Requirements
  • 7–10 years of experience in marketing and paid advertising, including both brand and performance marketing, operating at strategic and hands-on levels.
  • Deep media expertise across digital channels such as social, programmatic, search, YouTube, and connected TV, as well as traditional channels such as out-of-home and radio, to drive upper-, mid-, and lower-funnel key performance indicators.
  • Experience building or scaling marketing systems, workflows, or team structures.
  • Ownership of measurement and reporting for a marketing portfolio, including setting key performance indicators, running post-mortems, and using data to shape future strategy.
  • Experience leading through influence in a highly cross-functional organization, aligning Product, editorial, and social teams around shared priorities and generating buy-in across a complex organization.
  • Experience briefing and directing creative development with in-house teams and outside agencies, with strong judgment about campaign creative and messaging.
  • A successful history of owning, developing, and communicating long-term strategies for growing reach, acquisition, engagement, and retention across a portfolio of channels.
  • Experience managing and empowering a scrappy, nimble, and data-driven team.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and the ability to build and maintain structure and core priorities while navigating inbound requests.
Responsibilities
  • Oversee brand and performance media and campaign activation across owned and third-party platforms, including go-to-market strategy and media for KQED’s brand campaign.
  • Set annual strategic and operational marketing plans covering objectives, success metrics, resourcing, budget, and prioritization across reach, acquisition, engagement, and retention.
  • Design and build scalable marketing systems, workflows, and infrastructure, including processes, tooling, briefing frameworks, and reporting frameworks.
  • Own the strategic relationship with KQED’s media agency, including requests for proposals, contracts, briefs, and overall media strategy.
  • Design audience journeys and go-to-market models for new KQED priorities and programs.
  • Set strategic direction for growth-campaign creative and messaging, briefing and directing in-house creative teams and outside agencies, and partnering with the brand team on campaign creative.
  • Own measurement across the marketing portfolio, ensuring campaigns are tracked, reported on, and optimized, and use post-mortem insights to guide future investment and growth.
  • Build relationships with local media partners to maximize trade, added-value inventory, and unique marketing opportunities.
  • Collaborate with editorial teams across digital video, live events, podcasts, and news to drive discovery and engagement with KQED content and experiences.
  • Partner with Product on growth strategies for KQED’s website and app and maximize the effectiveness and measurement of paid advertising strategies.
  • Partner with the Audience Intelligence team to deepen audience understanding and ensure paid-campaign efficacy.
  • Drive innovation across marketing by evaluating new technologies, platforms, and best practices and determining what to scale.

  • A sharp eye for design and aesthetics at both campaign and brand levels.
  • Familiarity with media agency management and advertising technology/programmatic platforms, including The Trade Desk and demand-side platforms.
  • Understanding of audience behavior across media types and platforms, including drivers of retention and repeat engagement in addition to acquisition.
  • Interest in applying for-profit marketing approaches within a nonprofit framework.
  • Interest in and appreciation for the public media mission and the Bay Area.

KQED provides public media for Northern California, including radio and TV programs, news, and education content. It distributes NPR and PBS programming and produces and shares its own local news, culture, and science coverage through on-air broadcasts, online articles, and podcasts. The product works by offering live and on-demand radio and TV streams, scheduled programs, and digital content across multiple platforms (radio, TV, website, apps) to inform and engage the local community.
