Requirements
  • A Master of Science degree in Physician Assistant Studies is required.
  • Graduation from a physician assistant program approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant is required.
  • Certification as a physician assistant or acute care nurse practitioner certification is required.
  • Arizona state licensure as a physician assistant is required.
  • A Drug Enforcement Administration license to prescribe Schedule II–V controlled substances is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association is required.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification is required.
  • Current and valid certifications and licenses must be maintained when required for the position.
  • Required company modules and job-specific training must be completed within the specified timeframe.
Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the attending provider by phone or in person to review consultations, plan of care, and patient status updates for hospitalized patients.
  • Coordinate care with interventional cardiology providers and patients.
  • Provide direct patient care by obtaining health histories, performing detailed physical examinations, creating comprehensive patient assessments, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, and prescribing pharmacological agents.
  • Update patient histories and physical examinations in preparation for procedures and obtain informed consent when necessary.
  • Enter and sign pre-procedural orders.
  • Communicate with cath lab and cardiology staff to support timely electrophysiology procedures while considering staffing and patient needs.
  • Complete timely documentation of consultations, progress notes, and services rendered in the electronic medical record.
  • Order referrals and diagnostic testing as necessary.
  • Complete discharge planning and discharge summaries for hospitalized patients.
  • Perform procedures under the supervision of the attending physician within the scope of physician assistant training.
  • Function as a surgical first assist in the cath lab and operating room when assigned.
  • Perform and assist with procedures at the discretion of the supervising physician, including central venous access, injection of local anesthetic, electrocautery, deep and superficial suturing, and other assigned procedures.
  • Assist with electrophysiology procedures, including operation of the fluoroscopy table and electrophysiology stimulator, when assigned.
  • Supervise and perform procedures in the cardiology department within the scope of training and supervising physician discretion when indicated.
  • Serve as the initial contact point for nursing staff, medical staff, pharmacy, and other hospital departments regarding hospitalized patient management.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and competence in cardiac electrophysiology.
  • Consult with colleagues, hospitalists, the supervising physician, specialists, referral providers, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in performance-improvement initiatives supporting practice improvement.
  • Participate in educational opportunities to advance electrophysiology knowledge.
  • Participate in developing policies and procedures.
  • Participate in quality-assurance programs and audit advanced-practice healthcare techniques.
  • Follow regulatory and organizational standards, patient-care and safety requirements, and hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Comply with applicable state and federal regulations, statutes, and company policies.
  • Report safety-related incidents through the Midas/RDE tool and attend required safety training.
  • Perform work safely, monitor the work environment for potential safety issues, and ensure others work safely.
Desired Qualifications
  • Two years of experience in inpatient cardiology or electrophysiology.
  • Understanding of computers and competence using computers and basic software programs.
