About the job

Requirements
  • Strong background in AI safety is especially desired, with prior experience or familiarity in at least one of compute governance, policy (including AI policy), or AI safety research and approaches.
  • For compute governance, technical knowledge of AI hardware or chip manufacturing and related governance proposals is relevant.
  • For policy, relevant experience may include writing legislation or white papers, engaging with policymakers, or conducting research in AI policy and governance.
  • For an AI safety generalist, relevant experience includes producing AI safety research and understanding empirical, theoretical, and conceptual approaches, or demonstrating the ability to think clearly and carefully about AI safety.
  • Ability to communicate internally, collaborate with the team, attend several weekly meetings, and proactively report project status, delays, and information needs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with external stakeholders across technical expertise levels, including policymakers, through concise, clear writing and presentations.
  • Alignment with MIRI's values, goals, and the Technical Governance Team's research directions; enthusiasm for its mission to reduce existential risks from AI.
Responsibilities
  • Research and design technical aspects of regulations and policy intended to support safe AI.
  • Contribute research inputs to regulations and requests for comments by policy bodies.
  • Conduct technical research to improve international coordination and assess limitations of current AI safety proposals and policies.
  • Communicate with and consult for policymakers and governance organizations.
  • Research, write for internal and external audiences, and engage with collaborators and policymakers.
  • Threat-model how AI systems could cause large-scale harm and identify possible preventive actions.
  • Respond to government agency requests for comment.
  • Research risk-management practices in other industries and apply them to AI.
  • Design and implement evaluations of AI models, including demonstrating failure modes relevant to current policy.
  • Prepare and present informative briefings to policymakers on topics such as AI evaluations.
  • Analyze government or AI developer AI policy documents and write reports on their limitations.
  • Design AI policies and standards that address limitations of current approaches.
  • Focus research on solutions that scale to smarter-than-human intelligence and identify new challenges that may emerge at that stage.
Desired Qualifications
  • Research or engineering focused on frontier AI models or the AI technology stack is a bonus; the role may include creating or running model evaluations, benchmarking AI hardware, and conducting scaling-law experiments.
  • Agency, conscientiousness, comfort learning on the job and working on underspecified tasks, and generative thinking are especially valued.

About the company

Machine Intelligence Research Institute

View

MIRI studies artificial intelligence with a focus on safety and alignment, researching long-term challenges as AI becomes more capable. It conducts technical research and philosophical analysis to develop theories, frameworks, and safety concepts rather than building consumer products. It emphasizes foundational, long-term safety theory rather than short-term applications and commercial products. Its goal is to help humanity prepare for coexistence with highly capable AI by clarifying alignment and guiding how future AI systems should be designed and governed.

What believers are saying

  • On June 8, 2026, MIRI disclosed $10 million from Dustin Moskovitz.
  • MIRI also received $2.9 million from an anonymous donor in 2026.
  • These gifts roughly tripled reserves, supporting hiring and multi-year execution.

What critics are saying

  • MIRI’s 2024 pivot admits alignment research failed to keep pace with frontier AI.
  • If policymakers ignore MIRI’s ban agenda, its thesis loses relevance quickly.
  • An AI deployment race before 2027 makes MIRI’s mission an existential warning, not a business.

What makes Machine Intelligence Research Institute unique

  • MIRI has 20-plus years of AI existential-risk advocacy and alignment research.
  • Since 2024, MIRI pivoted toward technical governance and policy verification research.
  • Its 2026 agenda centers on international AI agreements, chip tracking, and enforcement mechanisms.

If We Don’T End Factory Farming Soon, It Might Be Here Forever.

In one version of the future, we will look back in horror at how we raised animals for food and are ... [+] grateful for our generation who turned the tide. But in another, we will be eating and exploiting animals just like we do today. And potentially for millions of years to come. getty. Do you know what the most popular book is? No, it’s not Harry Potter. But it does talk about spells. It’s the Bible, and it has been for centuries. In the past 50 years alone, the Bible has sold over 3.9 billion copies. And the second best-selling book? The Quran, at 800 million copies

Dumb AI is a bigger risk than strong AI

AI is very promising, but we need to make it simple to ensure it's truly smart every step of the way to avoid real risk and even catastrophe.
