Requirements
  • An Associate degree and at least three years of clinical laboratory experience, or a Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Science with certification required within one year of hire, or a Bachelor of Science degree in a laboratory-related science with nationally recognized certification before hire.
  • A nationally recognized certification is required; American Society for Clinical Pathology certification is preferred.
  • Ability to work independently, adhere to deadlines, and manage changing work volumes.
  • Basic knowledge of computer software systems.
  • Ability to work with exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues using universal precautions and bloodborne-pathogen standards.
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, talk, hear calls and instructions, lift or exert force up to 30 pounds, distinguish colors, maintain close vision, and adjust focus.
Responsibilities
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative clinical laboratory testing and quality control independently across microbiology, chemistry, blood bank, hematology, phlebotomy, and urinalysis.
  • Follow hospital policies, procedures, professional ethics, infection-control requirements, safety goals, patient-identification procedures, and age-specific care standards.
  • Respond appropriately to Code Blue and Rapid Response events.
  • Participate in quality and performance improvement initiatives and use data to measure performance and improve outcomes.
  • Document patient care, specimen information, test results, incidents, quality-control failures, and equipment failures accurately in the electronic medical record, laboratory information system, logs, and required forms.
  • Perform venipunctures and capillary punctures; verify patient identities, specimen requirements, collection times, special transfusion-service banding, and specimen logs.
  • Ensure specimen integrity and identification, including correct labeling, acceptance, aliquoting, specimen selection, and special processing.
  • Produce, review, evaluate, verify, and report accurate laboratory test results, including panic values and discrepancies.
  • Perform routine, special, and complex testing, quality control, daily maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, and error resolution on laboratory analyzers and equipment.
  • Assess instrument errors, unusual patient results, and unacceptable quality-control results; select appropriate testing options or backup methods and notify laboratory leadership or pathology personnel when required.
  • Maintain reagents, testing materials, workstations, supplies, and equipment hot-line communications as needed.
  • Participate in analyzer orientation and continuing in-service training, competency programs, and proficiency-testing programs.
  • Investigate and resolve missing specimens, unfinished worklists, testing discrepancies, and laboratory occurrences.
  • Prioritize STAT, timed, critical, and routine testing and coordinate workflow so results are completed within required time limits.
  • Maintain personal time records and adjust staffing assignments or schedules during emergency laboratory staffing situations.
  • Assist with orienting and training new employees and evaluating assigned associates' competency.
  • Attend or participate in the laboratory in-service education program, including required annual education hours.
Desired Qualifications
  • Laboratory computer knowledge and skills are preferred.
  • Experience performing laboratory duties is preferred but not required.
