Rivian s R2 just helped it set a new sales record.

Rivian s R2 just helped it set a new sales record. Deliveries jumped roughly 45% compared to the same quarter last year, with Rivian delivering more than 19,000 EVs. Rivian sold more electric vehicles than ever in the third quarter, thanks in large part to the launch of its new, more affordable R2 SUV. The company said Friday morning that it built 19,751 vehicles and delivered 19,248. That's roughly 45% more than it delivered in the same period last year. While Rivian didn't break out how many of those were R2 SUVs, this was the first full quarter of sales of the new vehicle after it launched in June. The company said Friday that it will release its full third-quarter financial results on October 29. Rivian has big plans for the R2, which currently starts at just under $60,000. The company is betting that it will sell between 20,000 to 25,000 R2 vehicles by the end of the year, which would make it one of the fastest-selling EVs in U.S. history - second only to Tesla's Model Y. Rivian also plans to make cheaper models available that will cost as low as around $45,000. If Rivian hits those numbers, the company believes it can sell between 65,000 and 70,000 vehicles this year, including its R1 lineup of vehicles and its commercial electric van. That would be its best sales year ever, as the company has spent the last few years stuck at around the 50,000-vehicles-sold mark. Rivian is currently building the R2 at its factory in Normal, Illinois, where it recently expanded the production space to accommodate the new SUV. But Rivian is also building a brand new factory outside Atlanta, Georgia, where it expects to be able to build as many as 300,000 vehicles per year in the near future, with the option to expand that capacity down the road. Rivian needs the R2 to sell well in order to staunch years of heavy losses, due in part to the company's expensive infrastructure required to support this mass-market vehicle. But Rivian has also signed a deal with Uber to make robotaxi versions of the R2 SUV. Rivian believes robotaxis represent such a big potential market that, in March, the company pushed back its goal of reaching profitability in 2027 to invest more money into autonomy.

Rivian issues R2 recall for poorly tightened battery packs.

Rivian issues R2 recall for poorly tightened battery packs. The company says around 14 vehicles may be affected, and that it has resolved the issue on the assembly line. Rivian's recall of its R2 vehicles due to poorly tightened battery packs is a notable development in the electric vehicle (EV) industry. While the number of affected vehicles is relatively small, at around 14, the issue highlights the importance of rigorous quality control measures in the manufacturing process. This is particularly crucial for EV makers, as battery safety is a top concern for consumers and regulators alike. The fact that Rivian has already resolved the issue on its assembly line is a positive sign, indicating that the company is proactive in addressing potential problems. This swift response is likely to help maintain customer trust and confidence in the brand. Moreover, this recall comes at a time when Rivian is ramping up production and expanding its market presence, making it essential for the company to demonstrate its commitment to quality and safety. As the EV industry continues to grow and evolve, Indexnews.com, LLC. can expect to see more companies facing similar challenges. To watch next: how Rivian's competitors, such as Lucid Motors and Fisker Inc., address their own quality control and safety concerns. Additionally, investors and analysts will be closely monitoring Rivian's progress in resolving this issue and its impact on the company's production and delivery targets. Rivian knows your teen doesn't need 1,025 horsepower.

