Requirements
  • High school or GED graduation is required.
  • A graduation from an accredited medical assistant program is strongly preferred; for Levels II-IV, the program should be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools.
  • Certification by AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA, or ARMA is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required.
  • Level I requires no experience; Level II requires 1 year of clinical experience as a Certified Medical Assistant in a clinical setting; Level III requires 2 years; Level IV requires 3 years.
  • The ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions is required.
  • Working knowledge of sterile techniques, special procedures, routine and special patient treatments, sanitation, personal hygiene, health and safety precautions, infection control procedures, and safety precautions is required.
  • The ability to document and communicate pertinent information and maintain effective working relationships with patients and clinic staff is required.
  • Typing skills and knowledge of medical terminology are required.
  • Heavy lifting and the ability to transport stretcher and wheelchair patients may be required.
  • For Levels II and III, the ability to independently seek out resources and work collaboratively is required.
Responsibilities
  • Take medical histories and record vital signs.
  • Explain treatment procedures to patients and prepare patients for examinations and procedures.
  • Assist medical and nursing staff during examinations and procedures.
  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens and perform basic laboratory tests in the clinic or office.
  • Take electrocardiograms, remove sutures and staples, and change sterile and non-sterile dressings.
  • Promote patient and family understanding of educational content and involvement in the plan of care, and document in the patient record.
  • Dispose of contaminated supplies and perform instrument processing, high-level disinfection, and sterilization of medical instruments.
  • Telephone prescriptions to a pharmacy, prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician, and authorize drug refills as directed.
  • Perform other clinical functions delegated and supervised by the physician.
  • Greet patients, answer telephones, schedule appointments including arrival appointments in MaestroCare, check out patients, and schedule referrals.
  • Arrange hospital admissions and laboratory services.
  • Update and file patient medical records, complete insurance forms, handle billing and bookkeeping, receive copayments, and collect account balances.
  • Handle correspondence and order clinical and clerical supplies and forms.
  • Perform other administrative duties as directed.
  • Serve as a liaison for clinic activities such as Joint Commission and falls activities when requested, and participate in clinic committees.
  • Complete daily clinic preparation processes, including registration, scheduling, charge posting, and order entry.
Desired Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited medical assistant program is strongly preferred.
  • For Levels II-IV, graduation from a medical assistant program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools is strongly preferred.
