About the job

Requirements
  • A PhD or equivalent research experience in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field; exceptional candidates with strong research contributions may qualify without a formal degree.
  • Publication in top-tier artificial intelligence or machine learning conferences such as NeurIPS, ICML, or ICLR, or equivalent industry experience at a corporate AI research lab such as Microsoft, Google, Nvidia, or Toyota Research Institute.
  • Expertise in training machine learning models, including deep learning, reinforcement learning, or genetic algorithms.
  • Passion for accelerating scientific discovery through artificial intelligence and willingness to explore uncharted directions with minimal supervision.
Responsibilities
  • Work directly with the founder to develop autonomous research systems that ideate, experiment, and improve customer models.
  • Collaborate with the engineering team to build and deploy production-ready research systems.
  • Reinforcement learning post-train and fine-tune reasoning models to automate components of the machine learning research process.
  • Stay current with the latest developments in artificial intelligence research and automation.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • General Catalyst led Autoscience's March 18, 2026 seed round, validating investor demand.
  • Mira targets Fortune 500 workflows in finance, manufacturing, and fraud detection.
  • The company says Carl already generated its first full-length peer-reviewed paper.

What critics are saying

  • ICLR organizers were not informed, so the peer-review claim carries lasting credibility damage.
  • Lila Sciences raised $550 million, overwhelming Autoscience's $14 million war chest.
  • If Mira misses enterprise deployment, Autoscience becomes a publicity lab without durable revenue.

What makes Autoscience unique

  • Carl and Mira target end-to-end machine-learning research, not generic copilots.
  • Autoscience won an ICLR 2025 workshop acceptance and a Kaggle silver medal.
  • Eliot Cowan combines X and MIT credibility with applied research execution.