Rivian knows your teen doesn't need 1,025 horsepower. Rivian's software boss told us that Teen and Valet Mode are arriving in early 2027 because teenagers probably shouldn't have access to so much power or hardcore off-road features. Published Sep 29, 2026 1:09 PM EDT Would you let your kid get behind the wheel of a 1,025-horsepower vehicle? What about a 656-hp mainstream crossover? I sure wouldn't let 16-year-old Joel get behind the wheel of those vehicles. I'm lucky to be alive after my teenage years, if we are honest about it. In an exclusive interview, Rivian Chief Software Officer Wassym Bensaid told The Drive the automaker is developing a Teen Mode and Valet Mode for its vehicles. Bensaid noted parents outside the Feder household understand the dangers of these 5,000- to 7,000-pound EVs having the ability to rocket from 0-60 mph in just 2.5 seconds. So it's doing something about it. "We got that feedback from the community. The only reason we did not get it yet is we really wanted to do it right, and it will leverage on all the framework of the digital key integration that we have," Bensaid said. "When the kids register, if they put their true age, the app will behave in that case in teen mode," he explained. But we all know that 16-year-old Joel would've never admitted when setting up his Rivian profile that he was actually 16. That would have kept him from having up to 1,025 hp at his disposal. "You as an owner can associate and say my first kid, this is a teen profile, my second kid is not a teen profile," Bensaid said. This will give the owner the ability to create profiles for various kids who are various ages and/or maturity levels. "I think the magic there is with that new framework of digital key management, and what we call the new user profile architecture; we will be able to set a ton of preferences. So some of them will be we will limit the horsepower or we will limit access to off-road modes." But who's choosing what is and isn't limited? The owner or Rivian? I asked. "That's a great question. So what we will do as well is provide optionality in terms of how you want to configure it. So, we will not necessarily give you the option to say, okay, set it to have a slider [of] 500, 600 [hp], but here will be a category which is limit the horsepower. There will be another category which is can't limit the stability control, another category which is off-road, yes or no? And then, from five to ten settings, we will basically enable the owner to configure that in a generic way for 10 months. So this is one of the reasons why we really want to get it right, because we believe that it will provide so much flexibility and control for parents," he added. The software boss confirmed the entire setup will be comparable to Rivian's RAD Tuner with sliders and toggles on the screen to control the settings. Should your child be like 16-year-old Joel, Bensaid noted, "That's the beauty with digital key, you can not get out of it unless you have a password. The physical key and the keycard will not have access to defaults. It means that we will give you the possibility in the profile menu to say, I associate the key card or key fob with a specific profile." Valet mode will be separate from Teen Mode. "We will give you the optionality to lock some of the closures, don't allow access to the front trunk, don't allow access to the gloveboxes," he explained. Teen Mode and Valet Mode are currently slated for early 2027 across all Rivian models, including the R1T, R1S, and R2. Got a tip? Send us a line at [email protected]

Rivian controller Jon Franklin exits after CFO Claire McDonough's departure to GE Vernova

Rivian Automotive's corporate controller Jon Franklin is leaving the electric vehicle maker, following the departure of long-time CFO Claire McDonough. McDonough announced in August she would step down on 30 October to become CFO of GE Vernova after nearly six years at Rivian. Franklin, who spent four and a half years with the company, announced his exit on LinkedIn but did not disclose his next position. Derek Mulvey, vice president of finance, has been appointed interim CFO whilst the company searches for a permanent replacement. The departures come as Rivian struggles to achieve profitability whilst ramping up vehicle deliveries. Morningstar forecasts the company will not reach companywide operating profits until 2030.

Ford recalls 11,000 pickup trucks over faulty rearview display screens.

Ford recalls 11,000 pickup trucks over faulty rearview display screens. Sep 28, 2026, 9:26 AM Ford is recalling 11,405 Ranger pickup trucks over a problem that can cause its central screen to lose power and the image from its rearview camera, according to a notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration - an issue caused by "potentially counterfeit parts" used by a Chinese manufacturer. Key facts. * In a recall report published by the NHTSA, Ford identified a faulty central screen manufactured in China and used in some vehicles as the source of the problem, noting the company's internal reviewers found cracked capacitors on the screens' circuit boards. * Ford's reviewers determined the screens were manufactured with "potentially counterfeit parts." * Losing rearview camera image can cause the vehicles to fail compliance with federal motor vehicle safety standards around rear visibility, according to an NHTSA notice, and could cause an increased risk of crashes for drivers. * The automaker is sending out letters notifying owners of the potential safety risks associated with the faulty screens by Oct. 5, but also said a remedy for the problem is still "under development." * Ford said it is not currently aware of any accidents or injuries related to the problem, but did note there were 15 warranty claims "potentially related to this condition." Which vehicles are impacted? The recall is limited to just the 2026 Ford Ranger pickup truck. Owners can check to see if their vehicle was impacted by searching their VIN in the NHTSA's database. Key background. Recalls for problems with rearview cameras are increasingly common, and Ford's recall comes only days after electronic vehicle manufacturer Rivian recalled almost 99,000 trucks and SUVs for problems with their rearview cameras. Ford has had a number of recalls related to rearview cameras. In September 2025, the company recalled 1.45 million vehicles, including Mustangs, Transit vans and older Ranger pickup trucks for a problem that caused rearview cameras to display distorted or blank images. The company recalled another 254,000 SUVs in March of this year over software problems impacting rearview cameras. Most of these recalls, including the Rivian recall and the Ford recall in March, are fixed with over-the-air software updates. In 2025, Ford remedied the larger recall by providing drivers with free inspections at dealerships and free replacements for faulty cameras.
