Eversource and Dartmouth Engineering selected for U.S. Department of Energy SPARK Award to expand grid capacity and deliver customer benefits through grid-enhancing technology.

Eversource and Dartmouth Engineering selected for U.S. Department of Energy SPARK Award to expand grid capacity and deliver customer benefits through grid-enhancing technology. Selection for award negotiations marks important step forward for initiative that will help increase transmission capacity, improve reliability and reduce customer costs by maximizing existing infrastructure. MANCHESTER, N.H., Sept. 29, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) - Eversource and Dartmouth Engineering have been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Electricity (OE) under its Speed to Power (SPARK) program for an innovative initiative designed to improve reliability and keep costs as low as possible for customers. Referred to as the Dynamic Rating Enhancement Advancements and Modernization (DREAM) initiative, the collaboration between Eversource and Dartmouth Engineering will leverage grid-enhancing technologies to increase the capacity of the existing electric grid, enhance system resiliency, and help lower costs for customers. As developed by Eversource and Professor Junbo Zhao's team at Dartmouth, the DREAM initiative combines leading-edge research with utility expertise to advance practical solutions for the electric grid. By deploying dynamic line rating (DLR) technology across approximately 4,000 miles of Eversource's transmission network in Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire, the initiative will provide operators with enhanced real-time visibility into system conditions and enable more efficient use of existing infrastructure. It will also leverage thermal field sensing to provide on-the-ground measurements of actual conditions, advanced weather forecasting, digital analytical models and operational integration that supports the decision-making process for remote system operators - ultimately providing more real-time data that reflects actual operating conditions in order to maximize use of the existing transmission system. Inside Eversource's System Operations Center "We greatly appreciate the Department of Energy's investment in innovative solutions that can strengthen the New England electric grid and deliver significant reliability and affordability benefits to our customers," said Bill Quinlan, President of Transmission at Eversource. "As demand for electricity continues to grow, the DREAM initiative will help us maximize the capability of our existing transmission system - which importantly will also help keep costs as low as possible for customers. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with DOE and Dartmouth Engineering to demonstrate how advanced, state-of-the-art grid technologies can help meet the region's evolving energy needs with an ever-present focus on affordability for our customers." "Existing transmission lines can often carry more electricity than conventional ratings allow, but operators need reliable information about when that capacity is available and how to use it safely," said Junbo Zhao, Todd M. Cook and Elizabeth Donohoe Cook Associate Professor of Engineering at Dartmouth. "DREAM brings together sensing, forecasting and digital twin analytics to turn that opportunity into practical tools for grid operations. Our partnership with Eversource offers an opportunity to move research into practice across an entire transmission network, helping deliver a more reliable and affordable electric grid for communities throughout New England." "New England's geography, climate, and growing energy demand make reliable power delivery especially challenging. By pairing Dartmouth's advanced modeling with Eversource's operational knowledge, we can get more out of existing transmission lines and improve energy security for our region. This is a perfect example of how innovation moves from our labs to real-world impact," said Douglas Van Citters, Dean and Professor, Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth. By maximizing the capability of its existing transmission system, Eversource anticipates that - under specific conditions - the project could unlock additional transfer capability that may mitigate or delay the need to construct certain new transmission facilities. Such an approach is estimated to cost significantly less than what would be required to build equivalent new transmission infrastructure while also reducing congestion costs on constrained transmission corridors and creating additional value for customers. The partnership will continue as Eversource and Dartmouth Engineering will work with DOE through the award negotiation process to further develop and demonstrate how dynamic line rating technology can increase transmission capacity, strengthen reliability and support evolving energy demands across the region with an emphasis on affordability for customers. Pending successful negotiations and execution of a final award agreement, the award could represent approximately $47.7 million in funding for the initiative, which would be expected to begin in 2027. Eversource's DREAM initiative was one of 31 projects selected across 26 states. GOP bets on energy policy to power November turnout.

