3 AI stocks off highs: Vertiv, Applied Optoelectronics and Innodata pullback explained

Three AI-related stocks — Vertiv Holdings, Applied Optoelectronics, and Innodata — are trading well below their 2026 highs despite strong operational growth. Vertiv's second-quarter sales rose 24% to $3.27 billion, with adjusted operating margin expanding 410 basis points to 22.6%. The company sells power and cooling solutions for AI infrastructure. Insider Monkey counted 112 hedge funds holding Vertiv in Q2, up from 96 in Q1. Applied Optoelectronics posted record revenue of $191.9 million, with 800G volume more than doubling from Q1. Management expects 800G and 1.6-terabit demand to exceed production capacity through mid-2027. However, the company reported a $22.8 million GAAP loss. Innodata's revenue grew 58% to $92.1 million, with adjusted EBITDA rising 92% to $25.4 million. The company provides data engineering and model-evaluation services for AI applications. Each stock faces distinct risks around timing, customer concentration, and operational execution.

Vertiv to showcase critical infrastructure solutions for Africa's mining sector.

Vertiv to showcase critical infrastructure solutions for Africa's mining sector. Electra Mining Africa 2026 By Staff Writer Vertiv, a global leader in critical digital infrastructure, will participate as an exhibitor at Electra Mining Africa 2026, together with XCEED Infrastructure Technologies, a provider of end-to-end, custom-engineered electrical and power solutions. The event runs from 7 to 11 September 2026 and will take place at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, Nasrec. At the XCEED/ Vertiv stand, number P51, Electra Mining attendees can meet with Vertiv representatives and learn how Vertiv's portfolio of critical digital infrastructure solutions can help address common challenges in mining and industrial applications, including: · Vertiv EnergyCore Grid, a scalable, high-capacity battery energy storage system (BESS) designed for constrained grids, hybrid power systems and remote locations. Supporting grid-connected and island operation, it delivers fast-acting stabilisation, seamless integration and flexible deployment for critical infrastructure. · The Vertiv PowerUPS 6000 Industrial UPS (uninterruptible power supply) system, which redefines versatility for commercial and industrial applications like mining, manufacturing, transportation, logistics, cement, and oil and gas with a compact, single- or three-phase design (6-200 kVA). Engineered for resilience, it delivers high performance in harsh physical and electrical conditions to protect mission-critical infrastructure. · The company's broad range of pre-engineered infrastructure solutions that integrate power, cooling and monitoring for modular scalability and up to 50% faster deployment than traditional data centre builds. This includes the Vertiv SmartAisle edge data centre solution, as well as the Vertiv SmartMod Max modular data centre system. "At Vertiv, we are seeing ongoing interest from mining organisations across Africa looking to improve power stability, integrate alternative energy sources, enhance operational efficiency and support future growth through modern infrastructure," says Wojtek Piorko, managing director for Africa at Vertiv. "Electra Mining Africa 2026 provides an important opportunity for us to further engage with industry stakeholders and demonstrate how solutions such as battery energy storage systems (BESS), industrial UPS systems, integrated infrastructure solutions and intelligent monitoring can help mines improve operational resilience and support energy-efficiency objectives."

Billionaire-led funds pile into Vertiv and Equinix as AI data center demand surges

Billionaire-led hedge funds increased their holdings in two AI data centre stocks during the second quarter, according to analysis of over 900 funds. Vertiv Holdings attracted 32 billionaire-led funds, up from 28 in the first quarter. Equinix had 27 such funds holding stakes, up from 26. Vertiv manufactures equipment for data centres. In Q2, revenue rose 24% year over year, whilst adjusted operating margin improved to 22.6%. Adjusted earnings per share increased 60%. The company benefits from an industry shift towards 800-volt DC power systems, which reduce energy waste and cooling costs. Vertiv's equipment supports this transition, allowing Nvidia racks to connect directly. The International Energy Agency projects global data centre electricity use will roughly double from 485 TWh in 2025 to about 950 TWh in 2030.

Data centre giant Vertiv acquires US microgrid specialist in $1.45bn cash deal.

Data centre giant Vertiv acquires US microgrid specialist in $1.45bn cash deal. 2 minutes read Vertiv has agreed to acquire UtilityInnovation Group, a US microgrid and power systems firm, for approximately $1.45 billion in cash, in a deal aimed at helping data centre operators secure power faster as grid constraints slow AI infrastructure rollouts globally. The New York-listed critical infrastructure firm said the acquisition, announced on September 2, carries additional consideration of up to $1.15 billion tied to earnings targets over the next 12 and 24 months. At the base purchase price, the deal values UIG at roughly 13 times its expected 2027 earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation, a multiple Vertiv said would fall significantly if the full earnout is paid. The company expects the transaction to add to its adjusted earnings per share within the first year of completion. UIG, founded in 2020 and headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina, designs microgrid controls, onsite power generation systems and behind-the-meter architecture for data centres, with additional operations in Dublin, Ireland, and manufacturing sites in North Carolina and New Jersey. The acquisition extends Vertiv's power and cooling portfolio upstream from the data centre itself to the point where it connects to the electricity grid, adding capabilities in onsite generation, energy storage orchestration and microgrid-specific switchgear. "For AI data centre operators, competitive advantage increasingly depends on how quickly they can move from site selection to first token," said Vertiv chief executive Gio Albertazzi. He said the addition of UIG's technology would allow the company to support grid-connected sites, bridge-to-grid deployments and fully islanded sites running on their own power generation, without tying customers to a single energy technology or supplier. UIG founder and chief executive Sidney Hinton said the company was built to solve power challenges for data centre operators through flexible, technology-agnostic designs, adding that Vertiv's scale and service network made it a strong fit for the business he had built. Power availability has become one of the biggest bottlenecks in data centre expansion as AI workloads drive unprecedented demand for electricity, pushing power architecture decisions earlier into the site-planning process. Vertiv said UIG's behind-the-meter design work typically begins before equipment is even selected, allowing the combined company to help shape a site's power blueprint from the outset rather than retrofitting capacity later. The deal is subject to regulatory approval and customary closing conditions, and is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026. J.P. Morgan Securities is advising Vertiv on the transaction, with Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney serving as legal counsel. Morgan Stanley is advising UIG, with Davis Polk & Wardwell as its legal counsel. Vertiv to acquire UtilityInnovation Group for $1.45B to speed AI data centre power deployment

Vertiv has agreed to acquire UtilityInnovation Group for approximately $1.45 billion in cash, with up to $1.15 billion in additional payments based on EBITDA targets over 12 and 24 months. The acquisition, valued at roughly 13 times UIG's expected 2027 EBITDA, adds microgrid controls, onsite generation orchestration and behind-the-meter power architecture to Vertiv's portfolio. The deal extends Vertiv's capabilities from grid interconnect to chip level, helping data centre operators accelerate deployment amid power constraints. Founded in 2020 and headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina, UIG designs microgrid systems for AI data centres across the US and Europe. Vertiv expects the transaction to be earnings accretive in the first year. The deal is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to close in Q4 2026.
