About the company

Gilead Sciences is a biopharmaceutical company that discovers, develops and sells medicines for HIV, viral hepatitis and other liver diseases, cancer and inflammatory conditions. Its HIV business covers both treatment, led by the once-daily pill Biktarvy, and prevention, including Descovy and Yeztugo, a lenacapavir injection given twice a year. In cancer, its Kite unit makes CAR T-cell therapies from patients' own immune cells, and Trodelvy is an antibody-drug conjugate for breast cancer. Gilead earns revenue by selling its drugs to wholesalers, specialty pharmacies, hospitals and governments worldwide after regulatory approval. The company was founded in 1987 and is headquartered in Foster City, California.

What believers are saying

  • Gilead is expanding at headquarters: it broke ground on a Foster City biologics plant in August 2026.
  • Its top seller has a long runway: generic deals keep US copies of Biktarvy off shelves until April 2036.
  • Acquisitions add teams to join: Gilead bought German drug developer Tubulis for about $3.2 billion in May 2026.

What critics are saying

  • Sales lean on one disease: HIV drugs made $5.7 billion of Gilead's $7.8 billion revenue in Q2 2026.
  • Medicare will set Biktarvy's price: officials picked it in January 2026 for negotiated prices starting in 2028.
  • Expect cuts: Gilead reported 108 Redwood City and 51 San Mateo layoffs taking effect by June 2026.

What makes Gilead Sciences unique

  • Gilead sells a twice-a-year HIV prevention shot: Yeztugo replaces daily pills with two injections a year.
  • Gilead now fully owns a myeloma cell therapy: it bought partner Arcellx for about $7.8 billion in April 2026.
  • Gilead makes cell therapies in-house: Kite runs its own CAR T plants in California, Maryland and Amsterdam.

Biktarvy growth halves to 7% as it drives 48.7% of Gilead's sales

Gilead Sciences' HIV drug Biktarvy is growing more slowly, raising questions about the company's reliance on it. Sales rose 6.8% in fiscal 2025, down from 13.3% a year earlier, and reached $3.8 billion in the second quarter of 2026, up 7%. Biktarvy made up 48.7% of fiscal 2025 revenue. It added about $0.9 billion in sales that year, more than the roughly $0.7 billion by which total revenue grew. Management expects the HIV treatment market to return to annual growth of 2% to 3%. Prevention sales doubled in the second quarter, topping $1 billion for the first time, and Gilead now expects full-year HIV sales to grow 9% to 10%, up from 8%. Gilead trades at 6.4 times sales, against 3.2 for the S&P 500.

Amgen vs Gilead: Which biotech dividend stock is the better buy, with yields of 2.2% and 2.1%?

Amgen and Gilead Sciences, two of the few big biotech companies that pay dividends, suit different kinds of income investors, according to a comparison by The Motley Fool's Keith Speights. Amgen offers a forward dividend yield above 2.2%, against slightly below 2.1% for Gilead. Gilead has the lower payout ratio, at 43.5% versus 60.9%, and the cheaper valuation: 15.6 times forward earnings against 16.7. Amgen's product sales grew 9% year over year in its latest quarter, against 8% for Gilead. It has 17 drugs on track to be blockbusters this year, versus eight for Gilead, and 29 late-stage programs. Speights favours Amgen for yield and growth, and Gilead for safety and value.

Gilead spends $1.28bn on PepStar's potential Icotyde rival.

Gilead spends $1.28bn on PepStar's potential Icotyde rival. Gilead plans to develop HCXT-2001 both as a monotherapy and in combination with its own IBD hopeful, emvistegrast. Gilead Sciences has inked a billion-dollar deal with Shanghai-based PepStar therapeutics to secure the global rights to an oral IL-23 receptor inhibitor, which the company hopes will rival Johnson & Johnson's recently approved therapy Icotyde (icotrokinra). Through this deal, Gilead will hand over $1.275bn upfront to obtain the rights to PepStar's macrocyclic peptide IL-23R inhibitor pill programme. This includes its lead asset, HCXT-2001, which is currently in Phase I trials. While the IL-23R inhibitor class has thus far made its commercial mark in plaque psoriasis, clinical success is now being seen in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Gilead is prioritising the latter with HCXT-2001, though the company is yet to specify which specific indications it will pursue. Unlike other options on the market, HCXT-2001 has an extended half-life, leading Gilead's CMO, Dietmar Berger to claim that the drug could offer a "potentially differentiated approach" to the company's burgeoning inflammation pipeline - which is primarily focused on IBD, type 2 inflammatory diseases, lupus and B cell-mediated autoimmune diseases. "We see potential for HCXT-2001 alone or in combination, including with emvistegrast, as a daily oral treatment for people living with IBD," Berger added. Emvistegrast is Gilead's in-house developed α4β7 integrin inhibitor, which is currently in mid-stage development for IBD. The drug has already demonstrated its potential, having recently met its primary endpoint in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) during the Phase II SWIFT study (NCT06290934). According to Jefferies analysts, this deal is a good move from Gilead as it allows the company to pursue a promising combination. "Proof of concept data from ABBV-266 [a combination of risankizumab and trosunilimab] shows that a4b7 + IL-23 may offer the best clinical remission in patients with prior advanced treatment," they commented. Meanwhile, they add that preclinical pharmacokinetic studies have pointed toward the early favourability of HCXT-2001 versus Icotyde - pointing to early signs of the drug's differentiated potential. Gilead doubles down on dealmaking. Gilead's deal with PepStar is the latest in a string of deals inked by the California-based pharma, which is currently preparing itself for several key patent expiries across its virology portfolio. To bolster its pipeline and bring new promising assets in, Gilead has inked three acquisitions in 2026. This includes its $7.8bn buyout of CAR-T specialist, Arcellx, as well as its takeovers worth up to $5bn and $2.2bn of antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) developer Tubulis and autoimmune T-cell engager (TCE) therapy-focused biotech Ouro Medicines, respectively. In the same vein, Gilead also recently forged a $1.9bn licensing pact with Vir Biotechnologies centred around next-generation TCEs for solid tumours.
