About the company

Micron Technology designs and manufactures memory and storage chips, mainly DRAM and NAND flash, used in data centers, PCs, phones, cars and industrial equipment. It is one of only three companies that make HBM, the stacked high-bandwidth memory placed beside processors in AI servers, and it is the largest memory chipmaker based in the United States. Unlike chip designers that outsource production, Micron runs its own fabs and assembly sites in the United States and across Asia. It earns money by selling chips, memory modules and solid-state drives to cloud providers, device makers and distributors. Micron was founded in 1978 and is headquartered in Boise, Idaho.

What believers are saying

  • Demand is surging: in September 2026, Micron reported fiscal 2026 revenue of $133.19 billion, up from $37.38 billion.
  • Boise is hiring: in August 2026, Micron planned about 3,500 direct jobs at two Idaho fabs opening from 2027.
  • Sales are locked in early: by October 2026, most of Micron's 2027 HBM supply was contracted at higher prices.

What critics are saying

  • Revenue is concentrated: about half of Micron's sales came from its top ten customers in each of three years.
  • Departing engineers face scrutiny: in September 2026, Micron sued rival YMTC for hiring away at least 20 engineers.
  • Boise is feeling the strain: an August 2026 report found the $50 billion Idaho buildout straining local infrastructure.

What makes Micron Technology unique

  • AI memory is a three-player club: only Micron, SK hynix and Samsung make HBM, the stacked memory inside AI servers.
  • It owns its factories: Micron makes chips in Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, the U.S., Malaysia, China and India.
  • Data centers drive the business: its two data center units made $34.28 billion of quarterly revenue reported September 2026.

November is the best month for stocks (1.9% average gain): three buys are Nvidia, Micron and Alphabet

November has historically been the best month for the S&P 500, averaging a 1.9% gain, according to Motley Fool research. April and December each average 1.4%. Election cycles fall in half of those years, so the effect holds regardless. Columnist Keithen Drury picks three stocks to buy: Nvidia, Micron Technology, and Alphabet. Nvidia grew revenue 106% in the second quarter, yet trades at 27 times earnings and 13.4 times next year's earnings. Micron makes memory chips in short supply and trades at 5.3 times this year's earnings. Alphabet fell more than 10% after earnings on negative cash flow. Drury says Google Cloud's 103% third-quarter growth justifies the spending.

Marvell's $115B Lumentum deal may signal AI peak, leaving Micron most exposed

Marvell Technology agreed on Monday to buy optical-parts maker Lumentum in an all-stock deal valued at $115 billion. Lumentum shares fell 12% and Marvell's fell 5%. Marvell will pay 4.5 of its shares for each Lumentum share, a 24% premium to Lumentum's price on October 28. Marvell's stock has since dropped about 26%, so the offer is now worth about $835 a share, below Lumentum's Friday close. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2028. Citrini Research's Jukan reads the sale as a sign that Lumentum's management expects the AI boom to fade within two to three years. If so, Micron has the most to lose: analysts expect its earnings to more than double this fiscal year, and it trades at about 5x forward earnings.

Dot-com lessons: why Micron and Nvidia stay off my list as CAPE hits 41

A Motley Fool columnist who lived through the dot-com bubble says its lessons are keeping him out of Micron and Nvidia. The cyclically adjusted price-to-earnings (CAPE) ratio is 41, a level only the dot-com boom has topped in US stock market history. Micron, a memory chip maker, reported 379% annual revenue growth and net income of nearly $37.7 billion, against $3.2 billion a year earlier. Memory is a commodity, however, and profits can collapse once supply catches up with demand. Its stock took 24 years to regain its 2000 high. Nvidia posted 106% revenue growth and net income of $59.7 billion. The writer likens it to Cisco, which financed customers that later went bankrupt, causing a $2.25 billion write-down in 2001. He advises current Nvidia holders to keep their shares.

Micron falls 5% to $884.74 as Altman says PC memory belongs in data centres

OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman says scarce memory chips belong in data centers, not personal computers. On the Cheeky Pint podcast, published October 29, 2026, he told Stripe co-founder John Collison that personal devices use DRAM about 5% of the time. Micron Technology fell 5.30% on October 30 to close at $884.74, valuing it at about $1.00 trillion. The drop came during a broad pullback in large technology stocks. Altman offered an opinion, not a product plan, contract, or timeline. PC demand is already soft: Microsoft reported a 22% drop in Windows OEM and Devices revenue, and Intel's finance chief expects the slowdown to last through at least the first half of next year. Micron's cloud and data center segments earned more than its mobile and client unit last quarter.
