Karthik Anantha Subramanian takes charge of fiction at Sun NXT.

Karthik Anantha Subramanian takes charge of fiction at Sun NXT. The writer-producer-director, formerly an executive producer at JioHotstar, will now steer movies and series across Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam 1 hour ago October 8, 2026 CHENNAI: Out with the old, in with the new, and no time wasted in between. Karthik Anantha Subramanian has wrapped up a five-year stint at JioStar and, within weeks, is already running the show at Sun NXT as head of fiction (south). Three weeks into the job, he says the energy has been amazing. His brief is wide. Karthik, who started in September 2026 and works from Chennai, will develop and produce movies and series across Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam, three of India's most closely watched streaming markets. It is a big canvas, and he arrives with more than 12 years in media production and content development as a writer, producer and director. The track record helps. At JioHotstar, where he served as executive producer from August 2021, Karthik released more than ten shows, among them Heartbeat, Label, Parachute, LBW, Good Wife and Nadu Center. That is a decent run for any producer, and a useful calling card for a platform that wants to build its fiction slate. He describes the JioStar chapter as a memorable one, spanning five years, and says he is grateful to everyone he worked with and for the experiences that challenged and shaped him. Karthik is also a pen-wielding creative, not merely a manager of them. He wrote the story and screenplay of "Chilli Chicken", a 120-minute feature film now streaming on Amazon Prime. That combination of writing, producing and directing matters in a job where the hardest part is often knowing which scripts deserve a green light. A head of fiction who has sat in the writers' chair tends to speak the same language as the people pitching. The earlier part of his career points to a taste for building things. At Crea Shakthi, where he spent six years from July 2015, he rose from training executive to creative head, a post he held from July 2019 to July 2021. As creative head, he headed operations, oversaw the release of Crea-Play, an OTT and edtech app (creaplay.app, creashakthi.com), conceptualised new creative initiatives spanning films, shows, digital content and e-books, and led an organisation of more than 20 people. Before that, he spent a year as a project engineer at Wipro Technologies, from July 2014 to July 2015. Engineer, trainer, app builder, writer, producer: an unusual path, but one that blends creative instinct with operational discipline. For Sun NXT, the appointment signals intent to deepen its original fiction across the south. For Karthik, it is a fresh chapter. "Here's to new stories, new challenges, and a new chapter," he says. If the early energy is any guide, the next few seasons of southern streaming could be worth watching.

JioStar brings Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli together in film ahead of 2027 World Cup. October 7, 2026 JioStar unveiled a new film bringing together India legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in a rare and candid coming together, setting the stage for what promises to be a monumental year ahead for Team India. With the Road to the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027 gathering momentum, the duo look ahead to an action-packed year for Indian cricket, beginning with Sri Lanka's tour of India from December 13. As India set their sights on a fourth consecutive ICC title and Rohit and Kohli look ahead to their final ICC World Cup campaign, 2027 promises to be a significant chapter in Indian cricket. Conceptualised by JioStar, the film brings together Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in a light-hearted conversation as they reminisce about their journey with Team India. Celebrating their passion for the game, the film also offers fans a glimpse into the duo's playful side, as they cheekily recreate the signature celebrations of KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja and Captain Shubman Gill. As their conversation draws to a close, the duo turn their attention to the road ahead and the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027, setting up the film's punchline: "Desh ka sawaal hai, maza toh aayega" (It's a matter of the country's pride, it's going to be fun). Fresh off a 2-1 series victory over the West Indies and with less than a year to the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027, India's upcoming ODI assignments, beginning with Sri Lanka, will be key in the team's preparations, with respect to form and combination, particularly with Kohli and Sharma headlining the playing XI. Viewers can catch all the live action from the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka from December 13-19, exclusively on JioHotstar and Star Sports Network.

JioStar taps IPL fandom that's moving beyond Hindi and English.

