How Secure Vehicle Transfer and biometrics combat auto theft.

How Secure Vehicle Transfer and biometrics combat auto theft. · Tuesday, August 18, 2026 Auto transport fraud is a growing concern, but Central Dispatch is tackling it head-on with new biometric security measures. Lainey Sibble, AVP at Cox Automotive, reveals how their platform is using advanced identity verification and a new Secure Vehicle Transfer process to safeguard vehicles during pickup and transit. Learn about the multi-layered approach to protect against bad actors, including real-time tracking and geo-fencing, while maintaining an efficient process for carriers and shippers. Central Dispatch, the auto transportation marketplace owned by Cox Automotive, is extending biometric identity verification beyond platform access to the physical moment a carrier takes possession of a vehicle - a step the company calls Secure Vehicle Transfer. The move targets what the company describes as a persistently manual and vulnerable stage of the auto logistics chain that bad actors have increasingly sought to exploit. The platform listed more than 20 million vehicles last year, making it the largest auto transportation marketplace in the country. Despite broad digitization elsewhere in the transport workflow, the vehicle release process has continued to rely on paper documents, phone calls, and inconsistent provider-specific procedures, leaving a gap that fraudsters have identified and targeted. Under the new system, a shipper - whether a dealer, broker, or auction - authorizes a specific carrier to pick up a vehicle. That carrier receives a digital credential inside the same mobile app already used for vehicle inspections and electronic bills of lading. The credential is non-transferable, meaning it cannot be screenshot or forwarded, and it is revocable if the shipper reassigns the load. Critically, it is geofenced: the credential only becomes accessible once the carrier is within a defined radius of the pickup location, at which point the releasing location scans it to confirm authorization. "This is really about establishing a new standard for vehicle release that hasn't existed previously. The technology is great. I love the technology. But that is not what's going to make it successful alone. It's going to hinge on everyone doing their part and that behavior change so that we make sure the vehicle ends up in the right hands," said Lainey Sibble. The entire pickup verification process is designed to take approximately 90 seconds. The Secure Vehicle Transfer feature is the second phase of a broader security initiative; the first phase, biometric identity verification for platform access, was already rolled out this year. Central Dispatch has also added a carrier scorecard that surfaces key information about a carrier before a shipper engages with them, and a carrier mobile app with mandatory real-time tracking that cannot be disabled from pickup through delivery. On the market outlook, the Central Dispatch representative said platform volumes are at an all-time high, driven in part by dealers and commercial shippers expanding the geographic range from which they source and sell vehicles. Carrier-side pressures - rising insurance costs, fuel prices, and additional regulation - remain a challenge, but new carriers continue to enter the marketplace. Central Dispatch also offers an AI-driven pricing tool, launched roughly a year ago, that returns a predicted price, a price range, and an estimated dispatch time for any given move based on origin, destination, and vehicle specifics. Lainey Sibble acknowledged that no single technology will solve vehicle theft in transit, pointing to the need for industry-wide behavior change alongside the new tools. "We're committed to leading the way on this," Sibble said. "Our ask is really just for partnership across the board so that together we can ensure that ongoing safe and secure transportation of vehicles." * Central Dispatch listed over 20 million vehicles on its platform last year and is now deploying geofenced, non-transferable digital credentials to secure the physical vehicle release process at pickup. * The Secure Vehicle Transfer system works inside an existing carrier mobile app, takes about 90 seconds to complete, and follows an earlier rollout of biometric identity verification for platform access. * Platform volumes are at an all-time high, driven by expanding dealer sourcing geography, though carriers continue to face pressure from rising insurance, fuel, and regulatory costs. Cox Automotive launches Secure Vehicle Transfer with digital credentials to verify carrier identity at pickup

Cox Automotive has launched Secure Vehicle Transfer, a digital credentialing system designed to verify vehicle handoffs in the transport industry. The solution debuts through Central Dispatch, the company's automotive logistics marketplace. The system replaces manual, paper-based processes with dynamic digital credentials that verify the authorised carrier before vehicle pickup. Each credential is unique to a specific vehicle identification number, carrier, and location, and cannot be copied or forwarded. The credential can be scanned when the driver is within five miles of the pickup location, creating a documented handoff record. The process is designed to take approximately 90 seconds. Central Dispatch previously implemented biometric identity verification and plans to extend this to vehicle release points. The solution is launching as a pilot with select dealerships and carriers before broader availability across Central Dispatch's marketplace.

Cox Automotive: US new-vehicle sales pace to hit 16.7M in July despite economic uncertainty

Cox Automotive forecasts US new-vehicle sales will reach a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 16.7 million in July 2026, up from June's 16.5 million pace. This represents the strongest sales rate year-to-date for 2026, with monthly volume expected to increase 1.2%. The forecast suggests buyers are largely unaffected by economic headwinds, including high fuel prices and weak consumer confidence. According to Charlie Chesbrough, senior economist at Cox Automotive, the market is being driven by more affluent buyers who may be less impacted by inflationary pressures. Pent-up demand and record stock market gains are cited as key drivers, contrasting with last summer's surge which was fuelled by the impending elimination of electric vehicle subsidies.
