Requirements
  • Completion of a two-year accredited Medical Laboratory Technician training program plus Medical Laboratory Technician certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology within 90 days of hire or American Medical Technologists certification within 90 days of hire; alternatively, a bachelor's degree in a chemical or biological science and two years of Laboratory Technical Assistant training or experience performing standardized laboratory tests in the specialty areas where high-complexity testing will be performed.
  • General knowledge of laboratory terminology, equipment, materials, techniques, regulations, and safety.
  • Skills in handling laboratory specimens, record keeping, and laboratory equipment.
  • Skill in using computer systems, including word processing, dedicated Laboratory Information System or Hospital Information System, and electronic medical record systems.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions accurately and operate and maintain standard laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to work independently within established guidelines, adjust to rapidly changing priorities, and apply critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work in a multitasking environment and display technical skills at various laboratory stations.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and at multiple laboratory or hospital sites.
  • Ability to work around blood and body fluids, chemical hazards, radiation, noise, crowded environments, temperature-control problems, and prolonged use of gloves and other personal protective equipment.
Responsibilities
  • Check specimen accuracy, labels, and testing requirements.
  • Perform computer data entry in the Laboratory Information System and electronic medical record system for Clinical Pathology and Anatomical Pathology samples.
  • Label samples, requisitions, and specimen containers accurately.
  • Log and triage samples in a timely manner.
  • Centrifuge samples and transfer them to appropriately labeled containers.
  • Direct samples to technologists and testing areas or store them for future testing.
  • Notify technologists or appropriate laboratories when priority work is available.
  • Manage appointments for bone marrow assistance.
  • Assist physicians at the bedside during bone marrow aspiration and biopsy according to written procedures.
  • Observe aspirations, determine specimen adequacy, prepare slides, and prepare or preserve specimens for additional testing.
  • Prepare and ensure kit tests are processed and sent to performing laboratories.
  • Follow written procedures and policies.
  • Prepare samples for testing, including loading automated analyzers for chemistry, immunoassay, hematology, and urinalysis.
  • Assist technologists to ensure testing meets or exceeds turnaround times.
  • Perform waived testing or provide testing support as requested.
  • Perform other laboratory duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • A certificate or associate's degree from an accredited Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Laboratory Assistant training program.
  • Completion of a certified Laboratory Assistant training program that includes 45 credit hours in chemical or biological science plus one year of clinical laboratory experience.
  • Forty-five credit hours of college-level chemical or biological courses and two years of experience as a Laboratory Assistant in a clinical laboratory.
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Assistant.
  • CLMA, American Medical Technologists, American Society for Clinical Pathology, or equivalent certification.
