About the Job

Requirements

  • A Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering is strongly preferred; a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry or another closely related engineering or scientific discipline may be considered with relevant process or manufacturing experience. A master's degree is preferred but not required.
  • Three or more years of relevant engineering experience is preferred; candidates with less experience and strong technical depth may be considered. A master's-level or higher education may substitute for a portion of the experience requirement.
  • Experience in aerospace/defense, energetics, explosives, pyrotechnics, specialty chemical manufacturing, or another highly regulated process-manufacturing environment is preferred. Direct ordnance experience is preferred but not required when the candidate has transferable process engineering or Process Safety Management experience.
  • Working knowledge of organic and inorganic synthesis.
  • Strong understanding of oxidation-reduction reactions and fundamental chemical-process principles.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Process Safety Management and process-safety practices; experience with Process Hazard Analyses, Management of Change, Pre-Startup Safety Reviews, Process Safety Management audits, process-safety documentation, and corrective-action implementation is strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, Failure Analysis, Root Cause Analysis, statistical process control, or similar problem-solving tools is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; strong Excel capability is preferred. Working knowledge of Access, Visio, and Project is a plus.
  • Ability to communicate technical knowledge clearly in verbal and written form.
  • Interpersonal skills to interact effectively with operators, staff, customers, and suppliers; ability to influence without formal authority and respectfully challenge existing processes or technical assumptions.
  • Ability to build relationships across internal disciplines, promote effective collaboration, work hands-on in production, and develop credibility with experienced operators.
  • Working knowledge of statistical software such as Minitab, JMP, or comparable tools. Lean or Six Sigma knowledge is preferred, with practical application valued over certification alone.
  • Working knowledge of programmable logic controller-controlled manufacturing equipment is a plus.
  • Only U.S. citizens are eligible for employment due to U.S. Government contract requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support Process Safety Management activities for new and existing processes, including Process Hazard Analyses, Management of Change, Pre-Startup Safety Reviews, audits, technical documentation, and corrective-action implementation to support personnel safety, environmental compliance, and safe operation.
  • Maintain and improve energetic material processes to address safety concerns and enhance productivity, quality, reliability, and material performance.
  • Provide required technical inputs for proposals.
  • Support production manufacturing, including disposition of non-conforming material, powder qualification testing for production release, assessment of raw, precursor, and finished materials, and engagement with the Integrated Product Team to resolve manufacturing-process and product-testing issues involving energetic materials.
  • Develop toward independent technical ownership of assigned energetic material process lines and associated equipment; work alongside production operators to support reliable supply and provide technical guidance in resolving issues affecting safety, scrap, productivity, quality, equipment reliability, and product performance.
  • Create, update, and maintain manufacturing instructions, operating procedures, process specifications, engineering reports, process-safety documentation, and other controlled documents.
  • Apply statistical analysis and statistical process control to key process variables, including process capability, trend analysis, population and sample comparisons, and relationships among variables to support process optimization and data-driven decisions.
  • Lead structured problem-solving for production anomalies, nonconforming lots, equipment issues, testing, customer complaints, and field returns using Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, Failure Analysis, Root Cause Analysis, and other appropriate methods.
  • Support Purchasing in ensuring raw-material quality, investigating supplier-related issues, and identifying alternative raw-material sources.
  • Research manufacturing technologies to replace aging processes or equipment, improve capability, and support future business needs.
  • Support engineering projects involving new equipment implementation, process changes, qualification activities, and conversion of laboratory-scale synthesis to full-scale manufacturing.
  • Support scale-up, ramp-up, and introduction of new products and process families as business needs evolve.

Desired Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of programmable logic controller-controlled manufacturing equipment.
  • Strong Excel capability.
  • Working knowledge of Access, Visio, and Project.
  • Experience with Process Hazard Analyses, Management of Change, Pre-Startup Safety Reviews, Process Safety Management audits, process-safety documentation, and corrective-action implementation.
  • Working knowledge of Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, Failure Analysis, Root Cause Analysis, statistical process control, or similar problem-solving tools.
  • Lean or Six Sigma knowledge and practical application.
