Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and an accredited nurse practitioner program, including preceptorship; a Master of Science in Nursing is required.
- Hold certification from the applicable professional organization.
- Have at least one year of clinical experience as a certified registered nurse practitioner within the last four years in a related primary care or ambulatory care setting.
- Be credentialed and remain in good standing through the Veterans Health Administration.
- Maintain a valid, unrestricted license in the state of employment or in any U.S. state or territory, depending on VA contractual requirements.
- Maintain current Basic Life Support certification and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification as required by the individual VAMC contract.
- Maintain current, unrestricted Drug Enforcement Administration registration.
- Have proficiency in written and spoken English.
- Have strong computer skills.
- This is a safety-sensitive position.
Responsibilities
- Diagnose and treat veterans under the direction and responsibility of a supervising physician.
- Examine patients for symptoms of organic or congenital disorders.
- Develop and implement patient management plans and assist in providing continuity of care.
- Order and perform diagnostic tests, including X-rays, electrocardiograms, and laboratory tests; interpret results, identify deviations from normal, notify patients, and provide follow-up care.
- Counsel patients on prescription medication use, educate patients, assess mental health issues, and provide routine health maintenance.
- Evaluate records from medical providers outside the VA and provide co-managed care according to VA rules.
- Complete all clinical reminders due at each patient visit.
- Document medical records within 24 hours of each patient encounter.
- Respond appropriately and promptly to patient requests, alerts and notifications, consults, orders, laboratory results, and diagnostic studies in accordance with VA guidelines.
- Follow the VA formulary process and consult protocols.
- Complete clinical documentation and encounters by close of business in accordance with VA guidelines.
- Complete all VA and company training requirements.
- Fulfill compliance requirements for the Office of Inspector General, Joint Commission, Environment of Care oversight, laboratory compliance, and related areas.
- Focus on achieving clinical outcomes through specified VA guidelines.
- Provide customer service to veterans in person and by phone, and to colleagues and clinic visitors.
- Participate in clinic outreach events supporting enrollment initiatives.
- Support patient enrollment and retention by guiding patients on scheduling, follow-up visits, or nurse visits as needed.
- Support new clinical and operational initiatives.
