Verizon CEO says SpaceX would need up to $500B and six years to rival its network

Verizon chief executive officer Dan Schulman says SpaceX would need four to six years and $300 billion to $500 billion to build a full Starlink Mobile carrier network in the US. He made the claim on Verizon's third-quarter earnings call on October 26. Schulman said SpaceX would need 65,000 to 80,000 macro cell sites, plenty of spectrum, retail stores, and customer service. "There's no magic wand. There's no secret sauce. There's no shortcut," he said. SpaceX says it aims to become a "major mobile carrier in the US." Fear of the threat has hit telecom stocks; Verizon shares fell 10.14% to $41.65 on October 9, a day after SpaceX announced a spectrum deal.

Verizon CEO open to Starlink deals but rules out network access: "no benefit whatsoever

Verizon chief executive officer Dan Schulman said the carrier is open to working with satellite providers such as Elon Musk's Starlink, but will not let them use its network to compete for mobile customers. Speaking on Verizon's third-quarter earnings call, he said satellite service suits remote areas and could complement wireless offerings, directly or through a joint venture. He ruled out mobile virtual network operator deals: "I see absolutely no benefit whatsoever to extending an MVNO deal to any satellite provider." Schulman estimated a rival buildout by SpaceX would need 65,000 to 80,000 macro sites and cost $300 billion to $500 billion over seven to eight years. "We will punch back hard when that happens," he said. Verizon shares closed down 3.49% at $43.10 despite its strongest third-quarter wireless subscriber growth in five years. Revenue was $34.31 billion, short of the $34.74 billion consensus.
