About the job

Requirements
  • At least 5 years of experience in CAD modeling, digital surfacing, Class-A surfacing, digital sculpting, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience developing complex surface geometry for physical products.
  • Strong proficiency in professional CAD and surfacing tools such as Autodesk Alias, Rhino, CATIA, NX, or similar.
  • Strong understanding of surface continuity, curvature, transitions, and surface quality.
  • Experience translating industrial design intent into robust, manufacturable CAD geometry.
Responsibilities
  • Develop high-quality surface geometry that captures industrial design intent while accounting for mechanical, structural, packaging, and manufacturing requirements.
  • Work across complex assemblies to resolve geometric and packaging challenges, integrating industrial design surfaces with structural and mechanical systems.
  • Partner closely with Industrial Design and Mechanical Engineering to iterate on geometry and solve product integration problems.
  • Support development of prototypes, mockups, and production-intent assemblies to evaluate surface quality, fit, function, durability, and user interaction.
  • Develop robust CAD geometry that progresses from early concepts through prototyping and into manufacturing.
  • Develop and improve modeling, automation, and computational workflows to accelerate design iteration and improve CAD data quality and consistency.
  • Translate industrial design concepts, sketches, scans, or models into robust CAD geometry.
  • Identify issues in physical builds and incorporate learnings back into CAD.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with Class-A surfacing.
  • Experience with SubD modeling and translating SubD concepts into production-quality CAD geometry.
  • Experience with CAD automation or computational design using Python, Dynamo, Grasshopper, or similar tools.
  • Hands-on experience with rapid prototyping, fabrication, casting, silicone, urethane, composites, textiles, softgoods, or other prototype development methods.
  • Experience supporting products from early concept through production.

About the company

1X is an engineering and robotics company that builds android robots to augment human labor in real-world work settings. The company’s flagship product, EVE, can move through spaces, turn corners, and open doors, using shared autonomy to operate with human guidance as needed. The product relies on specialized actuator systems paired with artificial intelligence to perform tasks that humans would normally do, enabling enterprises to boost productivity and address labor shortages. 1X differentiates itself by commercializing enterprise-ready androids and targeting the US market, leveraging its unique actuator design and AI stack to enable smooth, human-like movements that can navigate real environments. The company’s goal is to provide reliable, scalable robotic helpers that can carry out a range of tasks autonomously or with partial human control, increasing operational efficiency for enterprise customers.

What believers are saying

  • 1X reported 10,000 NEO preorders within five days after October 2025 launch.
  • Hayward capacity reaches 10,000 robots yearly, supporting 2026 deliveries and ramp learning.
  • 1XWM released in 2026 strengthens robot reasoning and improves NEO task performance.

What critics are saying

  • NEO still needs remote human operators, exposing privacy backlash and autonomy skepticism in 2026.
  • A $20,000 household robot faces weak demand if buyers reject teleoperated chores.
  • If NEO failures dominate, 1X loses trust and the consumer humanoid market stalls.

What makes 1X unique

  • 1X opened Hayward factory in April 2026, vertically integrating humanoid production.
  • NEO targets consumer homes, not warehouses, with $20,000 early-access pricing and subscriptions.
  • EQT plans 10,000 NEO deployments from 2026 through 2030 across portfolio companies.

$20,000 humanoid robot Neo folds laundry and waters plants — but needs remote human help to work

Robotics company 1X has launched preorders for Neo, billed as the world's first consumer-ready humanoid robot, priced at $20,000 or $499 monthly for a six-month commitment. The 5-foot-6-inch robot can perform household tasks like unloading dishwashers and watering plants, and features a built-in large language model. Neo has a soft body, moves slowly, carries up to 55 pounds, and runs for four hours per charge. However, the robot occasionally falls over and requires significant human assistance. Complex tasks require remote operation by 1X employees wearing VR headsets. The robot features cameras and can be remotely accessed for training purposes. 1X claims privacy safeguards are in place, though concerns remain about having a camera-equipped robot in homes.

OpenAI-backed 1X releases world model to power humanoid robots

Norwegian humanoid robot company 1X, backed by OpenAI, has released a new world model called 1X World Model (1XWM) designed to enhance robots' understanding and reasoning in the physical world. The model generates future videos from text and initial images during inference, then infers robot actions from these predictions. Trained on web videos and limited robot data, 1XWM targets 1X's Neo humanoid robot, currently in mass production for home use. Neo can generate predictive videos and reason about household tasks. However, the company noted the current model requires a dual modelling process for video and action generation and has not yet achieved true zero-shot execution. The development aims to give robots general behavioural capabilities for domestic scenarios.
