, Madewell will launch two dual-concept stores selling men's and women's clothing in Greenwich, Connecticut, and Bend, Oregon. The expansion marks a modest increase for the brand, which operates approximately 150 stores. Madewell's growth has slowed significantly since its earlier expansion plans, which included a potential IPO and men's-only locations after launching its first men's collection in 2018. J.Crew Group filed for bankruptcy in 2020 after abandoning plans to take Madewell public.
