About the job

Requirements
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance.
  • Have a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field and 10–15 years of relevant experience, a master's degree and 8–13 years of relevant experience, or a PhD and 4–9 years of relevant experience.
  • Be proficient with the systems engineering V-Model, including decomposition, integration, verification, and validation.
  • Have experience developing and decomposing requirements, including definition, flow-down, implementation, and traceability.
  • Have hands-on experience verifying requirements through test, analysis, demonstration, and inspection.
  • Have broad interdisciplinary engineering knowledge across electrical, mechanical, software, and firmware domains.
  • Be familiar with military and aerospace standards, including environmental qualification (MIL-STD-810) and EMI/EMC compliance (MIL-STD-461).
  • Have the ability to assess technical, cost, and schedule risks.
  • Be able to lead and communicate with interdisciplinary technical teams during proposal, design, and execution of small- to mid-sized programs, including mentoring junior engineers.
  • Be able to present complex technical concepts clearly to internal and external customers, including responding to challenging questions.
  • Be able to manage multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail and a system-level perspective.
Responsibilities
  • Lead major design reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR, and TRR) and help shape system direction and technical decisions.
  • Develop and manage system requirements, ensuring clear flow-down, traceability, and high-quality engineering documentation.
  • Coordinate cross-discipline engineering across software, hardware, electrical, mechanical, and other teams to drive cohesive system design and verification.
  • Define and maintain system interfaces to align teams and support integration.
  • Own the Systems Engineering Management Plan (SEMP) and support configuration management to keep the program technically organized and controlled.
  • Identify and manage risks and opportunities that influence system performance, schedule, and mission success.
  • Support technical planning and execution for design, integration, and formal testing activities across the program lifecycle.
  • Perform systems analysis to evaluate design options, break down complex problems, and guide engineering decisions.
  • Develop mission CONOPS and provide technical insight and recommendations to the Program Manager.
Desired Qualifications
  • Have a technical degree in electrical or computer engineering or a closely related field.
  • Have hands-on experience with circuit card design and manufacturing, including schematic capture, layout, and production support.
  • Have experience designing ruggedized assemblies, including 5+ years in electrical and/or mechanical development for harsh environments.
  • Have experience supporting fielded military systems, including troubleshooting, sustainment, and lifecycle considerations.
  • Have practical experience qualifying and certifying hardware to military environmental and EMI/EMC standards (MIL-STD-810 and MIL-STD-461).
  • Be familiar with advanced systems engineering tools, such as requirements management tools (e.g., DOORS or Jama) or MBSE tools (e.g., Cameo with SysML).

View

Space Dynamics Laboratory develops satellites, sensors and mission software for national defense, space exploration and scientific research. The nonprofit research corporation is wholly owned by Utah State University and operates as a university affiliated research center sponsored by the US Space Force. Its teams design and build instruments and spacecraft, test them for flight and develop ground systems that process mission data. Work spans government research partnerships and engineering programs, with support from initial mission concepts through deployment. The laboratory's operating roots date to 1959, and it took its present form through a 1982 merger; its headquarters are in North Logan, Utah.
