  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Understand common medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
  • Demonstrate customer service skills and follow directions communicated in a variety of ways.
  • Know infection control and injury prevention theories and strategies.
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Apply basic math skills, including adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing.
  • Demonstrate organizational skills.
Responsibilities
  • Spend the day on the assigned nursing unit.
  • Communicate with nursing before seeing each patient to obtain updated patient status.
  • Transport patients for hospital discharge and assist with vehicle transfers as needed.
  • Round and triage rounding importance based on nursing communication.
  • Boost or reposition patients in bed.
  • Assist with bedside commode transfers or walk patients to the bathroom.
  • Mobilize patients based on their BMAT level.
  • Get patients up for meals and throughout the day.
  • Assist patients to the chair and back to bed as appropriate.
  • Walk patients in the hall as appropriate.
  • Provide feedback to nursing about unidentified fall-precaution needs, skin-integrity issues, line, drain, and airway issues, and patient concerns.
  • For patients with both therapy and mobility-program orders, communicate with occupational and physical therapy staff to determine specific mobility needs.
  • Develop as a patient-mobility resource and mentor floor staff in environmental setup, device use, mobility techniques, and body mechanics to promote safe patient mobility.
  • Assist nursing, as requested, with patients who have in-bed positioning needs.
  • Build a trusting relationship with patients.
  • Provide clear and effective patient communication about the importance of mobility, vertical positioning, fall risks, and out-of-bed activity as appropriate.
  • Increase patient morale and satisfaction through daily encouragement and increased autonomy.
  • Document each session in EPIC.
