Responsibilities
  • Submit clinical documentation to health insurance to obtain approval for planned procedures, hospital admissions, or continued stays.
  • Review patient charts to ensure the level of care matches the patient's condition and meets regulatory and insurance standards.
  • Ensure medical documentation adheres to HIPAA and insurance regulations.
  • Act as a central point of contact between clinical staff, billing departments, and third-party payers.
  • Attend interdisciplinary treatment team meetings to gather clinical justifications, track therapy progress, and align care plans with approved insurance days.
  • Monitor patient length of stay against approved insurance timelines to reduce financial penalties.
  • Advise the clinical team about documentation missing or needed to justify continued care to the insurance company.
  • Review insurance denial letters to identify the contractual or clinical reason the level of care was rejected.
  • Schedule and prepare facility psychiatrists for immediate telephonic reviews with insurance medical directors.
  • Draft and submit urgent clinical appeal packets within state-mandated 24- to 72-hour windows for active patients.
  • Perform other duties as required by the organization.
