About the job

Requirements
  • A PhD in immunology, toxicology, pharmacology, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience, with familiarity with immune biology and toxicology, including B- and T-cell biology.
  • Demonstrated industry experience in the pharmaceutical or biotech sector as a nonclinical safety scientist supporting immunology and/or immuno-oncology programs across discovery and development activities.
  • A proven track record contributing to target evaluation and candidate optimization, and delivering toxicology programs to IND and through clinical development.
  • Hands-on expertise designing and interpreting in vitro and in vivo studies, including functional immune assays, cytokine release, immunophenotyping, and translational biomarker strategies, with the ability to interpret data in a mechanism-driven framework.
  • Strong knowledge of regulatory toxicology requirements and current industry trends in preclinical safety.
  • Ability to build integrated risk assessments and define mitigation strategies that influence project strategy.
  • Verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and influencing skills to challenge conventional thinking in a goal-focused and collegiate way.
  • A collaborative, inclusive, team-oriented mindset and ability to coordinate across multiple projects, functions, and geographies while upholding high ethical and scientific standards.
Responsibilities
  • Provide immune safety leadership from target evaluation and modality selection through candidate optimization and selection, IND-enabling in vivo toxicology packages, and clinical development milestones.
  • Combine data from in vitro immune assays, New Approach Methodologies, cellular immunology, in vivo models, omics, advanced imaging, translational biomarkers, and computational tools to build mechanistic risk assessments that guide project decisions.
  • Use scientifically robust, fit-for-purpose, 3R-aligned approaches, integrating New Approach Methodologies and other non-animal methods in line with regulatory initiatives aimed at reducing reliance on animal testing.
  • Assess on- and off-target liabilities, including cytokine release, immunomodulation, immunogenicity, and immune cell subset perturbations, and propose mitigation strategies through study design refinement, monitoring plans, and translational biomarkers.
  • Design, execute, interpret, and report GLP toxicology studies; author nonclinical summaries; contribute to IND, CTA, BLA/NDA, and other regulatory submissions; and represent nonclinical safety in interactions with health authorities.
  • Communicate integrated risk positions to project teams, cross-functional R&D partners, and internal governance bodies.
  • Contribute to the development of predictive immune safety methods, publish in peer-reviewed journals, present at international scientific meetings, and participate in the local toxicology community.
  • Provide expert nonclinical assessment of in-licensing and out-licensing opportunities.
  • Mentor and guide early-career toxicologists, supporting their scientific and career growth.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience across multiple modalities, including small molecules, biologics, and complex biologics such as bispecific immunomodulatory antibodies, engagers, or antibody-conjugates, with understanding of modality-specific immune risks and targeted delivery concepts.
  • An established record of scientific contribution through publications, conference presentations, and external collaborations.
  • DABT certification or equivalent.
  • Experience mentoring early-career scientists and leading external partnerships.

What believers are saying

  • Massachusetts expansion adds nearly 2,000 scientists and expands workforce over 50% by 2026.
  • H1 2026 revenue rose 6% to $30.7 billion, driven by oncology growth.
  • FLAURA2 and CLARITY-Gastric01 strengthened Tagrisso and sonesitatug vedotin in 2026.

What critics are saying

  • Farxiga faced US and Japan generic competition, plus China VBP, in H1 2026.
  • Forxiga patent fights continue in France, Poland, Portugal, and Australia through 2027.
  • Tagrisso dependence stays acute; one patent loss or trial failure would crush growth.

What makes AstraZeneca unique

  • Pascal Soriot doubled down on oncology, opening Cambridge R&D center October 5, 2026.
  • AstraZeneca's ADC and bispecific platform drove the $2 billion Summit Therapeutics deal September 28, 2026.
  • Tagrisso, Imfinzi, and rare disease franchises keep AstraZeneca diversified across high-value therapeutic categories.

AstraZeneca shares jump 7% as cancer drugs lift Q3 revenue to $16.21B and $1.5B savings plan

AstraZeneca shares rose nearly 7% on Friday after the drugmaker beat earnings forecasts and announced a cost-cutting plan. Investors increasingly believe its cancer drugs can replace revenue lost to cheaper generic rivals. Third-quarter revenue rose 7% to $16.21 billion. Core earnings were $2.79 per share, against $2.59 expected. Oncology revenue jumped 17%, with Enhertu sales up 35% and Imfinzi up 26%. The company plans to save $1.5 billion a year, mainly to fund research, though restructuring could cost up to $2 billion upfront. Sales of diabetes and heart drug Farxiga fell 25% amid generic competition. Chief executive officer Pascal Soriot said AstraZeneca is on track for its 2030 goal of $80 billion in annual revenue.

AstraZeneca shares jump 7.65% as it plans $2B restructuring to unlock $1.5B in annual savings

AstraZeneca shares rose 7.65% to $187.75 at 12:40 ET on October 30, after the drugmaker announced a restructuring with one-time costs of up to $2 billion. The plan targets $1.5 billion in annualised pretax benefits. AstraZeneca will reinvest the savings, mainly in its development pipeline. Third-quarter revenue reached $16.21 billion, up 7% at constant currencies. Full-year guidance was unchanged. At the targeted savings, the maximum restructuring bill equals about 1.3 years of gross savings. That figure excludes reinvestment and timing of implementation, so the earnings benefit depends on when savings arrive and how quickly the company spends them.

AstraZeneca profit jumps 23% to $3.12B as it launches $1.5B annual savings plan

AstraZeneca reported a 23% rise in third-quarter net profit and launched a programme to save $1.5 billion a year. The British drugmaker said profit after tax reached $3.12 billion, driven largely by its cancer treatments. Revenue grew 7% to $16.2 billion, with oncology making up 48% of the total. Net profit for the first nine months was $8.7 billion. The savings programme will cost $2.0 billion before it delivers the yearly benefits. AstraZeneca said it would reinvest the savings in its drug pipeline. Chief executive Pascal Soriot said the company has "multiple potential blockbuster" drugs in late-stage development. AstraZeneca remains on track for its 2030 target of $80 billion in annual revenue, up from nearly $59 billion last year. Its shares rose 3.1% in London.
