Target raises dividend to $1.16, Lowe's to $1.25 as retailers defend payout streaks

Target raised its quarterly dividend to $1.16 from $1.14, whilst Lowe's increased its payout to $1.25 from $1.20. Both retailers reported second-quarter results on 19 August 2026. Target's increase follows a period of flat dividends and comes after a tariff refund boosted quarterly earnings. The company yields 2.8% and paid $518 million in dividends during the quarter. Chief financial officer Jim Lee stated the firm prioritises business investment first, dividends second, and buybacks last. Lowe's generated $3.1 billion in free cash flow against $673 million in dividends. However, the company faces balance sheet challenges, with negative shareholders' equity of $7.44 billion and debt-to-EBITDA of 3.0 times following recent acquisitions. Management aims to reduce leverage to 2.75 times by mid-2027. Lowe's yields 2.4%.

Major US retailers pocket $5B in tariff refunds as Walmart gets $2.9B, Target $994M, but shoppers see little benefit

Major US retailers have received over $5 billion in tariff refunds this week alone, with Walmart getting $2.9 billion, Target $994 million, and Home Depot $730 million. The Trump administration is refunding approximately $166 billion in tariff revenue after the Supreme Court struck down its sweeping tariff policy, having returned $100 billion so far. Despite studies showing consumers bore the brunt of initial tariff costs through higher prices, most companies are reinvesting the refunds rather than passing savings to shoppers. Retail executives indicated in earnings calls they plan to put the money back into their businesses. Consumers have filed class-action lawsuits against companies receiving refunds, but none have concluded. Americans have limited recourse to recover funds if companies don't voluntarily lower prices.

Lowe's CEO warns of cautious consumer spending amid macro and geopolitical uncertainty

Lowe's reported mixed second-quarter results, with revenue falling short of analyst expectations due to pressure on DIY consumer spending. The DIY segment represents 60-65% of Lowe's revenue. CEO Marvin Ellison cited several factors affecting consumer behaviour: customers remain cautious about discretionary spending due to macro and geopolitical uncertainty, plus higher fuel prices above $4 per gallon. Poor weather during Memorial Day and a highly promotional environment in July also impacted results. Despite challenges, Lowe's posted its fifth consecutive quarter of same-store sales growth at 0.2%, below Wall Street expectations. The pro business and online sales performed well, with online contributing 15% year-over-year growth. Lowe's has received $80 million in tariff refunds, with additional refunds expected by year-end. The company is carefully considering how to use these funds whilst avoiding overly promotional strategies.

Lowe's Q2 sales rise 8.3% to $26B, maintains full-year EPS outlook at $12.25

Lowe's reported second-quarter sales of $26 billion, up 8.3% year-over-year, with comparable sales rising 0.2%. The home improvement retailer saw growth in professional customers, online sales, and home services offset weaker discretionary DIY spending. Online sales jumped 15.7%, supported by higher traffic and the company's MyLowe AI tool, which has answered over 25 million customer questions. Customers using the tool convert at three times the rate of non-users. However, inflation, interest rates, and increased promotional competition pressured transactions and margins. Adjusted diluted earnings per share reached $4.40, including an $0.11-per-share benefit from tariff refunds. Lowe's maintained its full-year outlook near the low end of prior guidance, expecting roughly flat comparable sales and adjusted EPS of approximately $12.25. Management anticipates continued residential construction pressure but remains focused on long-term investments.

Lowe's Q2 sales reach $26B with 0.2% comparable growth, updates 2026 outlook

Lowe's reported second quarter 2026 net earnings of $2.4 billion with diluted earnings per share of $4.27, matching the prior year. Total sales reached $26.0 billion, up from $24.0 billion in the second quarter of 2025. Comparable sales increased 0.2%, driven by strong performance in professional services and a 15.7% increase in online sales, offset by DIY market pressures. The company recognised $96 million in pre-tax expenses related to acquisitions of Foundation Building Materials and Artisan Design Group. Excluding these expenses, adjusted diluted EPS increased 1.6% to $4.40. Lowe's updated its full-year 2026 outlook, maintaining total sales guidance at $92.0 billion but lowering comparable sales expectations from up to 2% growth to flat. The company paid $673 million in dividends during the quarter and operated 1,761 stores as of 31 July 2026.
