Requirements
  • Graduate from an accredited Surgical Technician Program.
  • Certified as a Certified Surgical Technician by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or equivalent is required.
  • American Heart Association cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification is required.
  • Maintain a neat, clean, professional appearance.
  • Demonstrate understanding, patience, and tact when dealing with physicians and fellow workers.
  • Pay attention to detail.
  • Demonstrate excellent hand-eye coordination.
  • Be self-motivated and work in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Work in an air-conditioned environment with a temperature of 65-73 degrees and humidity of 45-55%; when assigned to pediatric cases, work in temperatures of up to 85-90 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Wear hospital-provided scrub attire while on duty.
  • Work with employees at various levels of skill, knowledge, and abilities.
Responsibilities
  • Assist with surgical procedures and related operating-room activities under the direct supervision of the professional nurse.
  • Deliver care according to the Association of Surgical Technologists’ Recommended Standards of Practice in a cost-effective manner without compromising quality of care.
  • Apply sterile and aseptic technique, human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools to facilitate physicians’ invasive, therapeutic, and diagnostic procedures.
  • Demonstrate competency to scrub for minor and major surgical procedures and endoscopic surgical procedures.
  • Participate in departmental quality assessment and improvement activities.
  • Meet hospital continuing education and certification requirements.
  • Participate in student teaching activities.
  • Uphold Patient Care Services philosophy and objectives.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the Association of Surgical Technologists’ Recommended Standards of Practice and the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses’ Age Specific Competency Statements.
  • Demonstrate professional growth and development.
