About the Job

Requirements

  • A Ph.D. degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Material Science, or a related field is required.
  • Experience with cleanroom and nanofabrication processes, including hands-on experience and knowledge of cleanroom metrology for device performance and yield characterization, is required.
  • Experience in at least one of the following areas is required: solid-state quantum computing platforms, including superconducting qubits, spin qubits, semiconductor nanowire or topological qubits, rare-earth qubits, or nanophotonics; microwave circuit design and simulation, including electromagnetic solvers or network analysis; or complex-structure device fabrication, including CMOS multilayer devices, flip-chip devices, microwave airbridges, or radio-frequency circuit devices.
  • A relevant publication record and the ability to present scientific results proficiently in writing and verbally are required.
  • The ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment is required.
  • The ability to mentor and direct students’ work is required.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally to collaborators’ sites and conferences is required.
  • Less than three years of paid postdoctoral experience is required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform electromagnetic simulation of qubit circuits with novel designs to achieve high-coherence qubits.
  • Develop cleanroom metrology for superconducting qubit devices, especially CMOS in-line metrology, in the laboratory and in collaboration with industrial partners.
  • Develop and optimize fabrication processes to improve device materials and characterize superconducting qubit device performance.
  • Fabricate the multiqubit, multilayer quantum processor developed at Berkeley Lab.
  • Present and publish experimental results in internal and external meetings and journals.
  • Support and lead collaboration projects with quantum computing industrial partners.
  • Mentor graduate students.
  • Support or lead writing, including program reports, grants, and papers.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in superconducting qubit design, fabrication, and measurement, especially surface participation simulation and material loss tangent.
  • Familiarity with material-device causality, including connecting film microstructure and surface chemistry to device physics and performance.
  • Experience with surface treatment and surface metrology or measurement.

About the Company

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

Fundamental science enabling energy and environment

Berkeley Lab is a national research facility that conducts unclassified basic science across many fields, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and managed by the University of California. Its work aims to address energy and environmental challenges by using interdisciplinary teams and building advanced tools for scientific discovery. Researchers study biosciences, computing sciences, Earth and environmental sciences, energy sciences and technologies, and physical sciences. The lab hosts about 4,200 scientists, engineers, staff, and students on a 200-acre site near UC Berkeley, and it has earned many prestigious honors, including Nobel Prizes and national academy memberships. Its goal is to generate foundational science that leads to practical, transformational solutions for energy and environmental issues while training the next generation of scientists and engineers.