GOP bets on energy policy to power November turnout. Republicans are betting that policies promoting more energy production and lower energy prices can help turn out their voters in November, even as Democrats blame President Donald Trump's war with Iran for rising fuel costs. The debate has particular resonance in New Hampshire, where Republicans argue that expanding natural gas pipeline capacity is essential to lowering the region's high utility bills. At Monday's 2026 New Hampshire Energy Summit, Parker Littlehale, Eversource's wholesale power supply manager, pointed to New England's limited pipeline capacity and reliance on more expensive imported liquefied natural gas, or LNG. "We don't have enough natural gas pipelines to get enough gas here to heat the homes and businesses and run the power plants," Littlehale said. "The region relies on global LNG to balance demand and supply and unlike domestic natural gas prices, global LNG prices are much higher." While Democrats have opposed expanding fossil-fuel infrastructure, Republicans like NH-01 candidate Anthony DiLorenzo have embraced an "all of the above" energy policy to save residents money and promote economic investment in the state. "If we want lower energy costs, we need pipelines," DiLorenzo said. The same message dominated energy discussions at the Republican Midterm Convention earlier this month in Dallas, where speakers promoted expanded production and attacked Democrats' climate policies. "Our predecessors killed the American Dream with trillions of dollars in waste and green energy scams, the greatest scams in American history, green energy," Trump told the convention. "With the help of our great energy workers here in Texas, our country is producing more oil and gas today than ever before." Democrats counter that energy costs have soared since Trump began the war with Iran in February, with diesel prices above $6 a gallon. "The cost of diesel just hit a record high, the price of regular gas is up nearly 50 percent since the war began," Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said on the Senate floor. "If Trump continues his current course in Iran, I can promise you this as well: the costs will just keep piling up." Republicans argue the war's effects are temporary, while Democrats' policies would restrict domestic energy production for years. The Trump administration recently ended a Biden-era requirement for fossil fuel power plants to curb carbon emissions by 2039 or shut down. The White House says the move will generate $310 billion in energy cost savings across the economy. "American energy was under attack," House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., told the convention. But now, "we've unleashed American energy." Industry advocates urged Republicans to make that contrast central to their campaigns. "Republicans have an opportunity this November to make the contrast clear: unleash American energy, cut costly regulations, and dismantle the Green New Deal policies that raise the cost of electricity, transportation, food, and nearly everything Americans buy," said Jason Isaac of the American Energy Institute. Republicans also see an opening in state races. Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen, who chairs the Republican Attorneys General Association, highlighted a court ruling blocking New York's Climate Superfund Act, which would require fossil fuel companies to help pay for climate adaptation projects. "Today, your Republican attorneys general are making sure that California and New York don't get to set policy for the rest of the country," Knudsen said. But some activists at the convention told InsideSources that Republicans have not effectively communicated their efforts to lower costs. Stephanie Olson, a GOP activist from Bristol, said Trump's economic record should appeal to voters, but "there are still questions that remain in people's heads when they go buy daily life expenses." Jennifer LePlay of Sandwich urged Republicans to emphasize their work in GOP-controlled legislatures, including New Hampshire's. "The federal government is too big, and a lot of those policies don't necessarily interject in our daily life as much as the state level policies," LePlay told NHJournal. New Hampshire GOP activist Al Letizio Jr. said Republican U.S. Senate candidate John Sununu and DiLorenzo have got the energy issue right. "I've heard John Sununu and Anthony DiLorenzo talk about bringing down energy costs," Letizio said. "There's a concern about supply and demand, and when you start bringing in pipelines, natural gas, or electricity, you'll get some groups opposing that and, as a result, a lower supply." Democrats, on the other hand, "want to lower energy prices but don't want pipelines or power lines." Leonard Robinson writes about politics and finance for InsideSources. More by Leonard Robinson

Noble Carbon will show how it's making EV charger installs painless at TechCrunch Disrupt.

