Requirements
  • Experience operating mini excavators or compact track equipment for underground fire line installations, with a minimum of 5 years of experience.
  • A valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift 50 or more pounds regularly.
  • Basic understanding of excavation safety practices.
  • Ability to work overtime and travel occasionally if required.
  • Experience operating underground utility equipment, including mini track excavators, trenchers, skid steers, and compact equipment.
  • Ability to read and follow site utility plans, blueprints, construction drawings, utility maps, and markings.
  • Knowledge of grading, trench safety, underground utilities, and underground fire protection work.
  • Ability to perform equipment inspections, identify maintenance needs, and assist with minor equipment repairs and preventive maintenance.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and communicate and collaborate with underground fire protection crews.
  • Mechanical aptitude for equipment operation and maintenance.
Responsibilities
  • Operate mini track excavators, trenchers, skid steers, compact equipment, and related underground utility equipment.
  • Perform trenching for underground fire sprinkler mains and service lines.
  • Assist with excavation for underground fire mains, hydrant installations, fire department connection supply lines, valve pits, thrust blocks, and underground tie-ins.
  • Safely load and unload equipment from trailers.
  • Assist crews with installation of ductile iron pipe, C900 polyvinyl chloride pipe, high-density polyethylene piping, underground valves, and fittings.
  • Help maintain proper depth, slope, and alignment of underground piping.
  • Assist with hydrostatic testing and flushing operations.
  • Follow Occupational Safety and Health Administration trenching and excavation safety standards.
  • Ensure trenches are properly protected and safe.
  • Identify and avoid existing underground utilities.
  • Participate in daily job-site safety meetings.
  • Maintain clean and organized job sites.
  • Perform daily equipment inspections.
  • Maintain equipment cleanliness and report maintenance needs.
  • Monitor fuel, fluids, tracks, hoses, and attachments.
  • Assist with minor equipment repairs and preventive maintenance.
  • Operate equipment safely with minimal damage or downtime.
  • Maintain production schedules.
  • Support crew efficiency and teamwork.
  • Minimize utility strikes and rework.
  • Maintain high safety standards at all times.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in underground fire line installation.
  • Experience with utility construction or site work.
  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration 10 or Occupational Safety and Health Administration 30 certification.
  • Commercial driver's license.
  • Knowledge of National Fire Protection Association underground fire service mains.
