Comfort-Focused office furniture.

Comfort-Focused office furniture. Humanscale, a leader in human-centered design, introduces the Diffrient Lounge, a chair that reimagines living and working in hybrid environments. Recently awarded the iF Design Award 2026, the design builds on a concept by Niels Diffrient, now reinterpreted by Humanscale Design Studio for today. Positioned as a new benchmark in lounge seating, it blends residential comfort with workplace performance and ergonomic precision. Sculptural yet intuitive, the chair reflects Diffrient's philosophy of function-driven design. It responds naturally to the body, with an adjustable headrest and a backrest that supports the spine's natural curve. A refined recline mechanism and motorized adjustments allow seamless posture shifts, while an integrated worksurface and discreet USB-C ports support modern workflows. Designed for versatility, the Diffrient Lounge fits effortlessly across home and professional settings. Premium materials - including Kvadrat and Dedar textiles, Ultrafabrics leathers, and wood or laminate worksurfaces - enable it to adapt to spaces ranging from living rooms to executive offices and hospitality environments. Humanscale earns two 2026 iF design awards for Diffrient Lounge and eFloat Quattro.

Humanscale earns two 2026 iF design awards for Diffrient Lounge and eFloat Quattro. The internationally recognised honours celebrate Humanscale's continued leadership across innovation, comfort, and sustainability. From a single designer to one of the most decorated design teams in the world, the Humanscale Design Studio has quietly shaped how millions of people work. Now the New York-based studio has earned two 2026 iF DESIGN AWARD wins - recognition for the newly launched Diffrient Lounge and the eFloat Quattro table. The awards spotlight the studio's distinctive approach to industrial design: solving complex ergonomic challenges through simple, intuitive products that require fewer parts, fewer materials, and less effort from the user. An independent jury evaluated more than 11,000 submissions from 68 countries this year. Humanscale's designs stood out for their blend of functionality, environmental responsibility, and design clarity, principles that have guided the studio since its founding in 2002. Today the Humanscale Design Studio brings together industrial designers, engineers, and ergonomics specialists who collaborate from the earliest stages of development. Their philosophy is straightforward: the best design should work with the human body, not ask the user to adapt to it. That approach has helped define modern ergonomic furniture, and continues a legacy shaped by collaboration with legendary designer Niels Diffrient. Diffrient Lounge: completing a 20 year old vision. One of the studio's two award-winning products carries forward the work of Niels Diffrient, widely regarded as a pioneer of human-centered industrial design in America. Best known for redefining ergonomic task seating, Diffrient spent decades studying how the human body interacts with furniture. In his later years, he began exploring a different challenge: how to create a lounge chair that could support the body across a range of relaxed postures - rather than locking the user into a single "correct" sitting position. The Diffrient Lounge brings that idea to life nearly 20 years after the concept first emerged. Developed and refined by the Humanscale Design Studio, the chair adapts naturally to the user through an articulating back and headrest, intuitive adjustments, and a pivoting worksurface designed for laptops and devices. Its sculptural silhouette and refined materials allow it to move comfortably between settings, from offices and collaborative lounges to hospitality environments and residential interiors. The design reflects a broader shift in how people work today. As hybrid work blurs the boundaries between office and home, the Diffrient Lounge reimagines what ergonomic seating can look like in more relaxed, flexible environments. eFloat Quattro: engineering movement into the modern desk. Humanscale's second iF-winning design addresses another central element of the contemporary workplace: the height-adjustable desk. The eFloat Quattro table introduces a four-leg architecture that gives the desk a more architectural presence while maintaining the smooth, nearly silent movement needed for frequent posture changes. By encouraging users to shift naturally between sitting and standing, the desk supports energy, focus, and long-term well-being throughout the workday. The design also reflects Humanscale's long-standing emphasis on sustainability. The desk is 99% recyclable and incorporates non-toxic, PVC-free polyurethane cabling, the result of the design studio's efforts to create a product that is both environmentally responsible and highly durable. A design philosophy built on less. Across both award-winning products, the Humanscale Design Studio continues to pursue a design principle that has defined the company for decades: achieving more with less. Each product is developed through a rigorous design process that evaluates material health, longevity, serviceability, and recyclability at every stage of development. The result is furniture designed not only to improve daily work, but also to remain in use for as long as possible - reducing waste and environmental impact over time. The studio's latest recognition from the iF DESIGN AWARD adds to a long list of international accolades. But more importantly, it underscores Humanscale's ongoing role in shaping the future of workplace design.