Noble Carbon will show how it's making EV charger installs painless at TechCrunch Disrupt. Noble Carbon has developed a smart circuit breaker that allows households to electrify without the pain of a main panel upgrade. Plenty of people want to buy electric vehicles, but not everyone is prepared to shell out for an upgrade to their home's electrical service just to add an EV charger. The worry is reasonable. One study found that upgrading things like electrical panels (that box in the garage or basement that delivers power throughout a home) can more than double charger installation costs. Rather than rip out the old panel, Noble Carbon has developed circuit breakers that can take the headache out of installing an EV charger, or a heat pump or an induction stove for that matter. The Pittsfield, Massachusetts, startup is one of 200 startups in this year's TechCrunch Startup Battlefield, a pitch competition at TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco in October in which 20 finalists will present on the main stage. Noble Carbon's breakers can adjust how much electricity they deliver to an EV charger in real time, allowing the chargers to squeeze into otherwise at-capacity panels. Electrical panels in people's homes are typically designed to handle absolute peak usage, something that might happen only "a handful of hours per year," Spencer Fields, Noble Carbon's head of marketing, told TechCrunch. For example, if someone is hosting family for a holiday, they might find themselves simultaneously using the water heater, air conditioning, oven, and several TVs, all while every light is on in the house. The rest of the time, the electrical panel has room to spare. In that scenario, Noble Carbon's smart breakers would turn down the power flowing to the devices they control, essentially guaranteeing that the entire house doesn't draw more power than the panel can provide. "In order to avoid a main panel upgrade, you really only need control on your three to six largest loads [the biggest power-drawing appliances]," Fields said. Co-founder and CEO Jared Lebos was inspired to create the product after experiencing rolling blackouts in his home country of South Africa. He worked with Andrew Crane, the company's co-founder and CTO, to turn it into reality. The result is a breaker that fits into existing slots in a home's electrical panel and, according to the company, takes less than five minutes to install. Some of the startup's employees have been testing the breakers in their homes for more than a year, and the product is now undergoing evaluation for UL certification, a widely recognized electrical safety standard. Noble Carbon currently is partnering with the utility Eversource to install its breakers in up to 200 multifamily units in Massachusetts.

Eversource employees to join 30th annual Source to Sea Cleanup.

Eversource employees to join 30th annual Source to Sea Cleanup. Posted: Sep 17, 2026 / 10:03 PM EDT Updated: Sep 17, 2026 / 10:03 PM EDT SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Eversource employees across Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire will join the Connecticut River Conservancy on Friday for the 30th annual Source to Sea Cleanup. The annual event brings volunteers together to remove litter and debris from riverbanks, parks, streams and communities throughout the Connecticut River watershed. What began as a grassroots cleanup in 1996 has grown into one of the region's largest volunteer-driven environmental events. Since formal data collection began, volunteers have documented the removal of more than 2.6 million pounds of trash. This year also marks Eversource's 10th consecutive year supporting the cleanup. Approximately 75 Eversource employees are expected to participate at three cleanup sites across Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Hampshire, including the Pioneer Valley Riverfront Club in Springfield. "Protecting the environment and the communities we serve goes hand in hand with the work we do every day, and Source to Sea gives our employees an opportunity to make a direct and visible difference," said Eversource Energy Foundation President and Vice President of Community Partnership and Engagement Theresa Hopkins-Staten. "For 10 years, our employees have proudly worked alongside the Connecticut River Conservancy and volunteers across New England to help protect this important natural resource. Whether they're removing bottles, tires or much larger debris, every item collected is one less piece of trash that can harm wildlife or make its way into our waterways." The cleanup is intended to remove trash before it reaches storm drains and waterways and eventually makes its way toward the ocean. "We are grateful to have both the sponsorship and leadership of Eversource employees in tackling several of our difficult trash sites in MA, CT, and NH during CRC's annual Source to Sea Cleanup," said Stacey Lennard, Source to Sea Cleanup Coordinator. "Every piece of trash picked up is one less item headed into a storm drain, waterbody, or ultimately the ocean. Small actions add up, and together volunteers help protect the waterways and communities we all depend upon." Since Eversource began sponsoring the cleanup in 2017, company volunteers have cleaned 30 miles of riverbanks and surrounding areas across Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The company's employees have removed more than 550 bags of trash and more than 10,000 beverage containers over the years, along with items ranging from clothing and televisions to car parts and a canoe. The cleanup is part of Eversource's broader environmental stewardship and responsible land management efforts in the communities it serves. Removing waste from riverbanks and surrounding areas can help protect wildlife habitat, improve water quality and prevent debris from traveling farther downstream. More information about Eversource's community and sustainability efforts is available on Eversource's website.
