Requirements
- Graduate from or complete a program that meets eligibility requirements for registry or certification, or currently hold the required registry or certification.
- For Level I, obtain computed tomography certification within 18 months of employment.
- For Level II, have a minimum of two years of experience as a computed tomography technologist.
- For Level III, have a minimum of four years of experience within the specialty modality for which promotion is sought.
- Hold certification in Radiography, Nuclear Medicine Technology, or Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist.
- Be registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Computed Tomography within 18 months of employment.
- Hold Basic Life Support certification.
- Demonstrate proficiency in intravenous placement for contrast administration.
- Demonstrate proficiency and accuracy in performing all examination protocols.
Responsibilities
- Perform complex specialized tasks associated with operating computed tomography scanners, power injectors, and related equipment in accordance with prescribed radiation safety procedures.
- Position patients for computed tomography scans using patient-positioning devices and protective equipment as necessary.
- Perform examinations accurately according to established protocols, policies, and patient-safety standards.
- Assist the radiologist with interventional computed tomography procedures.
- Evaluate computed tomography scans for technical quality, collate processed images in exposure sequence, label them appropriately, and film or transmit them to the image archival system.
- Schedule patients for procedures and assist with clerical functions.
- Dispense or order oral contrast for patients undergoing computed tomography scans.
- Maintain accurate patient records.
- Provide orientation and training to new computed tomography technologists.
- Provide psychological and physical care for patients and their families during computed tomography scans.
- Provide education and training to student technologists.
- Coordinate scheduling and patient flow.
- Perform computed tomography-specific technical assistance on supervisor-assigned projects, including team-lead work, research and development, protocol development, charge reconciliation, and equipment demonstrations.
- Perform other duties incidental to the work.
