Requirements
  • Documented application of software engineering or systems engineering principles.
  • Experience with embedded or cloud system development and secure configuration.
  • Knowledge of computer networking fundamentals and Windows and Unix-like operating system administration.
  • Proficiency with software programming, programming languages, and development environments, including C, Java, and Python.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity testing and penetration testing tools and methodologies.
  • Ability to express technical information clearly and concisely in documents and presentations for senior leaders.
  • Active government security clearance at the Secret level.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Science is required.
  • For the Advanced Professional level, 5 or more years of relevant experience are required.
  • For the Intermediate Professional level, 2 or more years of relevant experience are required.
  • For the Professional level, no prior relevant work experience is required.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen to apply.
  • Must be eligible to obtain a government security clearance, participate in the ARL drug testing program, and comply with electronic and physical monitoring requirements applicable to federal contractors.
Responsibilities
  • Research techniques and technologies for secure system design, implementation, and hardening.
  • Use software engineering, systems administration, and cybersecurity expertise to address established needs and investigate solutions to emerging requirements.
  • Assist the Cyberspace Operations Research Department Head by maintaining sponsor relationships through on-site technical discussions, preparing and presenting technical materials, and handling project-related correspondence.
  • Enhance processes for technical controls implementation, architectural enhancements, and security test and evaluation projects.
  • Apply project management principles and methods to lead tasks or projects.
  • Provide guidance to lower-level research and development engineers to foster professional growth.
  • Understand broad strategic objectives and contribute to them.
  • Nurture and maintain relationships with major customers and grantors of external research and development grant funding.
  • Identify grant or project follow-on work and persuade customers or grantors to fund it.
  • Initiate new project concepts, seek funding, develop technical proposals, and present them to customers or grant sponsors.
  • Mentor department staff in developing technical, project, and business development skills.
  • Travel periodically to remote locations to support testing as part of a small team of researchers, engineers, and technologists.
Desired Qualifications
  • Apply artificial intelligence to security testing, evaluation, and issue mitigation or remediation.
  • Experience with microcontroller or single-board computer design and implementation, such as Arduino, STM32, or Raspberry Pi.
  • Experience with radio frequency signal analysis using oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, or software-defined radios.
  • Experience with industrial control system communication protocol security.
  • A demonstrated history of successful project initiation efforts.
  • Experience automating cybersecurity testing workflows, such as using Ansible playbooks.
  • Experience with Agile software development methodology and tools.
  • Experience with Atlassian products such as JIRA and Confluence.