JioStar taps IPL fandom that's moving beyond Hindi and English. ET Online Last Updated: Oct 06, 2026, 03:10:00 PM IST Kannada, Telugu and Tamil cricket feeds have shown significant growth during TATA IPL 2026. JioStar launched 'Beyond Boundaries' to enhance advertiser partnerships with regional-language programming. The Telugu feed experienced the highest digital watch time growth at 30%. The initiative highlights various successful regional programming that connects with local audiences. JioStar aims to capitalize on the increased interest in regional-language cricket viewership. Cricket viewing is becoming increasingly regional, with Kannada, Telugu and Tamil feeds recording strong growth during TATA IPL 2026 as audiences increasingly chose to watch the tournament in languages beyond Hindi and English, JioHotstar said Tuesday. On JioHotstar, reach of the Kannada feed rose 30% year-on-year during the season, while Telugu and Tamil feeds grew 23% and 12%, respectively, JioStar said. Telugu also recorded a 30% increase in its share of digital watch time, the highest growth among the three regional languages. Against this backdrop, JioStar on Tuesday launched 'Beyond Boundaries', an initiative that will allow advertisers to partner with regional-language live cricket feeds and pre- and post-match programming. You May Like Across digital, regional-language watch-time share increased 33% during the season. Connected TV reach grew 22%, while digital video views reached 25 billion, up 8% from the previous year, according to JioStar. The growth comes as regional-language feeds increasingly draw audiences through local commentary and programming built around teams and fan bases in different markets. During IPL 2026, JioStar's regional feeds featured more than 160 commentators across 12 languages. The Telugu feed included former India players Hanuma Vihari and MSK Prasad, while the Kannada panel featured Vinay Kumar and Veda Krishnamurthy. The Tamil feed included former India players Murali Vijay and L Balaji, former Sri Lanka cricketer Russel Arnold and RJ Balaji. The regional feeds also developed market-specific programming around the tournament. The Telugu feed featured Cricket with Chai and Orange O Rangu, while the Kannada feed had Kempu Sainya and Inside RCB. The Tamil feed built match-day content around the "Ini Singapathai" narrative. "The growth of regional-language cricket reflects how cricket consumption in India is evolving. Audiences aren't just watching in greater numbers; they're choosing to experience the game in languages and environments that feel familiar to them," Anup Govindan, Head of Sales - Sports, JioStar, said. "For brands, that matters because it opens up a deeper way to participate in cricket across markets. The real opportunity is in understanding what makes each audience and market distinct and building around those nuances rather than viewing regional consumption purely through the lens of scale," he said. The regional-language coverage was built around market-specific voices rather than a single national commentary team, with former players and regional experts leading coverage across the different feeds.

Beyond clicks & impressions: how JioStar's new agentic AI 'Tara.ai' is rewriting the Connected TV ad playbook.

Beyond clicks & impressions: how JioStar's new agentic AI 'Tara.ai' is rewriting the Connected TV ad playbook. JioStar is building Tara.ai, an agentic AI platform designed to transform Connected TV (CTV) ad planning by capturing co-viewing behavior, brand data, and living room dynamics. Sep 30, 2026 - 11:41 Advertising & Marketing Discover more Brand Management Advertising & Marketing As Connected TV (CTV) rapidly transforms Indian living rooms into high-value advertising hubs, media giant JioStar is stepping up to address a fundamental industry challenge: traditional digital metrics like clicks, single-screen impressions, and quick conversions simply don't work for shared viewing. To bridge this gap, JioStar announced Tara.ai, an agentic AI platform currently in its alpha stage. Speaking at FICCI FRAMES 2026, Bhaskar Ramesh, Head of Entertainment Sales (Digital) at JioStar, shared how the platform is being built internally to plan high-impact advertising campaigns specifically optimized for premium CTV content. Brand Management Decoding Living Room consumption: the need for agentic AI. Planning media for a handheld mobile device is vastly different from targeting a household gathered around a smart TV. While mobile usage is predominantly individual and transactional, CTV viewing is inherently co-viewed, experiences peak viewing hours late in the evening and during weekend afternoons, and commands longer attention spans. Tara.ai aims to move media buyers away from metrics built around user-generated content and personal devices, introducing a multidimensional framework powered by four intelligence layers: * Brand Knowledge Graph (Advertiser-Side): Integrates product specifications, brand history, and situational advertising needs. * Content Graph (JioStar-Side): Maps shows, genres, and contextual elements across premium programming. * Deterministic Audience Data: Captures co-viewing patterns, household reach, and frequency tracking. * Viewer Segments: Analyzes granular behavioral and demographic clusters within living rooms. By fusing these layers, Tara.ai enables marketers to build precision-driven CTV media plans that reflect how families consume content together. Shoppable TV: seamlessly blending content with quick commerce. Beyond smarter ad placement, JioStar is actively testing interactive commerce experiences directly on the big screen. Highlighting a strategic integration with quick-commerce platform Instamart, Ramesh demonstrated how viewers can discover products on CTV and complete transactions seamlessly using their mobile phones in real time. This frictionless path from content discovery to doorstep delivery turns CTV into a dual-action driver for both brand awareness and quick-commerce conversions. The CTV surge: 100 million living rooms on the horizon. JioStar's heavy investment in specialized CTV capabilities is backed by massive shifts in consumer consumption on JioHotstar: * Explosive Watch-Time Growth: CTV's share of overall watch time on the platform surged from 20% in 2022 to 43% in 2026. * South India Leads the Trend: CTV accounts for over 56% of total watch time in South Indian markets. * Massive Living Room Footprint: JioStar currently reaches nearly 50 million connected living rooms monthly through its entertainment portfolio. Looking ahead, industry projections estimate that India's total CTV footprint will touch 100 million households within the next 24 to 36 months. Platforms like Tara.ai will prove vital for brands seeking to maximize ROI as the living room reclaims its place at the center of media planning.
