US trade talks raise concerns in Canada over AI, tech rules.

US trade talks raise concerns in Canada over AI, tech rules. August 21, 2026 The US Trade Representative's mention of "digital trade alignment" as part of an agreement with Prime Minister Mark Carney's government is fueling concerns about Canada's ability to set its own policy for technology companies. The two countries appear to be on the cusp of a deal to reduce tariffs and address trade irritants. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said in a social media post that it would include "comprehensive market access for all American goods, economic security commitments, digital trade alignment, and many important provisions." Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government introduced a number of policies aimed at regulating global tech giants operating in Canada, which led to frictions with both the Biden and Trump administrations. While Carney has diverged with his predecessor on some of those policies, his government's artificial intelligence plan vows to build up domestic digital infrastructure to reduce reliance on foreign cloud providers. Investor Jim Balsillie, the former co-chief executive officer of BlackBerry Ltd. and current chair of the Council of Canadian Innovators, said trade agreements are no longer just about the free flow of goods, but rather are becoming "instruments of regulatory remote control." "What is the alignment that's covered?" Balsillie said in an interview about Greer's characterization of the deal. "Is it liability for bad behavior? Is it copyright for how these algorithms ingest models? Is it the ability to do privacy or procurement or sovereign compute? There are many, many questions that go into governing a sovereign, prosperous country. And the devil's going to be in the details." Balsillie said Canada opened the door to US meddling in domestic policy in 2018 when it signed the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which included digital trade rules that mandated cross-border data flows and restricted data localization, or requiring firms to store data locally. Earlier this year, the USTR complained about some of Canada's digital policies in an annual report on trade barriers, including the Online Streaming Act, which required global entertainment platforms such as Netflix Inc. to make financial contributions toward Canadian content. The report also criticized the Online News Act, which attempted to force major social media and search companies to pay publishers for carrying links to news stories. Meta Platforms Inc. balked, and now Facebook users in Canada aren't able to post links to articles from established news providers, including Bloomberg News. The USTR has also flagged Canada's initiative to create sovereign cloud-computing infrastructure, meant to ensure that advanced computing power and sensitive data remain under Canadian legal control. The Carney government has already taken steps to alleviate some of the Trump administration's digital policy concerns, including dropping a digital services tax and replacing a requirement for streamers to contribute 15% of their revenues to Canadian content. Vass Bednar, managing director of the Canadian SHIELD Institute think tank, said the term "alignment" raises concerns about whether Canada will walk back any of its commitments on digital sovereignty, such as ensuring Canadians' data is governed domestically. "One of the elements we are worried about, or I'm worried about, is if Canada's going to also step back from these initial commitments we've made, these initial investments in our own sovereignty and resilience," Bednar said. Will enhanced AtHoc-Microsoft collaboration transform BlackBerry's (TSX: BB) secure software story?

Will enhanced AtHoc-Microsoft collaboration transform BlackBerry's (TSX: BB) secure software story? Table of Contents BlackBerry enhances AtHoc integration. BlackBerry has fortified its BlackBerry AtHoc critical event response platform by amplifying its integrations with Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Entra ID, thereby embedding vital emergency communications within tools that employees routinely utilize. This strategic initiative underscores BlackBerry's determination to embed secure communications and incident response functionalities more deeply within everyday enterprise workflows, potentially fortifying its presence in high-stakes security environments. An exploration of how this enhanced AtHoc-Microsoft integration could reshape BlackBerry's investment narrative regarding secure software is warranted. BlackBerry investment narrative recap. Investing in BlackBerry necessitates a belief in its capacity to transform its blend of safety-critical software, secure communications, and sustainable revenue streams into consistently growing profits, even amid a fluctuating stock price and elevated earnings multiples. The integration of AtHoc with Microsoft Teams and Entra ID serves as a catalyst for the immediate adoption of secure communications; however, it does not mitigate the core risks associated with potential execution errors or sluggish demand in primary government and enterprise markets, which may exert downward pressure on margins and market sentiment. Among the most notable recent developments is the Q1 FY2027 financial report: BlackBerry announced revenues of $152.9 million and net earnings of $8.5 million, both exceeding those of the prior year. The company reaffirmed its fiscal 2027 revenue guidance, projecting between $584 million and $611 million. Coupled with ongoing share buyback programs, this backdrop of earnings and capital returns shapes how investors may evaluate the implications of deeper Microsoft integrations against current valuation expectations. Nonetheless, amidst this progress, investors must remain cognizant that any reduction in government security budgets or elongated procurement processes could... BlackBerry's forward-looking narrative anticipates revenues of $762.3 million and earnings of $139.7 million by 2029. This projection necessitates an annual revenue growth rate of 9.5% and an earnings increase of approximately $80 million, rising from the current $59.8 million. Uncover how BlackBerry's forecasts yield a CA$11.36 fair value, representing a 4% downside from the present stock price. Exploring other perspectives. TSX:BB 1-Year Stock Price Chart Some analysts, among the most conservative, predict revenues of around $781.5 million and earnings of $140.2 million by 2029. Despite these forecasts, they caution that government security spending and procurement uncertainties may lead to weaker stock performance, demonstrating the variability in analyst perspectives and underscoring the importance of analyzing multiple outcomes in light of the recent AtHoc developments.