Humanscale opens Shanghai flagship store

Humanscale opens Shanghai flagship store. Humanscale opened its flagship retail store in Shanghai at the end of January, marking a significant and important milestone in the company's continued expansion in China and its evolution into a globally recognised, consumer-facing design brand. Located in InCity MEGA, one of Shanghai's most dynamic retail destinations, the new flagship places Humanscale alongside more than 350 international brands in an environment shaped by discovery, accessibility, and experience. The opening represents Humanscale's second flagship retail store in China and underscores the strategic importance of Shanghai within the brand's global growth plans. "This moment represents more than the opening of a store. It reflects Humanscale's broader ambition to become a truly global brand that people recognise, trust, and welcome into their homes," said Heather Fennimore, Co-Founder and President of Humanscale. "China is central to that vision, and Shanghai, known for its design intelligence, pace of innovation, and global outlook, is the ideal city for this next chapter." Spanning nearly 1,300 square feet, the Shanghai flagship store has been strategically designed to showcase Humanscale's award-winning ecosystem of ergonomic solutions, including seating, sit-to-stand desks, monitor arms, and task lighting. The space invites visitors to experience how performance-driven design supports movement, comfort, and long-term wellbeing in both work and home environments. Rather than relying on complex controls or manual adjustments, Humanscale's approach to ergonomics is grounded in decades of research into how people naturally sit, move, and work. Its products are designed to respond automatically to the user, delivering consistent comfort, balance, and support without conscious effort. This philosophy of intuitive ergonomics has defined the brand for decades and continues to guide its product development today, shaping products that adapt seamlessly to work, wherever it takes place. The opening of the Shanghai flagship comes at a time when Chinese consumers are increasingly focused on wellness, health, and quality of everyday living. In fast-paced urban centres such as Shanghai, long working hours, hybrid lifestyles, and greater awareness of physical wellbeing have elevated demand for products that support comfort, movement, and long-term health. Humanscale's retail presence responds directly to this shift, offering consumers access to ergonomic design that integrates seamlessly into modern living. The Shanghai flagship also reflects a broader shift in how Humanscale engages with consumers. Long established as a leader in commercial and office environments, the company is increasingly focused on bringing its design principles directly to individuals through retail experiences that emphasise education, interaction, and trust. By opening a major shopping centre, Humanscale is meeting consumers where they are and embedding ergonomic design into everyday life. "Our Shanghai flagship allows people to experience what ergonomics truly feel like," said Fennimore. "Comfort, movement, and thoughtful design are not luxuries. They are essential to how people live and work today, and this store brings those values directly to Chinese consumers in one of the world's most dynamic cities." As Humanscale opens its Shanghai flagship, the company views the space not simply as a retail destination, but as a foundation for long-term presence and dialogue in the Chinese market, anchored by design, performance, and purpose, and reflecting its continued evolution and confidence in the market's future.

Humanscale eyes designers with new San Francisco showroom

Humanscale eyes designers with new San Francisco showroom. SAN FRANCISCO - Ergonomic office furniture supplier Humanscale has opened a new showroom in San Francisco, expanding its physical presence in a key North American market and aiming to deepen engagement with the local design community. The ground-floor showroom, located at 10 Jackson St., was designed in collaboration with architect Suchi Reddy, founder of the architecture and design firm Reddymade. The space is intended to function as both a retail environment and a working showroom, aligning with Humanscale's broader strategy to present its products in real-world, experiential settings. According to the company, the San Francisco showroom reflects core principles that guide its product development, including simplicity, movement and sustainability. The layout features a series of open yet defined zones that allow visitors to experience seating, sit-stand workstations and accessories in multiple configurations, ranging from enclosed settings to more collaborative layouts. Curved and semi-circular forms are used throughout the space and can be reconfigured to demonstrate flexibility and adaptability. Material and construction decisions were shaped by an emphasis on restraint and reuse. Original concrete flooring was preserved, and existing glass elements were renovated rather than replaced. Modular wall systems were incorporated to create functional office moments while maintaining openness across the showroom. One of those systems was supplied by Modwall, a San Francisco-based startup. Textiles and color are introduced through products from Kvadrat, including the company's Rocket textile, which appears throughout the showroom and in a dedicated area highlighting the relationship between furniture and textile design. The project also continues a broader collaboration between Humanscale and Reddy on showrooms in cities including Chicago, Paris, Sydney and Shanghai. A consistent element of those projects has been the use of female-led design and construction teams. In San Francisco, project management was led by Ashley Hart at Cushman & Wakefield, according to Humanscale. "This way of working reflects our belief that thoughtful design is not only about the finished space, but also about how that space is delivered," the company said in its announcement. Founded in 1983, Humanscale is known for ergonomic workplace products, including the Freedom chair designed by Niels Diffrient. The company said the San Francisco showroom is intended to serve as both a brand statement and a community gathering point shaped by the city's focus on sustainability, innovation and well-being.
